Our Mera Peak Climbing with Heli Return tour is an unbeatable combination of the tranquility and meditation of hiking and climbing adventure in the Khumbu region of Nepal. The additional adventure is the opportunity to soar in the sky in a helicopter directly from Khare to Kathmandu, marveling at the stunning views of the monstrous Nepali Himalayas.
Mera Peak Climbing with Heli Return is Situated in the pristine Makalu Barun National Park near Sagarmatha National Park, Mera Peak is the highest trekking peak in Nepal. It has three mountain peaks of different altitudes and complexity. The southern Mera peak (6065 m) and the northern Mera peak (6476 m) due to technical complexity is beyond the reach of any climbers. We will therefore approach the central peak of Mera at 6461 m elevation.
The entire 15 day Mera Peak Climbing with Heli Return tour will thus take us through the route taken by the legendary explorers Col J.O.M. Roberts and Sen Tenzing on May 20, 1953. Along the route, we will also navigate through the exhilarating Mera La Pass at 5415 m.
Mera Peak Climbing with Heli Return extraordinary journey also offers us the world’s most beautiful panorama from the summit including the grandest spectacle of five eight thousand meter high mountains simultaneously- Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Cho-Oyu.
The entire Mera Peak Climbing with Heli Return tour lasts 15 days with 11 days allocated for trekking and climbing adventure so that we have enough time for the proper acclimatization. The tour starts and ends in Kathmandu.
Our Mera Peak Climbing with Heli Return, Expedition and trekking begins in the village of Lukla, which we will reach by plane on a wonderful panoramic flight. Then we will trek through the authentic villages that offer the landscape of superlatives and we will get insight into the life and culture of the great Sherpa population.
This Mera Peak Climbing with Heli Return is a tea house or lodge trekking with comfortable accommodation in a five-star hotel in Kathmandu along with the mountain lodge shelter during the trek. Camping days will be spent at base camp and high camp only. Additionally, Mera Peak is not technically difficult to climb and requires no prior climbing experience.
So, let’s go on an incredible journey together! We are eagerly anticipating your arrival.
Our Mera peak climbing with return by helicopter begins immediately after you arrive in Kathmandu. A panoramic flight the next day will take you to Lukla from where your trekking days to Mera Peak begin. After you recover from the journey, you can undertake the first explorations of the historic city center and dine in a cozy restaurant.
After your breakfast, our team leader will meet you and organize a brief program where you and all other participants will come together. He will brief you about our Mera peak climbing with a return-by-helicopter program.
Then he will check all your equipment and guide you on buying or renting in case you miss anything. Our team will prepare the trekking permit and other necessary documents.
Meanwhile, we will go on a short sightseeing tour of the city, including a visit to Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, and Swayambhunath.
In the evening, we will pack our bags for the Lukla flight tomorrow morning.
After breakfast, the panoramic flight to Lukla will take place. On this 30-minute flight we can enjoy breathtaking views of the highest mountains in the world, the Himalayas.
At the Tenzing Hilary Airport, our local guide and porter will receive us along with Mount Kongde Ri (6187 m). After a short break, we will climb down steeply for about two hours to Surke village. From here, we will walk uphill for about two hours and reach the settlement of Pake.
The final stage is beautiful, leading us through the deep rhododendron and pine forest to Chhutak, situated at the foot of Kalo Himal Ridge.
Note:
The unfavorable weather and high air traffic load can cause a diversion of the Lukla flight from Kathmandu to Ramechhap/Manthali Airport. We will drive by private transport for 4 hours to Ramechhap to fly to Lukla within 20 minutes.
Leaving Chhutak, we will head up steadily to the Chhutok La Pass at 2945 m. We will then head downhill until we arrive at Paiya. From here, we will go steeply downhill until we reach Paiya Khola with a small bridge.
After crossing the bridge, we will climb the Khari La Pass (3081 m). We will again hike down through Khari Khola valley. On the way we pass bamboo and rhododendron forests.
We will now enter the Dudh Koshi Valley and continue walking up and down till we finally reach Panggom, a hamlet with terraced fields.
After breakfast, we will leave the agricultural fields of Panggom. The path soon leads us to another pass, the Panggom La Pass at (3175 m). From the top of the pass, we can witness the beautiful Mera and Numbur Peak.
