Trip Overview

The beauty of the Himalayas, natural reserve, gastronomy, culture, fun, and adventure are some of the countless attractions that the Tamang Heritage trek offers which can be enjoyed with friends or the whole family.

In fact, the Tamang Heritage trek represents the ideal proposal for all those travelers who wish to combine intact and curious cultural scenery with their great passion that is suggestive walks, among unparalleled natural landscapes.

Opened for tourism only since 2004, this trek is a 53 km short hiking journey that takes us amidst the stunning Ganesh Himal and Langtang Mountain ranges. Situated just 30 km away from the charming medieval city of Kathmandu, the Tamang Heritage trek will take us through the sacred Tibetan culture of Tamangs that permeates every single inch of this trek.

As the successor of the ancient Tibetan traders, they thrive in the high-altitude Himalayan air. Their traditional way of life, still untouched by modern technology, revolves around cattle breeding, agriculture, and trade with China. They have their own unique set of attire, language, cuisine, culture, festivals, and traditions.

We can observe their monasteries, lifestyle, and their extraordinary ethnicity as we make our way through their quaint villages of Gatlang, Nagthali Danda, Thuman, and Briddim. We will have the opportunity to interact with these residents and learn about their traditions, language, and crafts. The warmth and hospitality of the Tamang people, together with their cultural testimonies, make this trek an unrepeatable experience.

However, the Tamang Heritage Trek is not only for cultural explorers but also for nature enthusiasts. All along the route, the frozen peaks of Langtang mountain ranges, Ganesh Himal, Shishapangma, Kerung, and Sanjen will be our delightful company whereas the roaring Bhote Koshi River will also not leave our sight.

On the other hand, being nestled in the bosom of the Langtang National Park, this trek will also allow you to stumble upon its distinctive flora and fauna.

Each step of this trek will take you to a new discovery in one of the most remote regions of Nepal. The vibrant villages and serene mountain trails make the Tamang Heritage Trek an unforgettable blend of cultural immersion and nature exploration.

How does our journey begin?

We leave Kathmandu and head towards Syabrubesi by private jeep. We will then continue along the trail from the village on foot to traverse the distinct settlements of Gatlang and Tatopani. Then, we will take n the challenge of crossing the prominent ridge of Nagthali where we will get the opportunity to spend a night at its local Lama Monastery.

We will then proceed with our descending journey past Thuman and Briddim. The onward stretch will then take us back to Syabrubeshi from where we will drive back comfortably to Kathmandu.

Trip Information of Tamang Heritage Trek

Best Time

Undertaking the Tamang Heritage trek is ideal before or after the monsoon/summer period (June to August). In September, October, and November of autumn months (after monsoon), the sun shines practically every day, and the atmosphere is particularly clear.

In the spring period from March to May (before the monsoon), the weather is stable, the air is crisp and the temperatures are lower. The colder months of December, January, and February are also favorable times for the Tamang Heritage trek with almost clear skies, however, the temperature can be relatively colder in the morning and at night especially at Nagthali Danda which is often blanketed with snow.

The summer months, however, present the risk of higher temperatures between 20 to 30 degrees Celsius with the slippery road and leech infestation.

Elevation and Distance

The Tamang Heritage trek covers a total distance of 53 km and leads you to the northern region of Kathmandu city. The journey begins in Syabrubesi, a village situated 122 km from the capital. Following the scenic Pasang Lhamu Highway, the drive to Syabrubesi usually takes approximately 6 to 7 hours.

During our 10-day unforgettable journey, we will conquer the heights and reach the summit at Nagthali Danda, which towers at an impressive altitude of 3165 meters above sea level. This remarkable ridge will also serve as our highest overnight stop.

During our expedition, we will trek for six days, covering an average distance of 10 kilometers per day.

Maximum/Minimum walk per day

During our ten-day Tamang Heritage trek itinerary, we have allocated six days for an exciting hiking experience. Each day, we will be walking for around 5 to 6 hours. The walking duration however is based on the terrain, your pace, and the overnight stop we have scheduled in our itinerary.

The most enjoyable, easiest, and shortest walk will be on day 4 when we walk from Gatlang to Tatopani. The fifth day of our trek will be the toughest walk when we travel from Tatopani to climb up the Nagthali Danda where we will reach the peak after a 7-hour hike.

Difficulty and Acclimatization

The Tamang Heritage trek is a comfortable trekking journey in the Langtang region of Nepal which can be an excellent start to moderate altitude trekking trips. It can also be the acclimating trips before you take your first steps to high-altitude treks in Nepal such as Everest Base Camp or Annapurna treks.

The trekking journey constitutes the easy walking trails almost always below 3000 m except when we climb the Nagthali Danda at 3165 m.  therefore our Tamang Heritage trek could be the perfect choice for a short family getaway in Nepal. It is also a great option for beginners and also for seniors looking to add some adventure to their retirement years.

