18 days Pachermo Peak climbing, Excitement, challenge, and adrenaline in combination, you are one with our Pachermo Peak climbing tour. With ice axes, crampons, and ropes as your tools and our professional climbing guide by your side, we promise you will reach new heights on the surging, vertical Pachermo Summit.
With an altitude of 6187 m, the Pachermo Peak towers calmly in the rear of Rolwaling Valley at the foot of the Gaurishankar Himal (7134 m), at the southwestern transition to the Khumbu Valley.
First conquered in 1955 by Phil Boultbee and Dennis Davis, the Pachermo mountain is an attractive and straight snow peak with a well-defined northwest ridge. It rises from the flat and crevassed glacier straddling the 5750 m enormous Tashi Lapcha Pass, which is another highlight of our Pachermo Peak climbing itinerary.
The pass is over 5000 m of difficult but pure enjoyment that offers the unique transition into the much-visited Khumbu Valley, thus serving as its hidden backdoor.
On the other hand, we will not hesitate to say that the Pachermo peak climbing route is the most soulful route that also takes you through one of the best natural parks in the country- the Gaurishankar National Park.
Here, as if selected, all the wonders of nature from the abundance of gifts of the rhododendron and bamboo forests, to different climatic zones, to the whisper of the rivers and waterfalls are collected.
Whereas, the route is also inspired by the Tibetan Buddhism of the Tamangs and the Sherpa people with their exceptional Mani walls, Lungdars, and chortens.
The Pachermo Peak climbing is technically simpler, more than Island Peak. However, the physical commitment is not greater than other treks in the area, but the environmental situation makes it a trek reserved for people with good training and predisposition to wild environments.
Climb the Pachermo peak once, and this wonderful peak with exclusive views of incredible mountains, including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Annapurna, Cho Oyu, and Dhaulagiri, will capture your heart forever.
Our Pachermo Peak climbing tour in Nepal begins from the capital from where we will drive to Chetchet after completing the trip preparations. We will then traverse through the unique villages of Simigaon, Dongkang, and Beding village until we arrive at Na Gaon for a two-night stay.
Our trek will then progress towards the base camps and High camps of Pachermo Peak. After the summit climb, we will retrace our steps via the Everest Trail, passing through Thame, Namche, and Lukla villages. The journey will then end with a flight back to Kathmandu from Lukla.
Today you will land in the captivating atmosphere of Kathmandu. One of our designated team members after greeting you cordially will transport you to the hotel. After composing yourself, you can roam freely in the city streets like Basantapur or Thamel and get the first glimpses of the Asian atmosphere.
This morning, you will meet our tour guide who will clarify you about our Pachermo Peak climbing itinerary. Our colleagues will then get the permits for the trip and the national parks. If you are missing any equipment, today is the time to get it.
Next, we have planned a sightseeing tour of the city where you will take a brief tour of Pashupatinath, Swayambhunath, and Boudhanath. Rest early as we have planned a long day drive tomorrow.
We will leave Kathmandu early morning and get in our transport to drive along the Araniko Highway traversing the gorgeous towns of Bhaktapur, Banepa, Dhulikhel, and Dolalghat. Khadichaur will be our lunch eating spot after which we progress our drive towards Mude and Charikot.
The road now traverses the long hanging bridge over the Bhotekoshi River leading us to Dolakha known for its Bhimsen Mahadev Temple. The shining peak of Gaurishankar blesses us here.
Entering into the Tama Koshi Valley, we drive past Singati, Bhorley Jharna, Jamune, Tatopani, and Jagat. The 2-hour dusty road will then take us to the bridge over Gonggar Khola. Chetchet is on the other side of the bridge where we will give our driving journey a break for the night’s rest.
Today is the first day of our trek which is relatively short and will give a good start to our tour. We will leave the Tam Koshi River and climb up vertically to the eastern side for about 3 to 4 hours passing the forest and terraced rice fields to reach Simigaon.
The fabulous village has a beautiful monastery and impressive Gaurishankar (7,134 m) as a backdrop which marks the border with Tibet.
After leaving Simigaon, our track climbs up to a ridge. Descending from the cliff, we will now enter the middle section of the Rolwaling Valley where we will be surrounded by the untouched wilderness and thick forest of bamboo, rhododendron, and fir.
