Peak Season Flights via Manthali (March–May & September–November)
Lukla flights are rerouted from Kathmandu to Manthali Airport (Ramechhap) in the peak trekking seasons of March, April, May, September, October, and November due to excessive air traffic at Tribhuvan International Airport.
On the morning of your departure, your adventure starts in the early morning hours, between 1:00 and 2:00 AM, with a tourist group vehicle transfer from Kathmandu to Ramechhap’s Manthali Airport, normal drive duration of approximately 4-5 hours. You will enjoy a scenic 20-minute flight there on to Lukla’s Tenzing-Hillary Airport, the storied gateway of the Everest region.
Tip: Prepare for an early wake-up and minimal sleep the night before. This is the standard route for most trekkers during the peak season.
Off-Season Direct Flights from Kathmandu (January–February, June–August, December)
From Kathmandu, Flights to Lukla usually depart directly. On these mornings, you will be transferred to the domestic terminal of Tribhuvan International Airport (about a 20-minute drive from most hotels) for a scenic 40-minute flight straight to Lukla.
Flight schedules may shift based on weather and airline capacity, so flexibility is key.
To skip the early morning drive and long car ride to Manthali during peak season, a helicopter ride from Kathmandu to Lukla can be reserved. This pricier option provides a faster, more comfortable trip and the added advantage of an entire night’s sleep before your trekking beginning.
Packing: Ensure your trekking gear is packed and ready the day before departure.
Arrival in Lukla: Upon landing, enjoy a hearty breakfast and meet your porters (typically one porter per two trekkers).
Short and easy Trek to Phakding today – The trail begins with a gentle hike to Phakding from Lukla, following the river of Dudh Koshi. You will pass through small sherpa villages like Chaurikharka, Chheplung, and Ghat, soaking in your first views of the Khumbu region.
This is a relatively short but lovely walk and serves as a great introduction to the Everest Base Camp Trek and initial acclimatization. Take a sound rest at Phakding and prepare yourself for the exciting trek to Namche Bazaar the following day.
We leave after breakfast along the Dudh Koshi River banks, on a winding track that leads us over swinging suspension bridges suspended by prayer flags fluttering in the mountain breeze. The river sounds below, and the distant chirping of birds echoes through the valley as we climb into the interior of the Khumbu region.
In due course, we reach the gateway to Sagarmatha National Park, and here we halt for our permits to be verified before proceeding further into this ancient country. The trail begins to ascend, steadily at first, then steeply, as we make our way on into progressively higher terrain. At every turn, the panorama expands, snow-capped mountains stretch to the sky, streams of ice flow in the sun, and prayer-painted stones as old as centuries stand as sentinels along the way.
We will reach Namche Bazar in Sherpa town in the evening, which lies in a natural amphitheater of the Himalayas. It is surrounded by beautiful scenery and old culture, and we overnight here, with the rhythm of the Himalayas all around us.
Day 3: Namche Bazaar to Tengboche – A Breathtaking Hike on the Everest Base Camp Trek 10 Days Itinerary
An exciting day, another one waited as we continued our Everest Base Camp trekking 10-day adventure. Beginning from the quaint Sherpa village of Namche Bazaar behind, the trek gradually moves up towards Tengboche and offers us some of the best Himalaya eye candy around. Along the way to it, one is fortunate enough to view and experience unobstructed views of the Everest, the Lhotse, Nuptse, and the breathtaking Ama Dablam – and all these well worth walking to.
As one walks through enchanted pine forests, be on the lookout for Himalayan fauna like the shy musk deer or the hill-habiting Himalayan Tahr. The trail is loaded with nature and cultural marvel, with several prayer flag-covered suspension bridges adding to the experience.
Upon arriving in Tengboche, we are welcomed by the serenity of the Tengboche Monastery, in which a stunning 20-foot Buddha figure stands with stunning mountain views that seem almost unworldly. It’s an excellent place to break, take some time to think, and get absorbed in the spirituality of the Himalayas.
Day 4: Trek to Dingboche from Tenboche village – into the Heart of the Himalayas on the Everest Base Camp Trek 10 Days
With much ground to cover and plenty to experience, we begin our day early in Tengboche. As the morning mist evaporates, we climb on a slowly rising trail that winds its way through quintessential Sherpa villages, sacred chortens, and carefully crafted mani walls that tell volumes about the region’s rich Buddhist heritage.