The trail now leaves Dudh Koshi Valley and enters Hingku Valley. It descends to the beautiful Sherpa village of Sibuie and, from there, descends through the forest to Ningsow, from where it ascends steeply through the forest to Ramailo Danda. Enjoy the delightful atmosphere surrounded by the Mera Peak, Sanu Himal, and Mojang Himal.
Today, the path will be, to put it mildly, a roller coaster way up in the valley. Most of the day today we will walk along small, narrow paths through dense forest. There will be many ascents and descents, and stretches along rivers.
After three hours of such ascent and descent, we will reach Tama Khola. After crossing the river, we will walk for about half an hour and arrive at 4G Danda, which is the newly built tea house. After eating our lunch here, we will walk downhillthrough the rhododendron and bamboo forests for about one hour and twenty minutes and reach Chhatra Khola- an entry point to Makalu Barun National Park.
After leaving Chhatra Khola, the trail ascends for about an hour and 45 minutes through dense bamboo forest. The path gradually turn into an easy trail along a gentle slope as we approach Taktor village where we will eat our lunch.
Then, our path joins a path that follows the Hinku Khola. Soon we reach Tashong Dingma. We will then cross Sanu Khola and hike for about 2.5 hours to reach Kothe from where we can see the Mera Peak.
We will wake up with the beautiful view of Mera peak. Then, we will begin our hike along a mountain ridge and arrive at Hinku Drangka- Yak herders’ summer settlement. The trail further will lead us to Gondishung, a temporary shepherd’s village where we will eat our lunch.
Continuing along the path, we will pass the Lungsumgba Gompa- a 200 year old monastery which bestows the incredible views of Mera Peak, Charpate Himal, Thamserku, and Kusum Kanguru. An hour walk further and we will be at Thaknak, our destination for today.
After a pleasant morning breakfast in Thaknak, we will now hike for about 30 minutes to explore Sabai Tsho glacial lake at 4463 m. Then, we will walk along the Kharka Glacier lateral moraine with the amazing company of Charpate Himal.
Later, the path climbs steeply till Hinku Nup glacier , which offers the gorgeous view of Kangtenga Peak. Another vertical climb along the Lhotse Shar glacier will finally take us to Khare.
Today we have an acclimatization day to get used to the altitude of the region. We will climb the ridge, from the top at an altitude of 5,300 meters we can get fantastic views of Mera’s fearsome North Face along with Mera La Pass.
After descending to our lodge, we will then prepare with the training session with our guide. He will train us in the use of rope, ice axes, boots, crampons and other climbing equipment.
We will reach the Mera Base Camp today; pretty exciting as our approach to the summit is coming closer. First, we will follow the path that leads under a rocky rib to the nearby Mera Glacier. Soon we will be standing on the gently rising glacier and moving over towards Mera La Pass, 5415 m high.
The Pass offers the outstanding views of Mera Peak, Makalu, Lhotse, and Everest. Climbing down about 100 meters from the Pass, we will be at the base camp of Mera Peak.
We will have another training session here, where we will learn to use the ice axe, jumar, harness, crampons, and carabiner. We will also learn to walk up and down along the fixed ropes.
Today, we must put on the trekking boots an crampons as the climb is going to be quite hard. We will climb along the rough and snowy path. We have to be careful here as there are some crevasses.
We will overcome all sections and reach the high camp safely. Our team will set up a camp for us and we will end the day on the mountain with the majestic spectacle of Everest, Makalu, Cho oyu and Lhotse.
This day, the goal is the summit of Nepal’s highest trekking peak, Mera Peak, at 6,461 meters. The ascent from High Camp to Mera Peak will start at early in the morning. We will wake up at 1 am and eat our breakfast.
We will get ready for our climb, equip ourselves with our climbing gear and recheck with our team and leave High Camp at around 2 am.
Initially, the slope will be quite steep, and then the path slowly eases up along the icy terrain.
The last 30 steeper meters to the highest point will be hardest that can be tackled with glacial traversing till we reach the summit. Since Mera Peak is technically easy six thousand meter peak, there will be no need of using fixed ropes. If everything goes well, we will make to the summit after about five to six hours of climbing.
