Trip Overview

Hill Sherpa is pleased to invite you on 17 17-day Dhaulagiri circuit trek in Nepal that will escort you to the land where the Himalayan semolina grows. We thought this special circuit to offer you a delightful mix of fun, adventure, cultural experiences, and the extraordinary beauty that Nepal has in store.

Situated in the western section of Nepal, the Dhaulagiri trek route is perfectly positioned between the celebrated Annapurna circuit and the hidden gem of the Dolpo region stretching to 101.06 km in length.

Through this route, you can see the seventh-highest peak of Dhaulagiri from all sides, and not only from the north or south, as in most photographs. It is still unique and is given to a small number of people, and few know about it.

In addition, the captivating heights of Gurja, Sita Chuchura, Dhampus Peak, Tashi Kang, Tukuche, Manapathi, and Mukut Himal will accompany you continuously along the path. You will also experience the exceptional opportunity to walk upon the Chhonbarban Glacier.

Our 17-day Dhaulagiri circuit trek itinerary will take you clockwise around the White Mountain and closer to its massive mountain mass than to any other eight-thousand-meter peak. It allows you to cross the two mythical passes of French Col and Dhampus above 5000 m which is higher than most of the mountains you can find in the world.

Starting from less than 1200 m altitude, you will cross all the levels of vegetation up to the glaciers and moraines. From the Italian base camp to that of the normal route, it is one of the rare treks to pass at the foot of an 8000 m peak.

Then, as your journey comes to a close, you will find yourself in the Kali Gandaki, the world’s deepest gorge, nestled between the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountain ranges. You will then proceed along the historic trade route that links Nepal to Tibet, passing through Marpha.

Additionally, you will also encounter the Thakalis, Gurung, and Magars communities en route that have chosen to live apart from modern society, holding to their ancient customs. In these quaint villages, the lack of lodges and the absence of Buddhist symbols, often found in other regions, creates a profound sense of seclusion and detachment, perfect for those seeking a deep and immersive experience.

Overall, our Dhaulagiri circuit trek is an unimaginable adventure and a statement of your capabilities which is often referred to as the cradle of extensive mountain tourism and mountaineering.  Therefore, this trek is intended only for experienced travelers who are in excellent physical condition.

How does our 17-day Dhaulagiri circuit trek begin?

We will drive to Phedi via Pokhara and Beni in Kali Gandaki which serves as the starting point for our expedition to Dhaulagiri. The journey then takes us through the original valley of Myagdi Khola vis its original settlements of Jukepani, Bagar, Dovan, and Sallaghari.

Advancing through the subtropical mountain jungle, we will then reach the Italian Base Camp where we will find ourselves beneath the mighty western wall of Dhaulagiri. The Dhaulagiri base camp is reached via the Chonbarbang glacier at 4,700 meters below the huge north face.

We will then continue to climb to the glacier-free crossing of the French Col at 5360 meters and through the upper part of the Hidden Valley to the Dhampus Pass.

A long descent then takes us to the village of Marpha from where private transport will take us to Pokhara and take a mountain flight back to Kathmandu.

Today promises to be a long day on the road. Our private transport early in the morning will drive you from your hotel out of Kathmandu, then along the Prithvi Highway towards Trishuli River Valley.

We will be then met by Mugling-Narayanghat Highway where we will glide by the charming hilltop Bandipur Village. On the horizon, Ganesh, Fishtail, Manaslu, Annapurna, and Langtang keep on smiling at us. Soon, the shimmering waters of Lake Phewa come into view.

Continuing our journey, our transport will drive past Kushma and Baglung until we reach Beni resting at the junction of Kali Gandaki and Myagdi Rivers.

The road now passes through a series of picturesque villages like Mangalghat, Singa, Tatopani, Simalchaur, Babiyachaur, and Darbang. A police checkpoint will issue us our permit here after which we will progress towards a bridge over Myagdi Khola finally depositing us at Phedi.

From this point, we can say that the plains end and the road pretty much ascends beside the Myagdi Khola. Traversing the Shahashradhara and Ratorunga, the road rises along the hill taking us to Dharapani.

On a clear day, magical snow heads of Dhaulagiri I, II, III, IV, and V with Churen Himal can be seen in the distance. The road now winds through the terraced rice paddies, directing us to Hille Pokhari.

Today marks the start of our adventure on foot, as we set out from Hille Pokhari. The trail gently rises towards Takam (1670 m) from where the path track meanders down, only to rise and fall again, eventually leading us to Sibang Village. Gurja Himal will come into view for the first time along with Dhaulagiri.

Next, the bridge over Shivaratri Khola will guide us towards the now very narrow track which descends to the fertile mountain farmland of Jukepani settlement.

Beautiful panoramic views of the Gurja Himal, Dhaulagiri III, and Dhaulagiri V can be enjoyed from this settlement.