Our path goes on along the Lobuche River and leads us into the beautiful Imja Valley, which is ruled by giant mountains and peaceful beauty. The beautiful Ama Dablam (6,812m) and giant Lhotse (8,516m) loom more gigantic before us with every step, offering us panoramic views in fairy-like style.
After days of trekking, getting soaked, we arrive at the high-altitude village of Dingboche. Situated in the unforgiving landscape, Dingboche is not only renowned for its breathtaking view but also as a mountain photography and acclimatization paradise. Surrounded by mountains and quiet, we’re staying overnight here in this peaceful Himalayan haven, preparing ourselves for the adventure yet to come.
Day 5: Trek to Lobuche from Dingboche village – A Solemn and Scenic Ascent on the 10 days Everest Base Camp Trek
By this point in your 10 Days Everest Base Camp Trek. The best adventure, you’ve crossed the halfway mark, and with Everest Base Camp just one day away, the excitement truly begins to build.
We set out for the day’s journey from the wind-blown village of Dingboche, making a steady climb through the alpine landscape that becomes increasingly cinematic with every hour. The route traces the glacial ridges of the Khumbu Glacier, with Himalayan vistas that are at once humbling and dreamlike. We pass through isolated teahouses and lodges along the way, providing fleeting touches of warmth in the thin mountain air.
Perhaps the most moving of today’s hike is the climbers’ memorial at Thukla Pass, a stark stone memorial to those who have died attempting to conquer these unforgiving peaks. Surrounded by fluttering prayer flags and held up by imposing summits, it’s a daunting reminder of the deference these mountains command.
At the conclusion of a day filled with wonder and reflection, we come to Lobuche, a larger and more active village at high altitude, filled with some cozy lodges, shops, and other similar-minded trekkers. Under the cover of night, the stars shine above the ice horizon, and excitement about climbing to base camp is peaking.
Day 6: Lobuche to Gorak Shep and Everest Base Camp – A Dream Come True on the Everest Base Camp Trek 10 Days
We begin our most anticipated day with a morning start from Lobuche, traversing across the tough moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. Although the terrain is tough, the breathtaking view immediately lifts our spirits. The north face of Everest and giants Pumori, Lingtren, Khumbutse, Mahalangur, and Nuptse tower above us like an ice crown.
The trail ascends gently at first, guiding us toward Thangma Riju (also known as Lobuche Pass), a natural viewpoint offering a jaw-dropping 360-degree panorama of snow-draped Himalayan peaks. From here, the air feels thinner but the energy stronger, we’re nearing the heart of the Khumbu.
Day 7: Sunrise and Descend to Pheriche – The Most Scenic Highlight of the Everest Base Camp Trek 10 Days
One of the most iconic experiences of the Everest Base Camp Trek 10 days, today’s sunrise ascent of Kala Patthar (5,550m) is the most famous panoramic viewpoint to witness Mount Everest and the surrounding Himalayan behemoths.
We start ascending in pre-dawn darkness around 4:00 AM, under headlamp beams and the soft crunch of crampons on hard snow. The route zigzags and twists through ridges of ice and rock switchbacks. There is less than thin air and tough ground to hinder us, the prize waiting for us worth it.
As the first golden fingers of morning stroke the snow giants, the world’s highest summits are awakened. At Kalapathar’s top, you are gifted with a stunning 360° panorama of Mount Everest, glimmering in dawn radiance, ringed by Mt. Lhotse, Nuptse, and Mount Ama Dablam, Lhola pass, Pumori, Lobuche, Lingtren, Khumbutse, Ombi gechean, and distant Changtse. It is a moment that calms the heart and soul, scenery of the kind that will remain imprinted in your memory for eternity.
With pictures, videos, and memories captured from the roof of the world, we drop down to Gorak Shep for a hot celebratory breakfast. Spirits buoyed and cameras full, we begin to make our descent, tracing the same route through Lobuche and Dughla, until we finally reach the quaint alpine town of Pheriche.
Nestled in a broad valley that is bordered by snow-covered ridges, Pheriche is a relief change in altitude and a feeling of peace after the hectic activity of the past days. It’s the perfect place to rest, unwind, and begin to absorb what you’ve just done.
