The Gokyo Lakes Trek 10 Days can best be undertaken in the autumn season (September to November), when the sky is clear, stabilized, and good for photography and for views of the mountains. The season of spring (March to May) is also very good, when the rhododendron forests bloom in great colors on the trail.
Gokyo Lakes Trek is assumed to be moderately challenging. Everybody who has good physical fitness, proper acclimatization, and is ready for the altitude can do the trek. The Gokyo Lakes Trek 10 Days is less congested than Everest Base Camp trail, and therefore trekkers can have a great time uninterrupted with the scenery and the remaining culture of the Himalayan people.
Regardless if this is your first trek in Nepal or if you are an experienced trekker, Gokyo Lakes Trek 10 Days will leave you with stunning views and unforgettable memories, as we immerse ourselves in the Sherpa culture and create a perfect balance of serenity and adventure.
Gokyo Lakes Trek initiates with an invigorating morning flight. The flight is from Kathmandu to Lukla, which is often named as the gateway to the Everest region.
Upon your hearty breakfast, you will be introduced to your seasoned trekking guide, and you will board the small aircraft. In the flight, you will be able to view the Himalayas, which will be one of the most beautiful views in your entire trekking journey.
Once you arrive in Lukla, we will greet the porters, who will assist you in carrying your trekking bags, to make your journey more comfortable. After a brief lunch, we will embark on the Gokyo Lakes trek, which begins with a slight downhill to Phakding.
This day is purposely designed to be easy to help you adjust to the elevating altitude, as well as to take in the serene beauty of the Khumbu region. The trail is surrounded by typical sherpa hamlets, prayer flags, mani walls and many stupas.
To Phakding on the other side at Phakding, you can rest at the teahouse after crossing a couple of beautiful swing bridges, including the one at Chheplung. You’ll spend the night at the teahouse, and the next day, the part of the trek is to Namche Bazaar. Prior to departing for Lukla, the guide will finalize the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit, which is necessary for the Gokyo Lake Trek.
Important Info for Gokyo Lakes Trek Participants
During the peak trekking seasons of Spring (from March to May) and Autumn (from September to November), flights to Lukla are prone to delay and diversion of Lukla flights owing to high air traffic. Sometimes, flights are diverted from Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport to Ramechhap (Manthali) Airport which is a 4 to 5 hours drive from Kathmandu. When this occurs, we will arrange private road transport for you.
In case trekkers are want a quicker or a more comfortable start to the trek, a helicopter transfer from Kathmandu to Lukla can be arranged for USD 500 to 600 per shared flight. (5 people maximum). This flight is more expensive than the road transfer and offers a breathtaking view of the Himalayas.
Trek Preparation for the Gokyo Lakes Trek
On the day prior to the departure, all gear for the trek should be organized and packed. Prior to the start of the trek, Lukla’s Tenzing-Hillary Airport will be the last chance to enjoy a meal. Porters will be available to assist you on the Gokyo Lakes Trek. One porter will be assigned to every two trekkers to make the trek as comfortable as possible.
The trek from Lukla to Phakding will provide a good chance to acclimatize as the trail is easy. You will be able to enjoy the quiet Khumbu Valley as you walk along the Dudh Koshi River, passing small villages and crossing suspension bridges. Phakding will be the first overnight stop on the Gokyo Lake Trek. Here you will be able to rest and enjoy the local hospitality as you prepare to continue the exciting trek towards the Gokyo Lakes and Namche Bazaar.
For the second day of the Gokyo Lakes Trek, hikers will advance from Phakding to Namche Bazaar. This portion of the journey includes a steady elevation gain through the stunning landscapes of the Khumbu Region.
The path remains the same as the previous day, with travelers continuing to follow the Dudh Koshi River, walking through foliage, and crossing the charming terrain of the Himalayas. This portion of the journey will allow travelers to appreciate the stunning nature while gaining elevation.
Travelers will notice the beauty of the area when crossing the various suspension bridges and streams. With a clear sky, travelers will have the opportunity to view Sagarmatha, also known as Mount Everest. This view will help create the perfect picture of the Himalayas.
The route also includes the small settlement of Monjos Village. This area functions as a park gate for Sagarmatha National Park. Here, the park rangers will check the permits that were distributed at the start of the trek.
Our primary stop today will be Namche Bazaar, a Sherpa town that served as a trading center for Tibet and Nepal for hundreds of years, where they exchanged goods such as salt, wool, and tea. Namche Bazaar has also become a vibrant town, scattered with eateries and shops, and has lots of trekking gear. It is an excellent place to purchase any last-minute necessities for the trek’s higher altitude.
