Most of us dream of climbing Everest, but it is not possible for everyone. Therefore, for a much more accessible reality to see the top of the world up close, we have developed the Mera Peak climbing with the Amphu Lapcha Pass trek.
We offer a combo package in our 21-day Mera Peak climbing with the Amphu Lapcha Pass trek. Do the desired trekking to Mera Peak Base Camp, climb the 6461 m high central peak of Mera, be very close to Everest with super privileged views of Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Cho-Oyu, and cross the prominent Amphu Lapcha Pass at 5650 m and Mera La at 5415 m.
Mera Peak is located in the Makalu-Barun National Park adjacent to the Sagarmatha National Park. It has three peaks: Central (6461 m), South (6065 m), and North (6476 m). We will climb the classic trekking route from the north side to the Central Peak through the Mera La pass (5415 m) following the footprints of Col J.O.M. Roberts and Sen Tenzing who became the first conqueror of the Peak on May 20, 1953.
After conquering the Summit, we will approach the south base camp of Amphu Lapcha and cross the mighty Amphu Lapcha pass at 5,845m that passes through the upper Hinku valley. Regarded as the challenging Himalayan pass covered with ice seracs, the breathtaking vistas it offers are in no way inferior. Everest, Island Peak, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Mera Peak, Chamlang, and Hongu Basin emerge miraculously in front of our eyes.
In addition, our trip will let you immerse in oriental culture, living with the mountain people, the Sherpas, and Tamangs, and sharing lodges and restaurants frequented by climbers who challenge the most beautiful mountains in Nepal on a tour that makes us rethink the meaning of life.
All in all, our Mera Peak climbing with Amphu Lapcha Pass trek offers everything desired by any trekkers and daring climbers. To make it accessible to novice trekkers as well, our expert team has structured the most accessible route that doesn’t require any serious technical skills. In addition, our trekking days are designed with gradual ascent, so acclimatization will occur quite smoothly.
With an exciting flight to Lukla from Kathmandu, our real adventure of Mera Peak climbing with the Amphu Lapcha Pass trek begins. The days ahead will take us through some unique Buddhist settlements of Pangkongma, Kothe, and Khare. From here, we climb to the two Camps: The base camp and the High camp of Mera Peak.
After climbing the Mera Peak, we proceed towards Amphu Lapcha Base Camp south. The next day, we will overcome the mighty Pass and then descend through Chhukung to join the classic trail of Everest Base Camp. We will pass by the Kongma Pass at 5540 m to reach Dingboche from where we will descend to Pangboche. The trail will then lead us to Lukla from where we will return to Kathmandu by flight.
Greetings from the capital of Nepal! After receiving your graciously at TIA, our representative will take you to your hotel in the city center of Kathmandu. Please rest in your room after you check in at the hotel.
You can briefly walk around the hotel and apprehend the Nepali atmosphere. Our program guide will meet you in the evening and organize the introduction program for all group members. He will also brief you about the Mera Peak climbing with the Amphu Lapcha Pass trek program.
Please ask any questions to our guide regarding the itinerary. Dine and go to bed early; we have an early flight to Lukla tomorrow.
Early in the morning, we will drive to TIA for a short 35-minute flight to Lukla, the starting point of our trek to Mera Peak. We will fly over the massive Himal of Everest and Kanchenjunga during the brief flight. As we land at the iconic Tenzing Hilary Airport, the beautiful Kongde Ri at 6187 m rises above to greet us.
In Lukla, we will be greeted by our local crew of guides and porters. After sharing our luggage, we will have breakfast and begin our walk to Chhutak or Paiya.
The initial stage of our trek will be steep downhill for about two hours till we reach Surke Village. Now, we will ascend again for about two hours to Pake Village. The village is said to have a deep lake once.
We will now continue walking through the deep rhododendron and pine forest to reach Chhutak at the base of Kalo Himal Ridge. We can stay here for the night. However, we can also stay at Paiya, which will reduce the length of our walk for the next day.
If Paiya is our overnight destination, then we will have to climb gently to Chhutak La Pass, elevated at 2945 m. We will climb down from the Pass for a while and reach Paiya village.