Day 8: We journey downwards to the green valleys below after breakfast at Pheriche along a less-traveled path which we shunned coming up, retracing our route. The landscape slowly shifts with the broken alpine terrain finally giving way to more forest and rhododendron hillside.
Our initial major halt is Pangboche, a picturesque Sherpa village nestled under towering Himalayas. We split off from there towards the religious heartland of the Khumbu region—Tengboche.
The hike to Tengboche is serene and scenic, with panoramic views of Ama Dablam and Everest in the distance. We will pause at Tengboche to visit the most photographed monastery in the region. The prayer flags of bright color and breathtaking mountain scenery behind the Tengboche Monastery create an oasis of serenity.
If fortune is on our side with the timing, we will be able to observe monks attending to their daily activities, a moment of peace and cultural enrichment.
After this spiritual reprieve, we begin with the descent under pine and juniper trees, near the Sherpa village of Phungi Thanga, near the Dudh Koshi River roaring below. The trail rises briefly before flattening out towards Namche Bazaar, the bustling mountain bazaar once so high and out of reach, but now welcoming us home like an old friend.
Our final day on the trail begins in Namche Bazaar, where the mountain air and last glimpses of massive peaks remind us of the distance we’ve come. The familiar path heads downhill, and while less taxing on the lungs, the going is tough on the legs with its incessant rhythm on stone steps and suspension bridges.
Along the way for more than 6 to 7 hours, we return back through a line of colorful Sherpa villages that are now friends familiar to us: Jorsalle, Monjo, Benkar, and Phakding. All are stops at which to halt, take in the view, and soak up the terraced fields, prayer wheels, and whirling flags that border the trail.
We cross the milky waters of the Dudh Koshi River several times on swaying suspension bridges, the roar of water in our ears, as we go down further through Thadokoshi, Chaurikharka, and Chheplung villages that mark the end of our Himalayan trek.
Finally, we arrive at Lukla, a place once the start of an enigmatic adventure and now the provider of contentment and coziness. Lukla’s cozy teahouses and friendly locals in the side of the hill invite us to unbend, relax, and celebrate the achievement we have made—a journey to remember to Everest Base Camp and back.
High Season (March–May, September–November)
During trekking peak seasons, Lukla flights are conducted to Ramechhap’s Manthali Airport since Kathmandu airport gets too crowded. The flight is short, about 20 minutes, then a 5–6 hour vehicle journey through beautiful scenery of hill roads and villages back to Kathmandu. While the drive offers lovely countryside views, please note that road conditions and traffic can affect travel time. On arrival, you’ll be transferred to your Kathmandu hotel via a shared tourist vehicle for a comfortable return.
Low Season (January–February, June–August, December)
Off-season, there are flights from Lukla to Kathmandu that bypass the drive entirely. The whole flight lasts about 35 minutes, leaving you back in the capital without any trouble. There is a transfer waiting to take you directly to your hotel in Kathmandu.
Note: Flight durations may vary based on weather, air traffic control, and airline discretion. Always reserve an additional day in case flights are delayed.
Alternatively, for a faster, more scenic return, and to avoid the overland drive from Manthali, you may reserve a direct helicopter transfer to Kathmandu.
This premium option is particularly popular during high season, offering unmatched aerial views and a smooth, hassle-free return.

Book ahead! Shoulder season is autumn, and rooms on the trail fill up quickly.
Perfect for – Milder weather, beautiful rhododendrons, high-altitude climbs
Spring is also an excellent time for the Short Everest Base Camp short trek, especially if you don’t want to deal with the crowds of autumn. The paths are lined with blooming rhododendrons, especially in April and early May. Daylight hours are longer, which is ideal for a relaxed 10-day itinerary.

Ideal for – Solitude, snowy views, experienced trekkers
Despite winter being the off-season, it’s possible to go ahead with the Everest Base Camp Trek 10 days with the right gear and preparations. Keep your spirits and warmth levels ready to face icy conditions, as nights will plummet way below zero, especially at the high altitude levels. But, somehow, views become impressively unhindered, and you won’t spot quite as many fellow trekkers.
Caution Note: Winter in the Everest region translates to extreme cold and heavy snowfall, which can severely disrupt flights, obstruct pathways, and make trekking conditions hazardous. This should not be attempted by beginners during this season, only attempt the Everest Base Camp short trek in winter if you’re highly experienced or traveling with a good local guide who is equipped to handle alpine conditions.