We have a longer stage today that initially takes us along steep grassy slopes, with several ascents and descents. The trail now climbs vertically 900 m above the Myagdi River to a small Pass at around 1700 m. The Ghustung South will be an amazing spectacle from here.

The wildly romantic, remote Himalayan track through the Myagdi Khola Valley will guide us towards  Mahatala and Naura. Just a short hour or two from here lies Boghara or Bagar village, where we can soak in the breathtaking vistas of Manapathi Peak and the majestic Dhaulagiri range.

Starting from Bagar, our walking route will direct us through the sparse jungle to the Jyardan Village. We will then overcome a sharp vertical climb up a slope to the ridge.

Once we reach this point, the trail transforms into a gentle incline, setting the tone for the adventure ahead: a series of continuous ups and downs across rugged, exposed terrain.

The path now takes us through the stone steps carved in the huge rocks towards Lipshe. After passing Lipshe, we will forge ahead through the dense mountain jungle, making our way to Lapche Kharka, which sits at an elevation of 2310 meters.

200 m more uphill walk and we will be at Dovan- a fairly large clearing in the forest with some cabins and a large tent area.

Today’s stage is a bit shorter and leads to Italian Base Camp. The tree line has now been reached and the view becomes clear of an enormous scenery. Slowly walking across the stunning Chhonbarban Glacier, we will have to overcome the strenuous and slippery track thus leading us to the 3500 m Italian Base Camp.

En route, the snow-covered Dhaulagiri I and Tukuche will treat our eyes. Reaching at the camp, our team will our tents for our meal, sleep, and rest. It’s amazing to watch the most stunning sunset over Dhaulagiri II, III, and V Peaks from here.

We will cross the valley descending and ascending over steep passages (with rope protection if necessary) to the terrace of Pakhoban. Now we will enter a deep valley, which is bordered to the west by the walls of the high seven-thousand meters high Dhaulagiri II (7751 m), III (7715 m), and V (7618 m) and to the east by Dhaulagiri I (8167 m).

After passing through the narrow valley, the terrain widens and the Chhonbarban glacier is reached. This is where the Myagdi Khola rises, whose course we have followed for nine days. We will camp next to or on the rubble-covered glacier at an altitude of around 4,200 meters with a view of the wild, glaciated northern flank of Dhaulagiri I.

A day for the eyes! On this great stage, the landscape is painted with Himalayan scenery. We will climb gently upwards over the Chhonbarban glacier and now reach directly under the huge, almost 4000-meter-high northern flank of Dhaulagiri.

Now zigzagging avoiding the ice cracks and small pools of frozen water, we will be over the snowy track so our progression now will be quite easy. Soon we will find the moraine through which we slowly ascend to Base Camp. Although there may be some garbage on the ground from the expeditions that frequent the area, at the heights the scenery is impressive.

Another superlative stage awaits us today as we go up high in the Himalayas, far away from any civilization. After an early start, we will climb the Chhonbarban Glacier, turn left, and climb, almost vertically, to a small hill. After a few hours, we turn towards the west and slowly climb to the French Pass at 5360 m.

It got its name because in 1950 the French Lionel Terray, Luis Lachenal, and Gaston Rebuffat first saw Dhaulagiri from here, classified it as impossible to climb, and then climbed Annapurna I (8091 m) for the first time.

The path now climbs up gently and is finally free of glaciers. We will stop again and again and look back at the mighty Dhaulagiri I, whose normal route is now clearly visible.

The route now leads over the steepening northeast spur and the long ridge to the summit. Several peaks of Mukut Himal, Dhampus Peak, and Tukuche Peak lie spread out before us.

Shortly afterward, the camp is set up at Hidden Valley at an altitude of around 5,166 meters.

Further down, we will hike across Alubari through alpine pastures, bushes, and forest regions. After the days in the glacier and rocky area, the lush green of the lush vegetation is a feast for the eyes again.

We will continue into the desert valley of the Kali Gandaki, nestled between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, to the stately Thakali town of Marpha, which is known for its apples and peaches.

Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, the wide Mustang, and Kali Gandaki will be the astounding views that delight our eyes. In our lodge, we will simply rest enjoying these amazing landscape impressions, and celebrate our  Dhaulagiri trek.

Trip Information of Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek 17 Days

Best Time for 17 Days Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek

While Dhaulagiri offers a protective shield from the rain for Mustang, it is not immune to the monsoon rains of Nepal. In fact, this majestic peak experiences heavier rainfall than many other regions in the country.  For this reason, spring and autumn are the most favorable seasons to undertake the 17 Days Dhaulagiri circuit trek.

The crisp, dry air of autumn (September to November) enhances the chances of encountering transparent days that reveal the panoramic vistas of both iconic Himalayan summits and hidden gems. The winter snow recedes, and the passage to the Passes and base camps remains clear of snow and water.