Note:
Some flights to Lukla will be relocated to Ramechhap Airport in order to relieve pressure on the airport in Kathmandu. This requires a 4 to 5-hour drive to Ramechhap. In this case, we would leave for Ramechhap early in the morning/night.
Leaving Paiya after breakfast, we will climb down to cross the Paiya Khola over a bridge. Then, we will ascend the Khari La Pass at 3081 m and climb down to hike through the Khari Khola valley along the terraced cultivated fields of the locals.
From here, the route to the Pangkongma is pretty much up and down. The village is a small Sherpa settlement blessed by the attractive Mani Walls, colorful monasteries, and the roaring Dudh Koshi River. If we are lucky enough, we may have pleasant weather that offers a view of the Everest expedition route from Jiri.
Leaving Pangkongma after breakfast, we will walk along the Dudh Koshi River again and ascend the Pangkongma La Pass (3175 m). After climbing down from the Pass, we will leave the Dudh Koshi River and set foot in the Hinku Khola River Valley. We will move on to ascend the Surke La.
The terraced fields, deep rhododendrons, and fir forest make our way till we arrive at Ramailo Danda. The lesser known yet, the breathtaking Peaks of Sanu Himal and Mojang Himal, along with Mera Peak, greet us in the village.
Not an easy day today as we have to overcome a challenging and long hike today. However, the fantastic views of Mera and Mojang Peak will keep us from getting tired.
Leaving Ramailo Danda, our path will constitute sporadic uphill and downhill hikes for about three hours till we reach Tama Khola. We will then cross the river and hike for about 30 minutes till we reach 4G Danda- the newly constructed tea house. Here, we will take a break and have our lunch.
Resuming our walk down under the cool shadow of the rhododendron and bamboo forests, we will undertake an uphill hike for about ten minutes to reach Chhatra Khola, marking our entry into Makalu Barun National Park. Keep an eye out for a cute red panda in the trees. There are small motels surrounded by jungles situated on the corner side of the Chhatra Khola. Here we will check in to spend a restful night after healthy dinner.
After breakfast, we will hike along the steep uphill trail for about 1 hour 45 minutes in the bamboo jungles . Then, the path will be on an easy slope walk until we reach Taktor Village. Generally, we will reach the village within 3 to 4 hours of easy walking but it may take long depending on our strength. At the village, we may stop for tea and lunch.
After lunch, we will continue our hike along the Hinku Khola to reach the secluded village of Tashong Dingma. Moving forward, we will cross the suspension bridge over Sanu Khola and walk for about two hours thirty minutes to reach Kothe.
It is a large and comfortable settlement of Sherpa ethnic tribe. There are several shops and many guesthouses. You can order hot water and have a full wash. There is a control post in the village where permission to enter Makalu Barun National Park is issued.
Today, we have a smooth climb along the trail that winds along the river between high green slopes. The short, pleasant climb will give us plenty of time to slowly acclimate to more than 4000 m altitude.
Hinku Khola will once again be our beautiful company as we hike towards the summer settlement of Yak herders located on the western bank of Hinku Drangka. We will then move ahead and have our lunch at Gondishung.
We will come across the 200-year-old monastery of Lungsumgba, which also offers the remarkable spectacle of Mera Peak, Charpate Himal, Thamserku, and Kusum Kanguru. We will walk for one more hour from here and reach Thaknak for our overnight stay.
We have a relatively short trek from Thaknak to Khare that will take us 3 to 4 hours. After leaving Thaknak, we will walk for about half an hour to visit Sabai Tsho glacial lake at 4463 m.
After exploring the lake, we will resume our hike along the Kharka Glacier’s lateral moraine, enjoying the Charpate Himal’s beautiful view. Then, we will climb steeply and reach the Hinku Nup glacier, from where we can see the breathtaking panorama of Kangtenga Peak.
Next, we will walk steeply by the Lhotse Shar glacier and reach Khare. In the evening, in good weather, a stunning panorama of Mera Peak itself, illuminated by the setting sun, opens up.
We have our much-deserved rest day at Khare. Our morning starts with the beautiful panorama of Mera Peak. Then, after breakfast, we will trek along the ridge to an altitude of 5,300m. A panorama of an amazing mountain lake, Mera Peak, and Mera La Pass opens up.