Exploration, cultural experience, and most importantly, acclimatization, can also be done here. With wonderful views, a nice collection of shops, and a thriving cultural experience, it is a wonderful spot to add to your itinerary.
Acclimatization and a rest stop will be taken in Namche Bazaar, which is part of the trek to the Gokyo Lakes. After a large breakfast, prepare to view the high peaks of Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse. You will then be in the heart of the high Himalayan range.
Today, we will enjoy a breathtaking, two hours hike to Everest View Hotel, the highest luxury hotel in the world, with ever-changing, stunning views (and a great place to grab a pin). While snow-covered peaks like Kongde Ri, Khangtega, Pachermo, Tangerito, and Samdur surround us, we’ll be awe-inspired by the depth and width of the Himalayas and have perfect opportunities to capture the grandeur in photographs.
Once the hotel stop is reached, we’ll enjoy coffee or tea while resting on the terrace, surrounded by the breathtaking views of the Everest region, including Everest, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Lhotse, Taboche, Cholatse, and Nuptse. This moment is perfect to prepare for the challenges of the trek ahead.
After this nice excursion, the group will return to Namche Bazaar, where you’ll continue acclimatizing. Altitude sickness happens when the body struggles to adjust to high elevations, and this can be detrimental when not properly acclimatizing. Headaches, dizziness, fatigue and nausea are all caused by lower levels of available oxygen. By acclimatizing at this altitude for the remaining time, these risks will be significantly lowered, not completely eliminated.
On the rest day, you have the option to either explore Namche Bazaar, check out some of the nearby Sherpa villages, or do some light exercise to keep the blood flowing to help with acclimatization. It’s also a good day to organize your gear, hydrate, and prepare yourself mentally for the challenging trek to Gokyo Lakes. The guides are looking for any signs of Altitude Sickness, so it is important to report any symptoms for your own safety.
The rest day is a good mix of relaxation, culture, and not neglecting the important things for the trek ahead.
The day of rest and acclimatization should have replenished your energy, and your body is now ready for the trek to Dole Village. Today’s trek is another stunning one, although it will be another challenging one. It is one of the more difficult treks on Lakes Gokyo Trek, a mix of uphill and downhill passages.
Initially, the trail follows a path that is similar to the Everest Base Camp trek, going through the village of Sanesa. From there, the trail goes toward Phortse Thanga, leaving the main EBC trail, which leads trekkers to a quieter and less-traveled part of the Himalaya. During this part of the trek, travelers will pass near the sacred peak, Khumbila, which is a cherished mountain of the region. This brings in a more spiritual and culturally flavored touch to the trek.
With the trek progressing the skinny air and the altitude will start imposing its burden on the stamina of the trekkers. It is well paid off, though, when he reaches Dole Village, encircled in deep and spectacular valleys of the Himalayas, and it is a beautiful reminder of the grand seclusion of this portion of the world.
At this point of the trek, most of the modern niceties are gone. After Dole, trekkers will find simple facilities and lodges where some basic accommodations are provided, albeit with very limited electricity and services. The remoteness of Dole means that the comforts of urban life are lost, and trekkers are rewarded with a genuine experience of the Himalayas, where natural beauty is combined with a rustic lifestyle.
This section of the journey indicates the high level of necessity of patience and attention and makes people feel thankful for the challenges the environment puts on. Trekking is a good activity at high altitudes, and this is quite rewarding as seen in the Gokyo Lakes trek.
The altitude takes its toll at this point of the Gokyo Lakes Trek, and even brief walks of the trek may feel taxing. Today it is Machhermo Village, a mere few hours walk out of Dole, though the way is difficult, as ever-increasing up-hill paths make it so. This may not be true because the short distance is deceptive and as you climb, it gets tougher and harder as you reach a high level and test your stamina.
This is a fairly challenging section, although it is an uphill trail, due to its overall shorter distance. It is advised that Trekkers should take their time, drink enough fluids and be aware of their bodies, as going too fast at this elevation will cause exhaustion or Altitude Sickness. The next point of Machhermo is many miles away, and, as a result, one needs to take the second part of the journey with a careful and slow trekking pace.
Machhermo is a miniature, old fashioned Sherpa village, similar to Dole, and an experience of the isolated and peaceful Himalayan feeling. Once there, trekkers are able to rest and adjust to the high altitude. In case of active people, there is a short hike to the higher destination as an acclimatization period before going back to the village to stay during the night. This is an optional increase that assists the body to get acclimated to the thin air and it also rewards the trekkers with views of the valleys and peaks surrounding them.