Spring in March, April, and May, is equally charming when vibrant forests and lively wildlife awaken from their winter rest.

However, the Dhaulagiri region in the months of June, July, and August is drenched with monsoon rain often doubling the average annual precipitation. On the other hand, December, January, and February cloak the region in thick snow with thermometer scaling to -30 degrees Celsius.

Elevation and Distance

The Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek in Nepal stretches for about 101.06 km in total. Dhaulagiri Base Camp which is our main target is around 200 km located on the western side of Kathmandu at 4700 m. however, the base camp is not our maximum height but the 5360 m high French pass is.

Our Dhaulagiri trek starts with a 200 km long road travel to Pokhara. Although Beni has been the traditional starting point for this trek, due to road construction, transport is now available up to Phedi, which is 95.6 km from Pokhara and 42 km from Beni located 303 km from Kathmandu.

Over the span of 17 days, we will engage in walking activities for a total of 11 days, during which we will traverse 16 km daily. The top sleeping elevation will take place at Hidden Valley, situated at 5,166 meters.

Maximum/Minimum walk per day

Our 17 Days Dhaulagiri circuit trek is a multi-day adventure where for 11 days, you will walk for 5 to 7 hours daily through the hidden treasures of Dhaulagiri and Myagdi Valley.

The daily walking stage will not be easy but it will not be monotonous as well as each day, the lush jungles, narrow tracks, gorges, streams, hanging steel bridges, and alpine land will be crossed.

However, most days we have planned will be lighter, particularly on days 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 14, where your walking duration will stretch up to 5 to 6 hours.

Among them, day 9 stands out as the easiest, taking you from Yak Kharka to Marpha, while day 12 will test your stamina as your walking duration exceeds 6 hours when you reach out the top of French Pass and reach the tranquil Hidden Valley.

Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek 17 Days Difficulty and Acclimatization

For experienced trekkers and independent high alpinists, the Dhaulagiri circuit trek will be of an expedition character, therefore it will be a great experience and easy to do in good conditions. But for beginners, it will stand out as the most arduous trekking journey in Nepal.

On the north side of  Dhaulagiri, you will be very isolated. If there is heavy fresh snowfall, this area can become a trap because in extreme cases it is not possible to go forward or back and better conditions have to be waited for. You must accept the risks present in this trek.

The French Col and Dhampus Pass crossings are technically easy, while walking to the base camps requires safe walking on snow and firn and in boulder terrain, possibly with crampons, a little steeper in parts.

When climbing the Chhonbarban glacier, the risk of falling into a crevasse is relatively low, but it cannot be ruled out. Therefore, you must master rope walking on the glacier and crevasse rescue.

Another significant concern on the Dhaulagiri Circuit trek is the possibility of altitude sickness. To counter this, we have planned a rest day at Italian Base Camp so your body will have time to get used to the high-altitude air before approaching the French Pass.

Can a beginner participate in the Dhaulagiri circuit trek?

The Dhaulagiri trek is not for the faint-hearted or those taking on their first trekking adventure in Nepal; it is a formidable challenge that even pushes experienced trekkers to their limits.

The track leading to French Pass and Dhampus Pass demands fundamental mountaineering skills, including proficiency with ice axes and crampons.

You will also traverse past the 5000 m mark where ascending and descending is not so easy. The biting cold on the other hand adds to the challenge, as this trek requires camping in the wilderness.

In addition, trekking alongside and above the Chhonbarban Glacier is also not walking in a park. To prepare for the challenges that Dhaulagiri throws your way, gaining experience through other trekking adventures in Nepal is essential.

Preparation and training for Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek 17 Days

If the Dhaulagiri Circuit trek is on your list, then prepare to transform into an active routine for 3 to 4 months in advance. During this journey, your daily routine will involve a walk along the rugged terrains, and some secluded remote regions with camping under the cold tents.

Therefore, focus on improving your endurance and increasing your lung capacity to absorb more oxygen through deep breathing techniques. Integrate jogging, running, cycling, and stair climbing as part of your daily activities, and seek out hiking adventures by joining a local club.

Begin with a simple trek like Poon Hill, then elevate your experience with a moderate challenge such as the Annapurna Circuit trek. You may also want to try the accessible Mera Peak to practice essential skills like using an ice axe, crampons, and rope walking.

Overall, your willingness to let go of comfort, adapt to changing circumstances/community spirit even in the most adverse, expedition-like conditions, tolerance of foreign customs as well as the support of the trekking guide and the local team contribute significantly to the success of the trip.

Alternate routes of Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek 17 Days

If your heart wants to experience the serene rural settings of Nepal, then Dhaulagiri Sanctuary Trail, which has only been known for seven years, is an excellent option. This stunning trek starts in Pokhara and makes its way to Beni.