We will then climb down to our lodge in Khare and rest. We will enjoy our evening by resting with a hot meal under the starry sky.
We have a short walk today knowingly planned for better acclimatization before assaulting the Peak. Ascending along the glacial terrain, we will reach the Mera La Pass at 5415 m. The great Himalayan giants such as Makalu, Lhotse, and Everest will stand in the background.
We will climb down from the Pass for about 100 m and arrive at Mera la pass. Here, our crew will erect the temporary camps for our stay. After some rest and a tasty meal, our climbing guide will check our equipment. Then he will train us on using these equipment including ice axe, jumar, harness, crampons and carabiner. We will also learn to climb up and down along the fixed rope.
We are now closing in to the summit of Mera Peak as we will reach High Camp today. We will climb up the rocky glacial terrain towards the High Camp. Please pay extra attention here, as the path can be slippery. The hike forward will lead us to the top of the rock band, where there is a mound of large stones.
After reaching the High Camp, our crew members will again put up the camp for our overnight stay. In the meantime, we will enjoy the majestic views of Mount Everest, Makalu, Cho Oyu, the south side of Lhotse, Nuptse, Chamlang, and Baruntse.
Later, we will again practice using our gear for the final assault of the summit.
The big day has arrived; we will start early for our summit day. If you are well acclimatized after our previous stages, the chances of a successful ascent are good. Depending on the conditions, the climb takes 5 – 7 hours. The first stage is along a steep slope, and then the trail forward is moderately difficult along the icy terrain as the approach to the summit nears.
We may have to use the pre-installed railings, which our guide will check for safety. He will also guide us on using our gear when needed along the steep sections.
Meet the dawn with Mt. Everest (8,848m), Cho-Oyu (8,201m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,463m), Kanchenjunga (8,586m), Nuptse (7,855m), Lobuche (6,145m), Chamlang (7,319m) at the top.
After clicking some photos and storing these beauties in our minds forever, we will descend to High Camp. Here, we will congratulate each other, then feast on a hot meal prepared by our staff. Now is the time to climb down and cross the Mera La Pass, where we will set up our camp for our overnight stay.
After breakfast, we will climb down to Khare via Mera Base Camp early in the morning. Then, we will head to the east and follow the trail that will take us to Kongma Dingma. The icy sections on the trail need your careful attention. After about 5 to 6 hours of tackling the icy slope, we will reach the dry area of the Kongma Dingma, where, once again, we have to set up camp for an overnight stay.
The icy settlement offers a panoramic view of Chamlang, Baruntse, and Hunku, along with a beautiful glacial lake.
After breakfast, we will wind down our tents and slowly move to Seto Pokhari. Leaving Kongma Dingma, we will climb downhill towards the Honku valley. On the way, we will pass through a yak pasture from where you can delight your eyes with the breathtaking view of Baruntse.
With the accompaniment of the Honku glacial river, we will continuously gain altitude. The landscape slowly opens up the face of Everest and Lhotse in the distance. We will stay overnight in Seto Pokhari.
After breakfast, we will set out for Amphu Lapcha Base Camp. Leaving Seto Pokhari (White Lake), we will overcome a steep trail in the upper basin of Honku Valley. The path will then lead us right next to a beautiful glacial lake.
The strenuous walk will be rewarded with the magnificent views of Chamlang Peak at 7321 m. and Everest. After about 6 hours of arduous walking, we will finally arrive at the south base camp of Amphu Lapcha Pass. The site is located on the steep slope of Lake Panch Pokhari.
We have a hard yet very rewarding day today. We will leave early in the morning to conquer the prominent Amphu Lapha Pass. From the camp to the glacier, it takes at least two hours to walk along a steep path through the seracs. We will need high-altitude equipment on the glacier.
We have to overcome two railing sections using a jumar. After that, an hour of walking along the gently sloping body of the glacier remains until the Pass.
As we reach the top of the Pass, the panorama that opens cannot be expressed in words. Everest, Island Peak, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Mera Peak, Chamlang, and Hongu Basin stand tall in front of your eyes, illuminating in the golden hue of the early sun rays.