By staying overnight in Machhermo, trekkers have time to rest, acclimatize, and get ready for better ascents which are yet to be accomplished in the Gokyo Valley. This day focuses on the equilibrium between work and rest which is an essential part of safe and successful high-altitude trek
This day is one of the most important milestones of our entire Gokyo Lakes trek as we will finally cross the threshold into the Gokyo Valley! On the way to Gokyo Valley from Machhermo, there will be a few moderate challenges, but anticipation for Gokyo Valley will give the trekkers some encouragement to tackle the challenges and will make the trek even more enjoyable, despite the altitude.
Frosty nights and chilly mornings will make sleeping tough, but a warm breakfast and an will energize everyone for the trek. After some time, Gokyo should appear on the trail, and everyone will be able to experience the Himalayas and the breathtaking glacial lakes and villages, which will encourage everyone to continue to Gokyo without stopping.
When trekkers first arrive in Gokyo Valley, they can admire the many beautiful features the valley has to offer. It is home to three major glacial lakes, whose turquoise waters offer a stunning contrast to the towering white peaks that surround the valley.
There are traditional Sherpa settlements at the shore of the lakes, where you will find cozy lodges at which you will stay overnight. In the spring and autumn, the shores of the lakes and the surrounding villages are decorated with green pastures, while in the winter, the entire valley becomes a beautiful, white snow-covered landscape.
There are many opportunities to explore the Gokyo valley which is a nature lover’s paradise. One can walk on the shores of the main lakes, take photos, and find other lakes that are concealed in the more remote areas of the valley.
The towering peaks that surround the valley are Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Makalu, and give the valley a stunning atmosphere that will make the experience memorable. The beauty of the valley will be a good opportunity to relax and acclimatize before the upcoming steep gains of the trek.
One of the most rewarding parts of the Gokyo Lakes Trek, and perhaps the most unforgettable, is the early morning trek to Gokyo Ri, which is an astonishing viewpoint of the Gokyo Valley. Gokyo Ri is 5,330 m (17,483 ft) tall, and is famous for having views of some of the tallest peaks in the world, including Mt. Everest (Sagarmatha), Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. On clear days, the view encompasses the 8,000 m+ peaks, lakes, and other stunning landscapes of the Himalayas.
Because of Gokyo Ri’s high elevation and steep ascent, it is imperative that trekkers go in a slow and steady manner to help keep the group safe. Failure to do so runs the risk of endangering the trek’s success, and could prove to pose serious risk to one’s health should they become acclimated. Even if a participant fails to reach the very top of Gokyo Ri, there is stunning scenery to view including lakes, towering snow covered peaks, and a plethora of other jagged mountains.
At the top, trekkers are able to rest, hydrate, and take in the beautiful views in every direction. The highlight of the trek is definitely the experience of being able to look down at the Gokyo Valley and have the breathtaking Himalayan mountains all around. After the group has enjoyed the view and taken pictures, they start to descend to Gokyo Valley to take a rest and have lunch.
After lunch, the trek heads back to Machhermo. To do this, the group must backtrack some of the trail that they have previously walked. On the way back, they still have a chance to enjoy the view of Gokyo Valley, take photos, and slowly acclimatize. The time in Machhermo is perfect to unwind and enjoy the calm of the Himalayas before the next section of the trek.
After the night’s rest in Machhermo, the trek continues to Namche Bazaar as we backtrack most of the trails we’ve traversed before on the trek. The trail takes us to Dole Village, where we will have to negotiate most of the uphill and downhill stretches again.
Although downhill sections may appear to be easier, your legs are bound to be tired from the high altitude trekking during the previous days. Make sure to watch every step during this trek and use your trekking poles to avoid injuries from muscle strain, sprains, and other associated injuries.
This trek is more than just physical work. It gives the chance to appreciate the seclusion of the trails and the different views of the high altitude rivers, valleys, and the numerous bridges on the rivers we have previously crossed.
It also gives the sense of achievement that comes with the completion of the trek to the Gokyo Valley. The views on the landscapes and the mountains are also very rewarding and will make the trekkers appreciate the beauty of the region even more. Amenities at Namche Bazaar offer trekkers a chance to rest, enjoy modern conveniences, and shop for souvenirs and local crafts before continuing their journeys. Interactions with local vendors and a well-stocked market add to the experience while leaving time for the cultural immersion Namche Bazaar provides. After Lukla, Namche Bazaar is the last stop before continuing on the journey towards Lukla.