Along the journey, you will then pass through delightful locales such as Galeshwor, Rahughat, Dagnam, Darmija, Ekrategaon, Chimkhola, Ghyasikharka, Dhar, Duwari, Patlekharkagaon, Khame, and Taple Kharkas, ultimately joining the road to Bagar. From there, the path continues to Dovan, following the same beautiful trail we have mentioned above.

On the other hand, you can also add the Dhampus Peak climbing to your itinerary. Before progressing to Yak Kharka, you can seize the chance to reach 6012 m of Dhampus Peak and then advance to Hidden Valley.

Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek 17 Days Altitude Sickness

During the Dhaulagiri trek, you will spend several days at altitudes above 4000 meters; the highest sleeping altitudes will be at Hidden Valley above 5000 meters.

Our itinerary offers a good altitude adjustment on the approach to the Dhaulagiri base camp before tackling the 5360 m high French Col and the almost equally high Dhampus Pass.

Still, you cannot neglect the potentiality of altitude sickness regardless of your health, fitness level or how acclimatized you may be. Many of our members have experienced only mild symptoms, such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, breathing difficulties, fatigue, drowsiness, and a loss of appetite which go on their own within 2 or 3 days.

We recommend walking slowly and steadily, especially in the first few days, so that the body can adapt to the changed environmental conditions (altitude, eating, and sleeping habits). Your organism must be healthy and resilient.

However, if you are looking to ease your symptoms quickly, Diamox can be effective, typically within a few hours. For a mild headache, Ibuprofen might do the trick. Make sure to inform our guide about your situation; they may decide to delay your trip for a day or two and lead you to a lower altitude where you can feel more at ease.

Transportation, Accommodation, Meals and Drink

Our 17 Days Dhaulagiri circuit trek is complete with the ease of private car service for your airport transfers. You will be driven from Kathmandu to Phedi, and then onward to Hille Pokhari in a comfortable vehicle.

On your way back, private transport will take you from Marpha to Pokhara, from where you will board your flight back to Kathmandu.  All transportation will be managed by our team, and the service costs are included in your participation fee.

In Kathmandu and Pokhara, you will live in a comfortable 3-star hotel, complete with all the necessary amenities in cozy double rooms. During the trek, when we reach the villages for overnight stays, we will be lodging in quaint tourist shelters.

These lodges typically consist of small rooms accommodating 2-3 guests, often furnished only with a bed. You will find a shared shower (which may not always be hot), a toilet, and the option to order meals. For the other nights, we will be camping under the stars in tent camps.

You will of course have the support of our kitchen team who will manage tent set-ups, cooking, and making you comfortable.

Your stay in Kathmandu and Pokhara includes a complimentary breakfast, with lunch and dinner left to your personal preference. Along the mountain trails, full board meals, which encompass breakfast, lunch, and dinner along with fresh fruits, will be provided at the tea house.

The key meal options will include Dal Vat Tarkari, noodle soup, spaghetti, and fried rice. When camping, our kitchen team will prepare fresh hygienic meals for each mealtime.

Communication, Gadgets charging, and Internet/wifi

Going on the Dhaulagiri circuit trek means stepping into a realm where the usual infrastructure of Western tourism is absent. This means you are going to miss the continuous mobile connection and internet.

However, local mobile networks such as NCELL and NTC do provide their coverage till Bagar Village. As you advance to Base Camps, and cross the Pass, mobile connectivity may be scarce. Our team does have a satellite phone for emergencies.

When it comes to WIFI, the mountain lodges in the region do provide internet access, but be prepared for potentially high prices. Additionally, the reliability of the connections can be hit or miss.

You can recharge your devices at the lodges with a standard adapter, though this may come with an extra charge. However, at the campsites, these services are often nonexistent, so it’s wise to bring along spare batteries and ensure your power banks are fully charged whenever you have the chance.

Permits for Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek

For our Dhaulagiri circuit trek, it’s essential to have the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers’ Information Management System fees (TIMS). Our guide will manage the process of obtaining these permits for you, and the associated costs are included in our package.

Yes, you can climb Thapa Peak more commonly known as Dhampus Peak while on this trek.

Our Dhaulagiri trek is best suited for experienced trekkers, as it presents various challenges including a remote environment, severe alpine weather, difficult living conditions in tents, the risk of altitude sickness, and the necessity of using crampons, ice axes, and ropes. For those who are new to trekking, this experience in Nepal could be quite overwhelming, which is not our goal. Please, first go for the Langtang trek, Mardi Himal trek, Poon Hill tour, the Everest Base Camp trek, Tamang Heritage trek, or the Annapurna trek.

The combination of mountains and back-to-basics can be the ultimate form of recharging for you. You learn time and again that you don’t need much to be happy.

No, tents and all the necessary materials for camping will be provided by our company, and our kitchen crew with porters will carry all the gear.