In addition, we have planned and provided for all the details, which is why your backpacks will be transported by our porters, and we will live in comfortable teahouses along the route. And at the start and finish of the trek, we will spend the night in a good hotel in the capital of Nepal so that you can rest.

Preparation and training

Although the Tamang Heritage trek is relatively short at low altitudes, you still have to deal a long day hikes for about six days along the mountainous terrain of the Langtang region. In addition, you will be ascending to Nagthali Danda which is one of the challenges of this trek. Therefore, you should prepare yourself in advance to develop strength, endurance, speed, and flexibility.

If you want to increase your muscle strength, walk up a gradual climb with a backpack (start light and increase the weight up to 20kg). You can also include climbing stairs and doing stretching exercises at home, focusing on the legs, waist, and neck. Don’t forget to accompany them with breathing exercises, and rotation of the trunk and shoulder joints. Add bike rides or use a stationary bike at the gym.

Train on different types of terrain, such as hills or slopes, to prepare for the challenges of hiking and strengthen the specific muscles required. Do specific exercises to improve your balance and stability, such as walking in a straight line or using a balance board. This will help you stay steady on uneven terrain.

Alternate Routes

Tamang Heritage trek is undeniably a fantastic short adventure in Nepal but it offers you only glimpses of very small Langtang. If you wish to see more of the authentic beauty of the entire Langtang region, you may want to extend your trip by 4 or 5 days during which you will get the opportunity to see the astounding snow-capped peaks of Dorje Lakpa, Langtang Lirung,  Gangchhempo, and many other lesser-known peaks other than Everest or Annapurna.

For this purpose, you will take the trail running from Briddim to Lama Hotel. Then the route will further take you to Langtang Village and Kyangjin Gompa.

In addition, you can also take your adventure to the next level by combining the Gosaikunda Lake trek with the Tamang Heritage trek. For this, you have to add only 6 days to your trip.

If you wish to experience the unspoiled charm of the sacred lake, then follow the path from Thuman to Thulo Syabrubesi,  Singomba to Gosainkunda.

For an additional thrill, you can also ascend the 5100 m high Surya Peak and then descend to cross the Lauribinayak Pass at 4610.

Altitude Sickness

Our Tamang Heritage trek itinerary will take us to an altitude of above 3000 m which is not usual for our bodies. We have paid maximum attention to acclimatization when planning this tour. Still, we may experience headaches, widespread weakness, insomnia, lack of appetite, and slight nausea due to a natural process of adaptation of the body to the decrease in oxygen that begins to occur around 3000 meters above sea level.

Once you reach altitude it is of fundamental importance to avoid, or limit as much as possible, smoking, alcohol, fatigue, or excessive walking. Instead, allow yourself moments of rest throughout the day, and avoid heavy and indigestible foods.

Normally the symptoms of altitude sickness disappear in a couple of days. If not, however, you can take Daimox for quick relief from the symptoms.

Transportation, Meals and Drink

We have tried to take care of all the details regarding our Tamang Heritage trek. We have organized the receipt of permits, your lodging, transportation, and meals during the trip.

We offer you an exclusive airport pick-up and drop-off service by private car transport to and from your hotel. We will also take care of your transportation when driving from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi to Kathmandu by offering you a private jeep and a skilled driver.

In Kathmandu, you can enjoy a comfortable stay at a 3-star hotel for 2 nights in a twin-sharing room. You will be treated to a complimentary breakfast every morning in the capital.

During the trek, you will be able to rest in a peaceful mountain lodge or tea houses along the route. In the lodges, you can order three meals a day including breakfast, lunch, and dinner with tea after every meal. Fresh fruits will also be provided daily after dinner.

In the lodge, you can enjoy the national Nepali dish of Dal Vat Tarkari and Momos. For the local delicacies, you can try Tsampa porridge, Thukpa, Tibetan bread with little raksi, or chhyang.

Communication, Gadgets charging, and Internet/wifi

You can stay in touch with your family and friends during the Tamang heritage trek using the national mobile networks of NTC or NCELL. You can get your SIM cards in Kathmandu by providing a copy of your passport and a photo. You can enjoy the high-speed 4G service with these local networks all over Nepal, although signal strength may decrease at Nagathali Danda.

The mountain shelters along the route also provide WIFI connections at minimal cost. Please do not expect the connection speed to be as fast as in your country. Likewise, for an additional fare, you can also charge your gadgets at these accommodations.

Permits

Our Tamang Heritage trek will take us through the protected zone of the Langtang National Park. Therefore, it is essential to obtain the Langtang National Park permit and the Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS) permit for this trek. Our guide will take care of securing these permits on your behalf.
