Trip Overview

As there is a plethora of options in front of them, most of the adventurers choose to try the destination treks of Nepal, such as the Everest Base Camp Trek, the Langtang Valley Trek, the Annapurna Circuit Trek, and so forth. The trekking routes of Nepal are popular to complete within two weeks or more, but here comes this 4 day Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek with the same excitement in less time.

Poon Hill is one of the most visited locations in the Annapurna region, despite not being as well-known as the aforementioned locations. The majority of the trekkers on the Annapurna Circuit trek end up here due to the peaceful environment. With charming tea houses and pleasant views, the easy Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek attracts around 700 tourists a day in early spring.

As pleasant as it is today, Ghorepani was just a halt for the merchants to rest and quench the horses’ thirst. The travellers received water, known as “Pani” in Nepalese, for their horses, known as “Ghoda” in Nepalese, which is why Ghorepani. There were no human residents, as there used to be no facilities whatsoever. Khiban, another quaint village lying below Ghorepani, was the place that was popular at that time. Ghorepani began to have human residents as it was a part of a major trading route at that point.

The early 70s were the peak time for the Short Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek (early summer), which had a few trekkers during that time who motivated locals to open tea shops so the tired trekkers could rest and rejuvenate. It is believed that the first tea shops opened in 1973, and shortly after, the first lodge in the area opened. The most longstanding accommodation in the area is the Annapurna Lodge, which is owned by a family.

The simple Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is best known for its breathtaking views, with the excellent and beautiful flowers that bloom on the Rhododendron trees. The flowers are Nepal’s national flowers and are widely known to be used medicinally. With Poon Hill’s peak as the highlight of the trek, we will discuss more about it in detail as we discuss every section of the trail.

Ghorepani Poon trek begins in Nayapul Village and passes through charming villages, forests and fields. It is open to all classes of trekkers because of easily marked trails. As one progresses up the hill, the landscape changes as well and offers spectacular views of white mountains such as Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South and Machapuchare.

The most significant attraction on the Poon Hill trek is the sunrise at Poon Hill Viewpoint. In the morning, the adventurer ascends to the peak to observe the sunrise above the snowy mountains, shadowing the peaks. So stunning is this place that a human becomes tranquil and awestruck.

Short Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is a recommended trek for those who want a short but enriching trek in the Himalayas. The trek takes you to the Annapurna area, where you can discover the history, diversity in culture and a view from above.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is a trip that has more to offer than beautiful vistas; it’s immersed in culture. During the trek, one can get to know the lifestyle of the Gurung and Magar communities as well as their original culture by living with them.

The hike will also introduce you to warm tea houses where you can enjoy the best food of Nepal while also being educated on the history of Nepal. Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is a combination of nature and culture, as it is an adventure for people who experience adventure with a touch of spiritualism in the vibrant culture.

Trip Information of Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek 4 Days

Best time to trek Ghorepani Poon Hill

Although the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek can be done in any season, the spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) seasons are best for this brief Himalayan adventure. The best trekking weather is during these months, with clear mountain views, mild temperatures and stable weather.

Poon Hill is visited most during the spring (March to May). As you follow the trail, the forests burst into life with Nepal’s national flower, the rhododendron, leaving the hillsides in a colourful array of red, pink and white. The daytime temperatures are warm, the skies are mostly clear and the panoramic views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre and other peaks of the Himalayas are absolutely stunning. It’s even more fun to go as the wildlife is more active.

The fall (from September to November) is also a great time of year. Once the summer monsoon arrives, the air will become fresh and dust-free, which is great for mountain photography. It is one of the best trekking seasons in Nepal, as during the day it is warm and comfortable, while it cools at night and there is stability. Additionally, during the major festivals in Nepal, like Dashain and Tihar, the festive atmosphere is quite unique, providing another cultural experience.

For those who appreciate quiet trails and aren’t averse to cooler weather, winter (December through February) is the ideal time to trek. The mornings and nights can be cold, but the days are mostly sunny with a clear view of the mountains. Snowfall comes occasionally, which can create a magical atmosphere on the landscape, but higher areas of the trail can become slippery.