The view from the top will be enormous, with five eight thousand meters standing in line: Mt. Everest (8,848m), Cho-Oyu (8,201m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,463m), Kanchenjunga (8,586m). Additionally, the Nuptse (7,855m), Lobuche (6,145m), and Chamlang (7,319m) will also keep teasing us from behind.
After the views, its time to climb down from the summit and head back to High Camp where we will be pampered by our kitchen team. Then we will descend to Khare via the ascent route passing Mera Base camp en route.
We will have a wonderful breakfast in the small town of Khare. Then, we will pack our bags and get ready to enjoy the luxurious helicopter ride that will take us back to Kathmandu via Lukla.
Along an hour-long thrilling flight, literally fly above the behemoth mountains of Nepal. The helicopter may stop at Lukla airport for about 10 to 15 minutes to refuel.
After we reach Kathmandu, we will recover from the exciting journey and in the evening, we will enjoy a farewell Dinner with Nepalese cultural meals and live show.
Use the last day in Kathmandu by walking through the old town and purchase the last souvenirs. Depending on the planned flight, the transfer will take place to the airport.
We also operated private trips.
Our Mera peak Climbing with return by helicopter journey is best suited in March, April, and May during spring and from September to November during the autumn season.
In the spring, it is pleasantly warm during the day and cools down to around zero degrees at night. This period is especially for those of you who also enjoy seeing flourishing valleys with huge rhododendron forests and other wildflowers.
In autumn, it is quite mild during the day, even pleasantly warm when the weather is sunny, and there is no wind, but it gets cold at night, with temperatures down to minus 10 degrees possible. This period offers fresh air with crystal clear views. The forests are in beautiful greenery, and there are many nice and exciting festivals during the autumn.
In the winter months (December to February) temperatures of around minus 20 degrees are possible- a little too cold to be enjoyable in the Himalayas.
The summer/monsoon months (June to August) bring heavy rainfall with the risk of avalanches in the higher regions and landslides in the lowlands.
The magnificent peak of Mera stands at an impressive elevation of 6461 m above sea level. The approximate distance of 75 km separated the peak from vibrating Kathmandu. The starting point of our trek is Lukla town, situated at 2800 m elevation and at an aerial distance of 135 km from the capital. The distance is quickly covered within half an hour’s flight.
During the trek and climb period, our highest overnight destination will be at High Camp at 5,780 m above sea level. On our 11 day trekking and climbing period, we will cover 7 to 8 km every day.
During the 11 day of hiking and climbing days of the Mera Peak climbing expedition, we have thoughtfully designed our hiking schedule with the average walk of 5 to 7 hours a day. However, the walking duration each day varies significantly based on the overnight village and terrain.
For example, during the ninth day, we will walk only for 2 to 3 hours to reach Khare from Thaknak. It will be our easiest journey during the entire journey. The toughest challenge will be on the 13th day when we push to the summit of Mera Peak from High Camp and descend back to Khare. The day will certainly test our endurance and strength as we will walk for 8 to 9 hours covering 17 km approximately.
Our Mera peak climbing with return by helicopter is graded 2C on difficulty level which means the peak is only very slightly technical. Therefore, the peak is classified as one of the best trekking peak in Nepal for which only basic mountaineering skills suffice. However, good physical condition is necessary, as you arrive at a relatively high altitude and must possess good physical and mental endurance. You must be able to cope with a peak day of 9-12 hours with a heavier backpack (6-8 kg).
For your accustomed to the higher- altitude, we have carefully strategized minimal walking duration with rest days at Kathmandu and Khare.
Mera Peak is well-suited as a first choice for those who want to try high-altitude climbing. Mera Peak is one of the mountains we offer climbs to that is considered the easiest to climb. It is a low angle all the way up to the top, but with that said, it must also be said that the way up the glacier is quite long, and as the normal trail runs on the north side of the mountain, it is often cold.
You do not need to have previous alpine climbing experience but we consider it a plus. Your physical health must be good, and you should be prepared for hiking days that last 4-6 hours and sometimes longer.
The Mera peak trek and the ascent go up to quite high altitudes. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you train before our Mera peak Climbing with return by helicopter tour. We recommend physical activities approximately three times a week – preferably several months before departure.
Begin with walking several kilometers a day. Pack a light backpack with lunch and water so you get used to walking with a light daypack. In addition, more fitness-demanding activity is the way to the top and a better experience along the way. This can be running, cycling, or sports such as football, badminton, swimming, going to the gym, etc.