Now on the tenth day, we will complete a large portion of the journey from Namche Bazaar to Lukla. Retracing our old path to Lukla, we will stop over Phakding, a town we have previously stayed in. With Phakding and the rest of the scenery are leg-groomed to phlegmatic, calm legs. The downhill trek is easier than the altitudinal ascents, but still requires diligence to rest the legs and joints.
As we arrive in Lukla, our excitement peaks as it is home to the world’s most dangerous commercial airport, where the plane lands on a sloped, short, and rocky runway surrounded by high mountains. Arriving in Lukla in the morning will give us sufficient time to relax, wander, and think about the fantastic journey that we are completing through Gokyo Valley and the Himalayas.
In contrast to the other remote tourist gers along the trek, Lukla has decent tourist accommodations, making it a nice resting spot after the trek. Additionally, an overnight stay allows us to ensure we catch the flights, as Lukla airport only has flights in the morning due to weather. Trekkers will have the privilege of a nice warm night, exchanging stories with fellow hikers, and enjoying the final views of the mountains before we end the trek to the Himalayas.
You begin your most exciting yet mundane journey to Kathmandu the day after your last night in Lukla. You eat breakfast, and as per the standard schedule, you arrive at Lukla Airport with all your passenger bags, and the airport staff quickly check you in for your flight. The trekkers can get geared up for the flight and for the last flight over the Himalayas.
The take-off from Lukla Airport is as memorable as its legendary landing. The flight is surrounded by steep mountains and narrow valleys. It provides panoramic views of the Everest region, offering trekkers one additional spectacular view of the peaks and trails they’ve just conquered.
The Lukla Airport has a most impressive reputation for its difficult operations and its Lukla pilots. This provides customers with the best pilots for a safe and comfortable flight back to the Kathmandu Valley, defying the place of operating Lukla.
After the long and arduous trek, you arrive in Kathmandu, where we will take you to your assigned hotel/ guesthouse. You can finally lie down and relax as you have just come back from trekking through some of the best landscapes the Earth has to offer. This is the Gokyo Lakes Trek, which is now a finished chapter of your life. You will always remember the views, and the journey should bring you a great sense of achievement.
We also operate private trips.
Spring (March to May)
Spring offers one of the best and most beautiful opportunities for trek to Gokyo Lakes. Weather conditions during this season are mild and stable. It often consists of clear and comfortable conditions even at the highest altitudes. A significant highlight during this period is the blooming of the rhododendron trees. It paints the forests along the trek, with vibrant and beautiful colors, consisting of multiple shades of red, pink, and white. The flora and bird life are at their best during this period, and many nature devote photographers and nature lovers flock to the Gokyo Valley to enjoy the best of what the region has to offer.
Fall (September to November)
Fall is considered the top season for the Gokyo Lakes Trek. After the monsoon rains, the skies are clear, and the mountains are at their most majestic. Daytime temperatures are nice and cool. Nighttime temperatures are cold, but manageable. The trails are dry, and the risk of slips and mudslides is low. With the current being the peak trekking season in Nepal, autumn provides full vibrant trails and active Sherpa villages for cultural experiences next to the mountains. For perfect mountain shots, Gokyo Lake Trek in autumn provides unmatched photography opportunities.
Spring (June to August)
This season coincides with the monsoon season for Nepal, and with that comes heavy rain and risk of landslides. 10 Days Gokyo Lakes Trek is at its most challenging at this season with lots of terrain becoming more dangerous because of high water levels. Since the land is also very green, this is often the most scenic time, but new trekkers to Gokyo Lake should be prepared with the right gear and be mentally flexible to make the most of this scenic season.
Winter (December to February)
Trekking to Gokyo Lakes in the winter is possible but challenging. The highest temperatures can drop below freezing in the winter. Due to the risk of snow and other obstructions, some lodges and teahouses close down the trek.
Due to the elevated level of challenge and risk, the Gokyo Lakes Trek in the winter is only suited for more experienced trekkers with winter gear. However, there are many benefits to winter trekking like the peace and quiet of the trekking trails, the clear winter skies, and the stunning views of the snow covered mountains. These are great for those who want to experience the isolation and the untouched beauty of the mountains.