Following a steep climb, we will pass through numerous streams and eventually arrive at the remote outpost of Dongkang situated along the riverbank of Rolwaling Khola within a stunningly narrow part of the valley. 6257 m high Cheki Go Himal will be the highlight of the village.
The morning journey will climb us higher and higher and slowly the Rolwaling Valley opens widely in front of us. The thick luscious forests now is slowly replaced by the alpine tall conifer bushes and thin grasses.
En route, we walk past the several small settlements of Nyimare, Ramding, and Gyabrug Yersa before arriving at Beding, the largest settlement of the Rolwaling Valley, where there is also a school founded by Edmund Hillary. We can also see the exclusive panorama of 7181 m Menlugtse- the tallest mountain in the Rolwaling Himal range.
We will leave Beding behind and follow the rising path amid the alpine landscape with a few scattered trees here and there. Then ascending tract will finally turn flat taking us comfortably to Na Village, a sort of seasonally used mountain pasture in a flat area crowned by the bastion of Kang Nachugo (6737 m). It looks towards the beautiful peaks of Chobutse (6689 m), Chekigo, Bamongo (6400 m).
In Na Gaon, we will spend a day engaging in an acclimating walk. We can walk for 2 hours along the fairly steep winding trail on the southern side of the Na to reach the base camp of the Yalung La situated at 5310 m. The path is not long and we will have the opportunity to practice some climbing training in the afternoon.
The Pass is an exceptional viewpoint from where we can admire the grandiose views towards the Ripimo Glacier, the Gaurishankar, and Tibet.
After we return to our lodge, our climbing guide will train us on using climbing gear such as jumar, harnesses, crampons, and using ropes and tying knots.
Today, we will pass on the southern side of the river and follow a small stream. Then a sandy path will lead us to Sangma Village. The shaky wooden bridge over the river will then lead us towards the ascending path guiding us towards the Tsho Rolpa Lake at an altitude of 4530 meters.
It is a serene and holy glacial lake perched in Kabuk, its waters originates from the Trakarding glacier. Heading to the south of the lake, the camping site of Chugima camp is reached on the moraine of the glacier. The surrounding panorama of Chobutse Himal is splendid from the camp.
The proceeding days will be harder both on us and our porter team. Today, we will begin our stage with a steep climb up the lateral moraine of the Trakarding glacier. The moraine continues eastwards along the glacier with some ups and downs to its eastern end.
At this point, at the latest, we will leave the moraine and climb up the tongue of the Trakarding glacier. In a mighty environment, we will set up our camp at 4920 m before crossing the Tashi Lapcha.
Today’s journey will take us to the extensive 5,400 m high Dorlambu Glacier. In the early morning hours, we will climb over a steep, often broken rock step to the flat glacier tongue of the Dorlambu at 5100 m aka Rock Hill Camp.
This steep step is often one of the key points of the tour and may require fixed ropes for our porter team. The glacier scenery becomes more and more impressive.
The long, rubble-covered tongue of the Dorlambu, surrounded by the rugged and steep, ice and snow-covered six-thousand-meter peaks of the eastern Rolwaling will be our camping site for tonight.
We will start our morning by climbing the Dorlambu glacier via a steep section, which is partially secured with fixed ropes (short climbing sections I-II). The route will take us over scree and rubble and finally snow, ice, and firn with a high alpine character.
Beyond the flat, glaciated pass, we will set up the highest camp of the Pachermo Peak climbing tour at 5450 m. it nestles like an eagle’s nest close to huge rock faces and serves as our base camp for the ascent of the Pachermo Peak the following day.
If conditions are good, we will assault the 6187 m high Pachermo Peak today. We will leave the tent camp in the dark and begin the long, strenuous climb that leads along the long, repeatedly steepening northern ridge.
We have to leave the direct line again and again to avoid steep climbs and crevasses. Attaching fixed ropes may be necessary on some steep climbs (up to approximately 50° steepness). It is not until late morning that we reach the summit of the Pachermo and stand on a unique viewing platform between the high mountains of the Khumbu in the northeast and the Rolwaling Valley and the mountains of the Langtang Himal in the west.
From the summit, we can see four of the eight thousand meters high peaks of Solukhumbu including Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, and Cho Oyu. If the weather is good, the view extends as far as the Annapurna chain and the Dhaulagiri in the west.
