When in Sama Gaun, you will have one of the rare chances to step into the base camp of the Manaslu (4800 m) itself or walk towards the serenity of the high alpine lake of Birendra (3460 m).
Now, the landscape dramatically changes into one of the dry rocky realms as you walk towards Samdo and then to Dharmasala which is the base camp for the fearsome Larke Pass.
Once you make it to the top of the Pass, get ready to be dazzled by the enormous presence of the imposing Cheo Himal (6,820 m), Manaslu (8,163 m), Himalchuli (7,893 m), Ganesh Himal (7,422 m), Naike Peak (6,211 m), Shringi Himal (7,187 m), Nemjung Peak (7,140 m), Annapurna IV (7,525 m), Simnang Himal (6,158 m), Gyaji Khang (7,038 m), Kanguru (6,367 m), Saula Himal (6,235 m), Ngadi Chuli (7,879 m), Himlung Himal (7,126 m), and Annapurna II (7,937 m) Larke Peak (6,249m.)
Now, our Manaslu Circuit trek itinerary will take you to the trail of the Annapurna circuit at Dharapani where you will conclude your Manaslu Circuit trek 12 days journey by returning to Kathmandu.
Favorable to undertake in the lively spirit of autumn and spring, thus, our 12 days Manaslu Circuit trek journey presents a manageable challenge doable by newcomers to the seasoned trekkers.
Our Manaslu Circuit trek 12 days journey begins today with a long jeep ride to Machha Khola which will be the place from where we will be beginning our Manaslu Circuit trekking adventure.
From Kathmandu, our jeep will take us through the beautiful areas of Kalanki and Thankot to the wide Trishuli Market. From here, the broad asphalt highway road will take us further to Dhading.
Now the wide road turns into a narrow trail which will lead us to Dhading Besi. From here, we will proceed towards the Gorkha district. We will pass by the busy Market of Arughat enjoying the reflections of the Ganesh, Manaslu, and Annapurna Himalayas.
We will go through a few more small picturesque villages such as Maltar, Shante, Arkhet, and Kyoropani before we arrive at Sotikhola. It used to be the beginning spot for the Manaslu Circuit trekking journey.
The forward road continues through the forest taking us through the impressive small towns of Khursane and Labu Bensi before we finally rest at the humble shelter of the Machha Khola.
After putting on our walking boots, we will set off on a wonderful walking journey today. From Machha Khola, we will slowly walk along the gorgeous path next to the enormous Budhi Gandaki River.
Ganesh, Shringi (7155 m), and Manaslu can be exclusively seen en route as we keep on walking for about an hour to reach Khorla Bensi. Now, our beautiful path will guide us to the thermal healing springs of Tatopani.
The path now slowly becomes rockier and steeper as we move over scree to reach the impressive bridge over the Dobhan Khola. Now a track through the forest will guide us towards the 92 km long hanging steel bridge.
After the bridge, the pathway will now soon lead us into Jagat – a very important small and busy town inside the landmark of the National Park of Manaslu region.
A beautiful morning filled with stunning sights will greet us. From Jagat, our steps will follow the beautiful mountain trail to Salleri from where a gentle slope will take us down to Sirdibas.
Here, we will cross the famous Nepali suspended high metal bridge once more and reach the lively town of Philim. Greeting the Gurungs locals here, we will move on further downstream to Lokwa and then 1600 m high Ekle Bhatti.
Now, a trail traversing the lush thicket of bamboo will take us to Nyak Phedi and Peva Villages before we reach the enchanting land of Deng. We can already get glimpses of the Tibetan influence here evident in the impressively lined Mani Walls and the entrance gate into the town.
After we take our leave from Deng, we will set on to cross the restless waters of the Budhi Gandaki River and press on forward towards Bihi Phedi. We will then traverse the Serang Khola (a small branch of the Budhi Gandaki) and then walk over the canyon.
Then, we will ascend the sharp incline and reach Ghap. From here, the forward trail twists through the again dense thickets of bamboo leading us to the tiny hamlet of Prok.
Entranced by the beautiful image of Lidana Glacier, we will push on till we are finally at Namrung. This attractive small mountain village is encircled by the massive structures of Manaslu, Saula Himal (6235 m), Pang Phuchin (6335 m), and numerous other unknown peaks.
After Namrung, our journey will take us through the winding forest. Enjoying the peaceful melody of nature, we will keep on walking till we come up to the wider and open path.
After about two hours, we will arrive at the alluring town of Lihi which elevates to 2910 m altitude. The path here bifurcates to left and right; the right one will be ours while the left trail continues to the base camp of the famous Himalchuli.
Following the right trail, we will eventually reach the serene town of 2880 m high Sho. Lho is not far from here where we can already see the impressive Tibetan customs and culture in its people and their houses.