Unfortunately, it’s time to descend from the Pass, overcoming two rappel sections of twenty and thirty meters each. The subsequent hike to Chhukung will take at least 3-4 hours. We will have dinner and accommodation in double rooms in a guesthouse in Chhukung in the evening.
After breakfast, we will leave Chhukung and proceed to make our return journey to Kathmandu. We will take a different route when returning to feel a new adventure and a new sighting of the marvelous mountains of the Khumbu region. From now on, our upcoming trek will be a mostly comfortable downhill hike.
We will climb down to Dingboche past Orsho and Shomare, following the Imja Khola, enjoying the spectacular view of Ama Dablam. From Dingboche, Dudh Koshi River will be our companion as we make our way towards Pangboche. Here, we can visit the oldest monastery in the Khumbu region, where the Yeti skull and its bones are said to be preserved.
We will retire to our lodge in the evening for a hot dinner and a much-needed good night’s rest.
We will leave Pangboche and walk downhill through the familiar rhododendron and pine forest along the Dudh Koshi River. Traversing Debuche, we will arrive at Tengboche, which is known for its beautiful monastery of the same name. We will take some time to explore this ancient Gumpa and observe the daily rituals of the monks.
Then, we will steeply climb down to reach Phungithanga. We will now climb steeply towards the Sanasa Village. The path will be relatively comforting from here until we reach Kyangjina village. Here, we will have our lunch and undertake an easy walk towards Namche, where we will spend a comfortable night.
Waking up with the breathtaking mountain surroundings of Everest, Thamserku, and Ama Dablam is truly out of this world. After enjoying our breakfast, we will now continue our descent through the cool shadow of pine, fir, and rhododendron forests to reach Top Danda. From here, we will move on to cross the legendary Hilary Suspension Bridge.
Then, we will walk past the beautiful Sherpa settlements of Jorsalle, Monjo, Benkar, Phakding, Ghat, Thadokoshi, Chheplung, and Chaurikharka to reach Lukla for our overnight stay.
We will go to Lukla Airport early in the morning to catch a flight to Kathmandu. Enjoy the scenic flight till we reach TIA, from where we will drive you to your accommodation in Kathmandu. Rest, relax, and recollect the memory of your astounding journey.
In the evening, we will celebrate with a farewell dinner with our team with delicious Nepali meals and live cultural program.
Unfortunately, it’s time to part our ways! After breakfast, we will drive you to TIA for your flight home. We hope we have delivered the top-class service you literally deserve. Please remember us for your next adventure in Nepal.
We also operated private trips.
The Autumn months of September, October, and November and the spring months of March, April, and May are the best times for Mera Peak climbing with the Amphu Lapcha Pass trek.
It is during these seasons that the weather in the Khumbu region is stable and mostly sunny. You will find temperatures around 20 degrees in the day and -0 to 5 degrees at night. Daytime temperatures at the summit fluctuate around -15°C.
The winter months of December, January, and February can bring the thick snow blocking the path to the summit and the pass. The summer months of June, July, and August feature heavy precipitation, making this trek more challenging.
The Mera Peak, with an altitude of 6461 m, lies 75 km away from Nepal’s capital. The starting destination of our trek is Lukla, which is situated at a road distance of 367 km and an aerial distance of 135 km from Kathmandu.
The highest point of our Mera Peak climbing with Amphu Lapcha Pass trek beside the Peak is Amphu Lapcha Pass at 5845 m. The highest elevation for our overnight stay is at Amphu Lapcha Base Camp at 5650 m.
The 21-day program of our trip constitutes a total of 18 days of genuine hiking adventure when we will walk approximately 10 to 15 km each day on foot. Most of the days we will walk for 5 to 7 hours daily. Our specifically designed program has emphasized the proper acclimatization of each participant.
Therefore, we have included minimal walking hours between the treks, with the easiest trek being on day 8. On this day, we will walk for only 2 to 3 hours from Thaknak to Khare.
The longest walking days will be on summit day, when we hike for 8 to 9 hours as we climb the summit and descend to Mera La Pass. An equally tough day will be while crossing the Amphu Lapcha Pass on day 16, when we will walk for 9 to 10 hours.