After a rest at the summit, we descend along the ascent route for about 2 to 3 hours to the High camp, where our team awaits us with a well-deserved meal.
Today will be the last demanding stage of our Pachermo Peak climbing expedition. Leaving the High Camp, the path now leads over the 5755 m high Tashi Lapcha Pass. The ascending and descending route from the Pass will be equipped with fixed ropes in the steepest passages on the clear ice. We also have to be wary of the always unpredictable rock falls.
The path after the pass will lead us to a small lake plateau from where the trail is now increasingly better guiding us towards Thengma. The welcoming modest room of the lodge feels nice after spending cold nights under the tent.
The route from Thengma now follows the Thame Khola leading us to the artistic Thame Gompa after about 2 hours. The short exploration of the monastery will allow us to feel the extraordinary life of the monks.
The descending road from the monastery will take us to Thame and hike along a scenic path high above the Bhote Koshi to Namche Bazaar. Bakeries, Italian espresso, oven-fresh pizza – after days in the wilderness of the Rolwaling we have arrived in the land of modernity and comfort.
Our last stage of the trek takes us along the well-trodden path to Lukla past the charming Khumbu settlements of Jorsalle, Monjo, Benkar, Phakding, Thadokoshi, Chaurikharka and Cheplung.
Ending our Pachermo Peak climbing tour satisfied, we will settle into a cozy lodge and celebrate the end of an adventurous and unforgettable trekking tour with our crew.
In the morning, we will fly from Lukla to the small Ramechhap airfield within 20 minutes. Our transport will be already waiting there and we drive along small roads back to Kathmandu within 4 to 5 hours, where we check into our hotel in the old town. The rest of the afternoon and evening are free for you to spend as you please.
In the evening, we will celebrate our satisfying journey with our crew members with a tasty farewell dinner and some live cultural performances.
Note:
If a direct flight from Lukla to Kathmandu is available and permitted, we will reach TIA within 30 to 35 minutes.
Depending on flight connections, we will transfer you to Kathmandu airport for your return journey home.
We also operate private trips.
The geographical position of Pachermo Peak allows the autumn period and spring periods the best time for the Pachermo Peak climbing expedition.
The dry autumn time from September to November features clear air, purified by the monsoon rain offering exceptional visibility and very stable weather conditions. The daytime temperatures are ideal for mountaineers. An additional incentive is that there are comparatively very few other tourists around.
Spring also begins here at the beginning of March, and is a very worthwhile travel season until the end of May because of warm temperatures and blossoming vegetation.
Every mountain lover should experience the fascinating rhododendron blossom in particular, which shines with their floral splendor from white to delicate pink to dark red.
The chilling temperature in winter months (December to February) can make the Tashi Lapcha Pass impenetrable due to the thick snow. While the heavy rain in June, July, and August often block the passages in the low valleys.
The Pachermo Peak climbing expedition takes us to the pristine nature of the amazing Rolwaling Valley, situated 196 km from Kathmandu. The hiking journey begins from the small settlement of Chetchet, which is 185 km away from the urban capital, and 32.2 km from Tashi Lapcha Pass.
The highlight of this adventure is reaching the summit of Pachermo Peak at 6187 m with the highest sleeping altitude at High Camp at 5450 m. Each day, we will typically travel a distance of 16 to 17 km.
Our 18-day Pachermo Peak climbing tour includes 13 days of actual hiking, with an average walking time of 5 to 7 hours per day. On day 4 and day 7, we will walk for a minimum of 4 to 5 hours as we travel from Chetchet to Simigaon and Beding to Na Gaon, respectively. The most challenging day will fall on day 13, with a hike to the summit and back to High Camp within 8 to 9 hours.
Our Pachermo Peak climbing expedition is a technically difficult climbing and strenuous hiking journey in Nepal that demands a solid level of fitness and sound health. You should be able to carry out the daily walking stages between 5 to 7 hours every day. Please be aware that the walking duration can also be longer on some days.
In addition, you must be a technically experienced mountaineer who is confident in using crampons and an ice axe on 40-50-degree steep terrain.
As the journey progresses, we will reach the five thousand-meter mark when we proceed to the base and high camps before attacking the summit. Our maximum sleeping elevation will be above 5000 m which means an additional strain on the body.