Later, after a quick rest, we will proceed to explore the Ribang Monastery of the village.
Today, we only need to walk a little so we will move at a very relaxed pace. After Lho, we will follow the constricted trail running through the gorge of Thusan Khola.
Soon, the lovely Shyaula Village will come into our view. But we will keep moving for about an hour and a half until we arrive at Sama Gaon. The stunning scenery adorned by the impressive presence of Shringi, Himalchuli (7893 m), Manaslu (8163 m), Ganesh, Naike, Ngadi Chuli (7879 m), Saula, and Simnang greets us in the village.
We have allocated this day at Sama Gaun so our bodies can harmonize with the high environment and the stunning surroundings of the Manaslu region.
We can either take the tough trek to the 4800 m high base camp of Manaslu characterized by the rigorous steep ascent. Or, we can also choose to walk a more gentle and inviting path that will lead us to the placid lake of Birendra (3460 m).
Or, you can choose to go the both astounding places and enjoy Manaslu from every point.
We have our eye set on Samdo Village today which is not that far from Sama Gaun. As we take a leave from Sama Gaun and resume our journey, we begin to perceive a notable difference in terrain and surroundings.
Once the dominant green forest now slowly yields to the wide high grasslands stretching to the horizon. One such high grassland of Kermo Kharka will greet us en route from where we will walk downstream and traverse the waters of Budhi Gandaki.
Now, we will take on the tough climb of about 150 m to reach the striking white entry gate of the Samdo Village. After a brief relaxation, we can move on to take the challenge of ascending the 5220 m high Samdo Ri or we can just wander along the vicinity of the small village.
Our Manaslu Circuit trek itinerary will take us above an elevation higher than 4000 m today. However, we will have the luxury of time so we will take the measured step and proceed upward gently.
Going through the high meadows, we will soon meet the magnificent Glacier of Larke. Now a gentle course of Salke Khola will guide us to our upstream path ultimately leading us to the high grounds of Dharmasala.
This magical place is also known as the base camp for the infamous Larkya La Pass, thus it is also translated as Larkya Phedi in Nepali. The local population however likes to call it Duwang.
The site is popularly known among travelers like us by the name of Refugee Camp and we can still see the remnants of the old Tibetan exiles.
The place not only holds the age-old history but is also a favorable spot to witness the Larke Peak, Samdo Himal (6335 m), Manaslu, Naike Peak, and the Syacha Glacier very up close.
The toughest chapter of our Manaslu Circuit trek itinerary is before us. We will have to conquer the fearsome Larke Pass so we will begin our journey at daybreak.
From Dharmasala, we will move on to traverse the eastern flank of the Larke Glacier. Slowly, our climb will take place along the rugged and snow-covered track.
This section of the climb is moderate and non-technical but certainly long and tiring. A 4 to 5 hour of relentless ascension along the rocky and glacial terrain will finally lead us to the last 100 m section of the Pass.
Here, we should be a bit vigilant and take our time with a secure footing. Once at the tip of the Pass, get ready to be enchanted and mesmerized by the heartwarming scenery created by the impressive towering peaks of Nimjung, Gyaji Kang, Annapurna II, Cheo Peak, Kang Guru, Himlung, and many more.
The wonderful spectacle definitely prepares us for the steep and vertical descent of around 600 m. We will pass through Larke Kharka and then Tanbuche (3900 m) before we climb downward to Bhimthang. On the way, we will be able to see the scenic beauty of the Ponkar Alpine Lake.
Enveloped by the gentle sadness, we will resume the last day of our trekking adventure today as we are on the brink of ending our remarkable Manaslu Circuit trek 12 days journey.
We will walk along the twists and turns following the timeless glaciers. We will soon be welcomed by the lush palm and banana forest situated along the edge of the marvelous Dudh Khola River.
Hugging the arm climate of Hambuk, Puktu, and Phute, we will eventually set foot at Gho (2560 m). With one last glance at the majestic features of Manaslu and Phungi Himal (6,524 m), we will engage in the sharp upward climb towards the Karche Pass.
Walking gently down the pass, we will shortly reach Tilje where we can see the amazing Dudh Khola merging with the Marshyangdi River. Dharapani is not far which will be our last mountain village for the night.
Kathmandu calls us today so we will leave Dharapani in a local jeep and make our way to Besi Sahar. Our Hiace will be ready to journey us back to the lively atmosphere of the capital Kathmandu.
We also operate private trips.
The Manaslu Circuit trek was largely off-limits to visitors til 1991 and it continues to be the special restricted destination till now. A special entry permit known as the RAP (Restricted Area Permit) is mandatory for the Manaslu Circuit trek itinerary.