Our Mera Peak Climbing with Amphu Lapcha Pass trek is a moderately challenging trek. The climbing to the Mera Peak is categorized as 1B alpine grade, making it a moderately challenging trekking peak in the Khumbu region of Nepal. On the other hand, the Amphu Lapcha Pass is considered one of the most strenuous Himalayan Passes that require you to overcome numerous seracs and crevasses with a steep slope of 40°.
Therefore, this climb requires each participant to be in good physical condition, train endurance, and have experience of previous climbs to peaks above 5000 m.
The major risk this adventure poses is altitude sickness, for which we have designed minimal walking hours with gradual ascent and rest days between the trek.
We don’t recommend newbies to attempt our Mera Peak Climbing with Amphu Lapcha Pass trek as their first orientation to the Nepali Himalayas. This expedition requires certain technical skills, such as walking on thick snow and ice and overcoming the inclined slopes and seracs. Although Mera Peak is known as the trekking peak, it is still a high-risk zone where weather conditions and a person’s physical condition can change in a matter of minutes.
Additionally, we will have to cross the high Amphu Lapcha Pass above 5500 m and Mera La Pass around 5500 m to complete this journey.
So, if you are new to high-altitude climbing, please try Mera peak climbing only. You can participate in our adventure after gaining the needed experience and skills.
Proper preparation is only a small component of a successful ascent, which we can influence in advance. Build up your body muscle strength, increase your endurance, and hone your hiking skills by running, cycling, swimming, and jogging. Do some push-ups and sit-ups with squats to strengthen your leg muscles.
You can approach the Amphu Lapcha Pass as an alternate option and then continue with your trek to conquer Mera Peak. For this option, your adventure begins in the town of Lukla. You will then walk on the classic EBC trail till Dingboche. From here, you will hike to Amphu Lapcha Base Camp via Chhukung.
After crossing the Amphu Lapcha pass, you will hike to Seto Pokhari, Kongme Dingma, and reach the High Camp of Mera Peak. The next day, you will climb the summit, descend to Khare, Kothe, and arrive at Lukla via Zatrawa La pass.
Even with well-prepared acclimatization days and proper training, altitude sickness is something that cannot be prevented when breathing in the thin air of high-altitude mountains. Be familiar with the mild symptoms of this sickness, which can be headache, appetite loss, sleep loss, and dizziness.
Taking Diamox or Ibuprofen can help to alleviate these symptoms, but to prevent their occurrence, please drink lots of water and take your ascent gradually.
As part of our comprehensive service, we offer you airport pick up and drop/transfer to the hotel and all ground transportation during the Kathmandu tour and the Kathmandu-Lukla-Kathmandu flight.
In Kathmandu, we offer complimentary breakfast, and during the hiking journey, breakfast, lunch, and dinner with tea and fresh seasonal fruits will be provided in the accommodating lodge. Unlimited food, tea/ coffee, and hot water will be given during camping.
Instead of NTC networks, opt for NCELL mobile networks for communication and internet data packages. The NCELL network works more properly in the Khumbu region than the NTC.
The lodges provide WIFI service at extra cost, or you can also purchase a pre-paid Everest Link card for the internet service.
Gadget charging is also available in the same lodges again at an additional fee.
Please carry power banks or solar chargers to charge your gadgets in the camps.
Along with the climbing permit for Mera Peak, we also need the Makalu Barun National Park permit, Sagarmatha National Park permit, and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu rural fee for our trip.
(Note: first aid kits & medicine will carrying with our company’s guide during the trekking However, we recommend you to bring your personal first-aid kit)
Both present the same level of difficulty in terms of altitude, technicality, and skill. Relatively, both the passes are of the same altitude, requiring the need to overcome steep slopes and sharp inclination.
In case of a completely unsuccessful attempt to climb, a second attempt at the summit on a reserve day is not provided but is possible for an additional fee after discussion with the organizer and guide.
Mera Peak is considered an easy trekking peak than Island Peak.
No, we will provide all necessary tents, trekking poles, warm down jackets and sleeping bags, water bottles, water purification tablets, all necessary trekking route maps and unlimited foods, tea/ coffee, and hot water during camping.