Our tour is designed to allow good acclimatization with gradual elevation progression and minimizing walking duration. A rest day at Na Gaon includes climbing practice and acclimatization walks. Also, spending nights in tents surrounded by the high glaciers should not be taken lightly.
If you are new to both the high-altitude trek and mountain climbing, then the Pachermo Peak climbing tour is not for you. This tour is associated with alpine risks in high mountains such as the rockfall, steep inclination slopes, sudden weather change, and risk of avalanches.
Therefore, you should be a strong and experienced mountaineer who is well prepared for such risks. You should also be ready for a challenging tour with the option of a less frequently climbed, worthwhile 6000-meter peak.
For the full successful completion of the Pachermo Peak climbing tour, you should regularly do endurance sports such as running, squatting, biking, walking, etc. You should also be used to doing day and high-altitude tours and should not be afraid of longer walking hours.
You should also possess the multi-day trekking experience in the Himalayas and ideally also experience with altitudes of around 6000 meters. You should be used to walking with crampons and have experience with rope handling on ice and rock.
You should also have team spirit and openness towards fellow travelers and Nepalese culture. Therefore, the best way to prepare is with endurance training: regular running (jogging), cycling and long, more demanding mountain tours with normal daypack (approximately 6 to 10 kg) are the best methods to prepare for Pachermo Peak climbing tour.
We also recommend you do a few alpine tours before the Pachermo Peak climbing trip to ensure that you are familiar with crampons and to gain or refresh the glacier experience.
Another way to approach the Pachermo peak climbing is by starting your adventure with a flight to Lukla from Kathmandu. Then trekking through Phakding, Namche Bazaar, and Thame, you will reach the base camp of the summit.
From there, you will ascend to the High Camp and climb the summit the next day before returning via the same route you started on. This circular route is easy to access, short with great acclimatization but the walking route will be more crowded.
On the other hand, the route we have suggested takes you through the unspoiled nature of the Rolwaling Valley allowing you to immerse yourself in the rich culture and natural beauty of the region.
Our Pachermo Peak Climbing trip is designed that allow good acclimatization but the risk of altitude sickness cannot be ruled out. Especially in the first few days, you will feel the altitude gain as you begin your journey from the lower valley slowly advancing to the high mountainous villages.
Therefore, we have allowed sufficient time to give your body the opportunity to adapt to the changed environmental conditions. We will climb at a slow and steady pace and will take plenty of time for the acclimatization hikes and stages in the first few days.
However, some of our members may experience disbalance, fatigue, drowsiness, nausea, and headache. In such cases, our team is equipped with a first aid box and is fully capable of managing these symptoms.
We recommend you take Diamox, which can gradually alleviate these symptoms within 2 to 3 hours. If the condition does not improve, one of our team members will accompany you to a lower elevation until you feel comfortable enough to continue the trek.
For our transport to and from the airports, we will use a private car and for the drive to Chetchet, a private jeep will be used. We will make arrangements for your return flight from Lukla to Kathmandu or to Ramechhap. If the flight is diverted to Ramechhap, the private jeep will be used to drive to Kathmandu from Manthali Airport of Ramechhap.
In Kathmandu, we will be accommodated in a good hotel with free breakfast every morning. During the trek, we are accommodated in tents or lodges. The lodges in the initial stage however will be below the standard we often find in Annapurna or Everest region.
Three meals (breakfast/lunch/dinner with tea or coffee, fresh fruits every evening) will be in the lodge. In tents, our meals will be prepared by our accompanying kitchen team who always make a great effort to ensure a balanced menu.
In Kathmandu, Chetchet, Simigaon, and Beding, the national mobile networks of Namaste and NCELL provide better coverage for communication. However, from Na Gaon, both mobile networks may have intermittent signals until we reach Namche. We will provide you with a satellite phone for urgent communication.
The lodges along the journey may facilitate you to charge your mobile device, camera, and power bank for an additional charge. We advise you to bring extra batteries and solar chargers as the charging facilities along the route may not always be dependable, especially during a tent stay.
While WiFi may not be accessible in the remote setting of the Rolwaling Valley, mobile internet can be used for WhatsApp chat, Instagram, and several other communication apps. On the other hand, in Kathmandu and the Everest region, there is good WiFi connectivity.