Therefore, traveler undertaking this journey must travel in pairs with the company of a certified local guide and organize their Manaslu Circuit trek 12-day journey through a reputed and government-recognized trekking agency such as ours.
These rules are in place to protect the diverse unique culture of the Manaslu region. Additionally, the area’s lush forests are home to many threatened species such as snow leopards and red panda.
The region’s closeness to Tibet is also one of the reasons for the implementation of this restriction as Tibet also follows a similar kind of strict tourism in their territory.
Additionally, the neighboring Annapurna circuit has somehow lost its original charm due to the overflow of tourists so the government has wisely decided to maintain the Manaslu Circuit’s restricted status to preserve its natural beauty.
The best time for the Manaslu Circuit Trek will be the enchanting seasons of spring and then autumn.
Beginning from March till the lasting days of May, the springtime breathes a splendid life into the landscape of Manaslu. It is a joyful period after winter till the arrival of summer when the surrounding peaks of the Manaslu range burst into bright colors.
The rhododendrons- the national Nepali flower- bloom with incredible beauty creating a stunning feast for the eyes. However, the higher grounds may still remain under the thin coat of snow.
Autumn spanning from September till last November offers the best transparent weather conditions. The monsoon rain clearing the air creates the best clear cloudless sky, wonderful for the walking and the visuals of the high mountains.
Beginning from December till the end days of February winter sets in Manaslu immersing the region under the extremely cold environment. Sometimes snowfall can be heavy and the cold becomes extreme in the higher grounds of Larke Pass.
June, July, and August days welcome the high heat and heavy rain posing the threat of landslides and cloud-filled days most of the time. So the winter and the summer seasons would not be the best time for the Manaslu Circuit trek.
The 12 Days Manaslu Circuit Trek presents a medium intermediary challenge to the new trekkers whereas the experienced hikers will find it to be a fairly easy trekking destination in Nepal.
The trail leading to the circuit of Manaslu does not involve any technical hardships but the challenge lies in the basic conditions, high altitude, and the thin air of the elevations.
We would like to emphasize that there will be no climbing involved in this journey and the Larke Pass itself is a non-technical trekking mountain pass but its altitude rises above 5000 m requiring a long arduous journey on the day.
There will also be demanding ups and downs of the mountainous landscape where hikers have to spend 4 to 7 hours a day and sometimes even 8 to 9 hours on the rugged tracks.
Therefore, above the average fitness and good physical conditioning are necessary to handle such long periods of walking. Likewise, one should remain attentive to the high altitude conditions as well.
On our Manaslu Circuit trek itinerary, we will be sleeping at the 4460 m altitude of Dharmasala which can be quite tough for those not accustomed to such heights.
However, we like to point out that our 12 days Manaslu Circuit trek itinerary has been crafted to accommodate all levels of adventurers and not just athletes. With a bit of preparation, this trek can be undertaken with relative ease.
Yes, if you are just setting out on your first trekking adventure, then Manaslu Circuit trekking can be your perfect adventure trip that will allow you to explore pristine landscapes and experience a sense of adventure that is becoming increasingly rare in Nepal.
However, it is vital that you fully understand that this hiking journey is a complete high-elevation trek that will travel you through some of the least known tracks of the Manaslu.
The route around Manaslu is still in the early phases of attracting Western tourists and its has just been over ten years that Manaslu has been accommodating trekkers in their modestly built tea houses.
Therefore, the Manaslu Circuit trekking route still lacks the decent amount of lodges and comforts. You will also have to take the account of the changing landscape in your everyday journey.
Some days may take you through the dense forest and some days through the challenging mountain or glacial terrain. Additionally, you should also be ready to give up some of your daily comforts such as WiFi, hot showers, or private latrines. And, in exchange, you will be able to form a deep connection with nature’s untouched beauty.
The Manaslu Circuit trek 12 day journey while a very breathtaking and thrilling journey across beautiful nature comes with the inherent threat of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) or commonly known as altitude sickness.
As you go beyond the 3000 m mark from day 6 of our Manaslu Circuit trek itinerary, the thinning air may start to have its influence on you. Then, each day on your journey, you will begin to increase elevation eventually leading you to Larke Pass on day 10 that exceeds the 5000 m mark.
Taking into account this gain, we have carefully planned the daily distance that you will travel each day so you will slowly and consistently start to get used to the high air.
As the hiking portion begins, you will keep on progressing with a 3 to 6-hour walking duration followed by a well-deserved rest day at Sama Gaun so your body will be well-adapted before you get ready to face the tough challenge of the Larke Pass.
If you require additional time on the trail, such accommodations can be made. Even after these precautions, some trekkers may still encounter symptoms such as mild headaches, fatigue, appetite, and sleep loss, and a general sense of malaise.