Yes, beginners can join the trek, but strongly encouraged to prepare ahead of time for the trek. The trek is moderately rate,d but there are a lot of daily challenges including multiple days of extended walking, climbing up and down elevation, and exposure to altitude changes when you reach the top of Gokyo Ri at over 5,000 meters. Further preparation may even include physical activities like cardio, strength, as well as, endurance building exercises. The guides will be sure to lead a positive atmosphere and will support you in completing the trek so that you can experience the amazing views.
The Gokyo Lakes Trek 10 Days has a moderate level of difficulty, as it can be completed by most trekkers who are of reasonable fitness and preparedness. Although no technical climbing skills are required for the journey, the trek traverses the challenging high-altitude terrain of the Himalayas, which can be rough for untrained trekkers. Gokyo Ri is the highest point of the trek, which surpasses 5,000 meters. Therefore, Gokyo Ri is not an optional trek, as proper acclimatization at the peak is necessary in order to mitigate the dangers of altitude sickness.
The trail of Gokyo Lakes consists of a series of uphill and downhill challenges, which can be conquered by even the most beginner trekkers. This trek, for the most part, is up to the trekkers to show a level of responsibility in order to meet the harsh isolation of the Khumbu Valley. This means that hospitals, shops, and communication systems are nonexistent. This isolation, equally, is one of the challenges of the trek.
The weather and resulting temperatures also present a challenge. During the trek, the temperatures can drop to sub-zero levels which can be uncomfortable and even dangerous. Proper gear, warm clothing, and positive mindset are very important for a safe trek.
With enough preparation and fitness training the trek can be accomplished, but it is not a suitable trek for children, seniors, or travelers with serious health complications as they may be more at risk for the effects of altitude, cold, and exhaustion. The trek to the Gokyo Lakes, which is a ten day excursion, presents a challenge for even healthy adults, but is an extremely satisfying trek which includes stunning glacial lakes, splendid views of the Himalayas, and serene Sherpa settlements.
The Gokyo Lakes trek 10 Days has risk factors associated with altitude sickness and the dangers of this illness above 5,000 meters are considerable. These risks can lead to severe headaches, increasing levels of dizziness, fatigue, and even prolonged appetite loss. Sufficient acclimatization, gradual gains in altitude, a consistent supply of water, and being mindful of the symptoms associated with this illness are of the utmost importance. These factors are to ensure trekkers’ well-being and are monitored closely by experienced guides.

We take care of all the permits and include them in the package cost so that trekkers don’t have to worry about anything other than enjoying the trek.
The Gokyo Lakes Trek 10 Days is a trek that requires a good deal of physical fitness and mental preparation. Trekkers should engage in some preparatory cardio exercise, hiking practice, and some strengthening work on legs and core. Additionally, mental preparation is as important as physical preparation because the cold weather, altitude, and remote nature of the trek could prove to be daunting. With the right mental and physical preparation, trekkers will enjoy the experience of the Gokyo Lake Trek.
The Gokyo Lakes Trek 10 Days offers very limited access to both electricity and the internet, especially at higher altitudes where there is less power. While some lodges offer extra charger services for a fee, and Wi-Fi may be provided at some other lodges, it is likely that trekkers will be without access. It is recommended that trekkers bring power banks and extra batteries while hiking in the remote Himalayan area.
Every day on the Gokyo Lakes Trek 10 Days starts with the calmness of the Himalayan mornings, with trekkers waking up to impressive views of the mountains, and the soft sound of kettles being boiled in the lodges. The warm, filling breakfasts and mountain views are accompanied by the loud and proud Gokyo Lakes. These moments in the mountains set the mood for the day ahead.
After breakfast, which ends between 7 and 8 am, the trekkers get ready by filling their bags and their water bottles and putting on their hiking boots. The path then drives deep into the Khumbu region, where the landscape constantly alters; at times, it becomes an ascent, while at other times it becomes a descent, and it will cross iconic suspension bridges and walk along wide and flat sections of the mountains, walking along flat sections in the valleys.
On most days of the trek in the Gokyo Lakes Trek 10 Days adventure, walkers will spend about 4 to 5 hours walking, which is a nice, steady and comfortable pace. There will be some days with longer walks of about 6 to 7 hours and this is due to a few specific sections of the trek such as the walk up Gokyo Ri and the walk back down to Namche Bazaar and Lukla. These moments of cultural experience and connection are some of the most cherished of the Gokyo Lakes Trek 10 Days.

Being of moderate difficulty, the Gokyo Lakes Trek 10 Days is a great fit for new and seasoned trekkers, and other route variations add extra adventure to the journey.
