Trip Overview

Anapurna Circuit Trek 13 Days – Classic Himalayan Adventure with Poon Hill

The Annapurna Circuit Trek 13 Days is one of the most popular and varied trekking routes in Nepal, going to the most beautiful parts of the Himalayas and encircling the globally recognized Annapurna massif. This beautiful circuit is a bucket list trip that features stunning high altitude scenery, remarkable cultural interactions, and the adventure of traversing one of the highest trekking passes in the world, Thorong La Pass (5,416m).

Starting our Anapurna Circuit Trek 13 Days journey in the lowland areas of lush Dharapani, we spend the first week walking and ascending through sub-tropical forests, and alpine meadows to the high, barren, and desolate Tibetan plateaus where villages of peer-influenced Manang, Upper Pisang, and the rest of the Tibetan areas of Nepal have preserved unique and ancient world Buddhist cultures. For a week, the varying landscapes of Nepal provide an exceptional and unique experience, and for a week, we walk through and experience the terraced farming, dramatic cliffs, and waterfalls of the subtropical south, eventually to the snow covered heights of the Himalayas.

The most memorable part of the trek is crossing Thorong La Pass, where we see all of Annapurna, and parts of Dhaulagiri and Manaslu, all at the same time. From the Pass, the route down to Muktinath, a sacred Hindu and Buddhist site, is part of the pilgrimage. After that, we follow the world’s deepest gorge, Kali Gandaki, and end our trek at Tatopani with hot springs.

This itinerary now includes the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, which allows trekkers to enjoy one of the most beautiful sunrise viewpoints in all of Nepal. The view from Poon Hill (3,210 m) is the highlight of any Himalayan trek. The summits of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges are bathed in golden and crimson light, and the view is unforgettable.

For trekkers looking for a shorter circuit option while still wishing to gain a full circuit experience, the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Poon Hill accomplishes this well. This trek captures the best of Nepal: its majestic and beautiful mountains, its kind and hospitable people, and its deep spiritual essence.

The trail from Chame to Upper Pisang is one of the most beautiful parts of the entire trek. We follow the river valley and trek through stands of pine and hemlock forests, and cross suspension bridges over glacial river. A spectacular, and iconic, landmark of the region, the Paungda Danda, is one of the highlights of the trek. This enormous, near-vertical, and rounded cliff face rises abruptly from the valley floor. As we gain elevation, the air becomes thinner, and we get our first views of Annapurna II, Pisang Peak, and Tilicho Peak. We end the day in the lovely stone village of Upper Pisang, before which flutter the prayer flags and the spectacular mountains.

From Upper Pisang, we begin our trek on the upper trail, traversing through Ghyaru and Ngawal. This route offers some of the best views and most interesting traditional architecture. Though the trail climbs more steeply, it rewards us with spectacular views of the Annapurna range, the Gangapurna glacier, and the Manang valley. As we descend into the valley, we approach Manang, the cultural and spiritual center of the region. The villages of Manang with their snow-capped peaks, adobe stone houses, and monasteries, as well as their modern bakeries, crostinis, and lively, comforting busyness, have an extraordinary vibrancy and peace, and offer a fascinating juxtaposition to modern comforts.

Today’s laidback short trek swiftly steepens in gradient as we close in on the base of the Thorong La pass, Thorong Phedi. The trek shifts from pleasing climbing meadows to a more-server terrain of barren rock and snow. This is the most exciting and challenging day of the trek. To cross Thorong La Pass, one of the highest trekking passes in the world, we have to start early, often before sunrise. The climb is gradual but steady, and as we reach the top, we capture the 360° view of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and Gangapurna ranges. Prayer flags planted on the mountain celebrate our achievement, and after a brief congratulations, we celebrate with a summit of our own. The descent to Muktinath is slow and steady. Muktinath is a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists with its eternal flame and 108 holy water spouts, and we enjoyed the descent.

Meanwhile, porters are there to lighten your load by carrying your luggage, which is usually about 15 kilograms for each trekker, and they are the main luggage. This way you are able to walk with your day pack which is considerably small, and immerse yourself in the scenery.

Yes, for all trekkers, travel insurance is a must and it should include high-altitude trekking up to 6,000 meters, with emergency helicopter evacuation.