Even if one sign is visible, you should remain alert and inform our guide who will start to monitor your condition and check your pulse and oxygen levels. If necessary, he may travel you down to a lower altitude or temporarily suspend your trekking days.
We suggest you to keep hydrating yourself during the trekking days and incorporate lemon and garlic into your diet. Additionally, you can also choose to take Diamox (anti-edema and diuretic medicine) for your quick acclimatization.
However, please ask your physician first before its use to ascertain that you have no contraindications for this medicine.
Before setting on for our Manaslu Circuit trek itinerary, please ensure that you have a vigorous health condition. In the existence of any severe form of health issues such as asthma, lung or heart conditions, it is wise to seek permission from your doctor before proceeding with us.
These types of health conditions can often worsen in the high altitude air where immediate medical assistance may also not be readily available. However, if you enjoy good vitality and fitness, then you can prepare for the trip 45 days before your trip date.
The best preparation and training regimen would be to put on your walking shoes and explore the beautiful mountain trails of your area. If not, you can also engage in the gym and follow a well-established workout plan.
If you plan to prepare at home, then how about practicing squats, cycling, running, jogging, and some stair climbing? For the mental calmness, you can engage in meditation and yoga poses. There are many online videos available for home practice.
Before you set out on the 12 days Manaslu Circuit trek journey, make sure you have the appropriate gear such as trekking jackets, quality backpacks, fleece jackets, thermal attire, good and durable walking shoes, t-shirts, etc.
If you long for the untouched raw beauty of nature with the sounds of the wild and the vibrant unique culture of the locals, then you can also consider taking a different route to the Manaslu Circuit trekking.
You can journey from Kathmandu to Manabu and start walking through the uncharted trails of Yarsta, Kasigaun, Keranja, Runchet, and Hulchuk. Here, the trail will join the one coming from Dobhan and you can continue on towards Jagat.
Please understand that these areas are just beginning to welcome tourists, so you may not find the usual comfort of lodges or tea houses. Instead, you will have the unique privilege to stay at the home of the locales and experience their hospitality firsthand.
Now, if you are not too tired and want to take the Manaslu circuit trek a bit too far for few more days, then you can also intertwine the Tsum Valley trek adventure as well.
This journey will allow you to experience the true and diverse nature of some of the exquisite settlements of the Tsum Valley such as Lokpa, Chumling, Chekampar, Nile, and Mu Gompa.
Or, you can elevate your experience with the virgin beauty of Nar and Phu Valleys by integrating the Nar Phu trek into your Manaslu Circuit trek itinerary.
However, if you are exhausted from the minor comforts and wish to indulge in luxury with nature, then how about walking along the trail of Annapurna Circuit after completing the Manaslu Circuit trekking at Dharapani.
This way, you can also see the minor Tibet in Nepal in the Mustang and Manang districts and it will also allow you to traverse the celestial Pokhara city on the way home.

When adding the coverage to your travel insurance, please ascertain that your policy includes the support for the search and rescue. Many insurance companies omit the extreme activities in the mountains that including trekking.
So make sure you have this activity included in your policy along with the extensive medical coverage, repatriation, and medical transfer to your home country.

The Annapurna circuit will make you feel like you are in grand arena surrounded by the stunning Himalayan titans. The Manaslu Circuit trekking on the other hand will journey you to the pristine and unadulterated nature where there will be lesser-known yet beautiful mountains as well.
The Annapurna circuit trail is already a well-established path which also offer you comfort along with the splendid hiking experience. The Manaslu Circuit trek on the other hand is still quite remote offering you the pure mountain setting and adventure.
So, if you cherish nature, Manaslu is a more appealing choice than Annapurna.
The Manaslu Circuit trek covers the significant distance of 177 km which is slightly more than the 130 km stretch of the EBC trek. The Larke Pass of 5106 m will be the zenith point of the Manaslu Circuit while Kala Patthar at 5644 m will be the apex point of the EBC trek.
The Manaslu Circuit trekking begins from the lower ground taking you gradually to higher altitude while EBC starts from Lukla at almost 3000 m. The EBC trail is already a well-known and established trail that also known for its comforts and luxury. The Manaslu trail n the other hand is still rugged and fairly quite challenging.
Therefore, the Manaslu Circuit trekking will be a bit tougher than the EBC trek.
The Manaslu Circuit trek guarantees your safety and security in every possible way and we will all be hiking as part of a guided group. Even if you choose a private tour, our guide and porter will be there with you, making sure you are safe and comfortable throughout the journey.
Yes, you can travel together with your children if they are old enough to tell you when they feel any physical discomfort. So we suggest not to travel with toddlers or very young children as the high altitude atmosphere of Manaslu can be a bit tough for them.