Monsoon (June – August) is not the best time of year. The trails are often muddy and slippery as a result of watery conditions and the mountain views are frequently obscured by clouds. But the surrounding woods are very green and pretty, with a different kind of beauty for those who don’t mind the occasional rain.

In general, go in the spring or fall for the best spring and fall weather, clear skies, colourful views, and the best view of the sunrise from Poon Hill.

Elevation and distance

4 Days Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek has a maximum elevation of 3210 m (10,531ft) at the famous viewpoint of Poon Hill. It is one of the lower altitude Himalayan treks in Nepal; even if you are not that into extreme trekking, the views of the Annapurna and the Dhaulagiri ranges are great.

Ghorepani Poon Hill hike is around 45- 50 km (28-31 miles) long and can be done from different locations and routes. You will be walking 5-7 hours a day on average and will be passing through charming Gurung and Magar villages, lush rhododendron forests, stone staircases and scenic terraced hillsides.

The trail has a few sections going up and down hill, but the gradual rise makes it easy for most hikers to adapt to the elevation. The danger of altitude sickness is minimal on this trek as compared to higher Himalayan treks, but it is still advisable to walk at a steady pace, stay hydrated and take frequent breaks.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek can also be modified to appeal to those who want a shorter trek and/or a less challenging hike and there are many options to consider in terms of the trailhead starting and ending points.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek daily walk maximum/minimum

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek consists of 4 days of trekking with 4-7 hours of walking a day, totalling around 8- 15 km (5-9 miles) per day, depending on the day’s activities. This trail is entirely on stone paths, forest paths and through the traditional mountain villages and can be trekked by a person with a reasonable fitness level.

The first day is typically the hardest, especially the known 3,000 to 3,500 stone steps from Ulleri to Banthanti. Although these steps can be challenging, you can cross them at a relaxed pace with periodic rest breaks. The rest of the days have a steady rise and fall through stunning rhododendron forests, terraced fields and serene Himalayan villages.

The highlight of the hike is to ascend to Poon Hill (3210 m) early in the morning from Ghorepani village, a 45 minutes to 1 hour trek. The climb takes place before sunrise, but it is worth the trip to enjoy the panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Ranges.

This is a relatively short and moderate hike, so don’t hurry. Your guide will go at a relaxed pace, stopping for time to take photos, stay in contact with locals and rest throughout the trip. The walking distances are moderate and with proper preparation and fitness, most trekkers can do these distances comfortably and enjoy this amazing Himalayan adventure fully.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek Difficulty Level

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of the most popular short trekking trips in Nepal and is a relatively easy to moderate trek for beginners, families, solo travellers and anybody who can walk at a reasonable pace. This trek is not as high as Everest Base Camp or the Annapurna Circuit, as it only goes up to 3210 metres (10531 feet) with the danger of altitude sickness relatively low.

The walk is not too difficult for most but will take several hours per day on rough mountain trails, stone stairs and forest paths. The hardest part is the climb from Ulleri, where hikers hike from the village some 3000–3500 stone steps onto the wonderful forest of rhododendrons to Ghorepani. The climb itself is challenging, but it is done at a relaxed pace with plenty of breaks.

There is no special training needed for doing the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. A basic level of fitness and endurance will help you enjoy the journey, though. Walking, hiking, jogging or climbing stairs regularly for a couple of weeks ahead of your vacation will make the excursion so much easier.

It is well signed and crosses beautiful Gurung and Magar villages, comfortable tea houses and beautiful forests, making it easy to navigate along the trail. It is a great introduction to trekking in the Nepal Himalayas with experienced guides, comfortable lodging and a gentle ascent.

It provides unmatched sunrise and sunset opportunities, breathtaking scenery of the Himalayas, rich cultural heritage and an unforgettable mountain experience with comparatively less physical exertion compared to other treks in Nepal.

Can beginners join this trip?