3.5-10 km runs are incredibly effective – especially in combination with some long walks up to departure on Mera Peak, and for goodness sake don’t forget the stair training to get your legs ready to carry you up the mountain.
The plus point of Mera peak climbing is the approach via several yet beautiful routes. One route will take you to Lukla, from where you will walk through the various high-altitude settlements of the Khumbu region, including Namche, Tengboche, and Chutanga. The trail from here allows you to cross the massive Zatrwa La Pass at 4600 m altitude. From here, the trail joins Thaknak via Kothe.
Another rewarding approach to Mera Peak begins with a drive to Bhandar from Kathmandu. Then, hiking through the picturesque settlements of Sete, Junbesi, and Nunthala, the route joins Panggom.
During the Mera peak climbing expedition, you will gradually gain height as the trek days progress. Ultimately, you will reach an altitude of around 6400 m on the summit day. The high altitude trek and climbing therefore can put a considerable strain on your body.
We have our tour planned that will allow good altitude adaptation however, the risk of altitude sickness cannot be ruled out. We recommend you to walk slowly and steadily, especially on the first few days at altitude, so that your body can adapt to the changed environmental conditions (altitude, eating, and sleeping habits).
In the occurrence of headaches, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, and body aches, you can take Diamox or Ibuprofen after consultation with our climbing guide.
If the symptoms are retained, our guide may postpone your trip for a few days and take you to a lower altitude.
We propose to include accommodation, transportation, and meals in our comprehensive Mera peak Climbing with a return by helicopter tour. We offer private airport pick-up and drop-off services on your arrival and departure day in Kathmandu. Private transport with a tour guide and driver will be provided during a one-day Kathmandu excursion trip.
A domestic flight to Lukla from Kathmandu or a private drive from Kathmandu to Ramechhap airport and a flight to Lukla service is also included in our program. A rewarding conclusion to your trip with a return via helicopter from Khare to Kathmandu is one of the highlights of our service.
In Kathmandu, you will be accommodated in a luxurious five-star hotel in the twin room with breakfast included. During the trek, you will stay overnight in selected mountain lodges, mostly in twin rooms.
In the lodges, you will receive breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a cup of tea or coffee with your meals and fresh fruit every day after dinner. All other drinks (including warm/hot water for the drink bottle) have to be paid for directly on-site.
The tents will be provided for the base and high camp at Mera Peak, and the food is prepared by the accompanying team.
Ncell and NTC mobile networks work perfectly fine for communication with high-speed 4G service for internet connectivity. Please do not accept continuous service at higher altitudes and in base camps and high camps.
The lodges facilitate the charging of your gadgets, including power banks, mobile, camera batteries, ipads, etc. They also offer WIFI service at the setting. The services cost an extra price not included in our service.
Mera Peak climbing permit and Makalu Barun National Park Entry Permit are the requirements for our Mera Peak Climbing with a return by helicopter obtained by our guide on your behalf.
(Note: first aid kits & medicine will carrying with our company’s guide during the trekking However, we recommend you to bring your personal first-aid kit)
Mera Peak is a 6461 m high peak, while Island Peak stands at 6165 m, both peaks illuminating in the Khumbu region of Nepal. You may think Island Peak is easier, but it is more demanding than Mera Peak. The trail leading to the Island Peak is also tricky, consisting of steeper slopes and more inclination. Therefore, experience and mountaineering skills are required for Island Peak. We therefore recommend you first climb Mera Peak and try Island Peak later.
We provide trekking poles, warm down jacket, and sleeping bag for the trek. There will be ropes, climbing harnesses and ascenders for loan for use on the final stretch to the top of Mera Peak itself. If you want specific alpine boots for trekking on the glacier, you must bring them yourself.
Baggage transport is included on all route sections towards Mera Peak, where it is carried between the teahouses by our team of porters. However, the luggage that is transported must not weigh more than 10 kg, as this is the maximum weight of luggage carried on the flight from Lukla to Kathmandu after the trekking tour. On the trek to Mera Peak, you carry your own daypack of approximately 4-6 kg.
The total price for our Mera peak Climbing with return by helicopter is USD 4599.