Combining treks is one of the most fulfilling journeys in the Everest region. While enjoying the peaceful stunning sceneries of the Gokyo Valley he has one of the most famous destinations of the Everest Base Camp. Trekkers have two options: visit Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) and later on Kala Patthar (5,644 m) or the Gokyo Lake Trek. The latter is usually a bit more challenging. Apart from getting to Gokyo, trekkers also get the chance to see the remarkable views of the Himalayan mountains, the incredible sceneries, and the rare experience of being right under the highest mountain in the world.
For trekkers who want more challenge without the added risk of high technical climbing, the Gokyo Lakes Trek 10 Days has an extension option to include the Renjo La Pass (5,360 m). The views from this high mountain Pass are Sparking Gokyo Valley and Everest with Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. Even athough this is a challenging mountain physically, the climb is structured and achievable by most trekkers. Crossing over the Renjo La is an exciting addition to the Gokyo Lake Trek and a fantastic way to prepare trekkers for more difficult experiences in the Himalayas.
The Everest Three Passes Trek plus the Gokyo Lake Trek is one of the most difficult itineraries in the Everest area, and best suited for extremely seasoned trekkers. It involves the crossing of three high passes: Kongma La (5,535 m), Cho La (5,420 m), Renjo La (5,360 m), and visits Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar. Trekking the various valleys of Dudh Khoshi, Imja, Gokyo, and Bhote Khoshi offers unique and stunning scenery for each of the valleys. General
On average, the entire Gokyo Lakes Trek takes about 10 days. This includes a round-trip to Lukla and/or Kathmandu. The trek includes stops at Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Machhermo, Dole, Gokyo Valley, and Gokyo Ri to allow for time to acclimatize.
Each day of the trek, participants are expected to walk 4-7 hours, depending on factors like the terrain, altitude, and elevation gain. This time is built in to allow trekkers to take in the views of the lakes, the Himalayas, and the Sherpa villages while not feeling rushed.
The Gokyo Lakes Trek is possible any time of year, but is best in the Fall (September to November) or Spring (March to May). Autumn has most of the rain and cloud cover gone, which means hikers can have clear views of the Himalayas.
Summer trekking will also have dry trails and comfortable temperatures making for good trekking conditions. Spring has the blooming of the Rhododendron trees providing vibrant pinks, reds, and whites to the trail. These 2 seasons combined have the best chances at photos, so be sure to bring a camera.
Yes, the Gokyo Lakes Trek is often combined with other treks to make the adventure longer, with treks like Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar being the most common.
Crossing the Renjo La Pass (5,360 m) is also common and is the most challenging of the bunch, but it definitely comes with the greatest reward with the most grand views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. The Himalayan experience is extended with combined treks as more valleys, glacial lakes, and culture are added to the journey.
Preparation & Fitness
Definitely. However, prior to this trek, it is advised that beginners do some cardio, strength, and endurance workouts. The trek does go to high altitudes and Gokyo Ri is over 5,000 meters.
The trek is managed by experienced guides, and safety is prioritized, so it is a good trek for newcomers, as long as they are committed to preparation and willing to take it step by step.
The moderate challenge of the Gokyo Lakes Trek is attributed to the need for some technical climbing skills. Expect to walk long distances and sustain consistent altitude changes. Expect to challenge yourself mentally and physically. Make sure to prepare yourself.
This means building your stamina and acclimatizing yourself to the altitude. Gokyo Ri stands at 5,357 meters and is the biggest challenge of the trek.
The Gokyo Lakes Trek is not recommended for young children and elderly trekkers, and, due to the physical demands and exposure to high altitudes, it is not recommended for travelers with serious health issues. The daily treks involve long working hours of walking, along with uphill climbs, and, in addition, there are variable weather conditions, and all of these can be challenging.
Adults in reasonable fitness and with the right kind of preparation can manage the trek without any issues, but there is no medicine for being cautious about those with health conditions.
Permits
Trek to Gokyo Lakes, Sagarmatha National Park Permit (SNP) is required as the trek passes through Sagarmatha National Park. In addition, trekkers are required to obtain the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit, which is required for the local trekking permits.
Trek operators manage all of these permits for the trekkers so that they can focus on the trek, as all the legal aspects are taken care of before the trek begins.
Accommodation and Facilities
On the trek, accommodation is in basic lodges and teahouses. These offer warm and comfortable places to rest after long trekking days. Most teahouses sell basic rooms, with shared or private bathrooms, and some offer meals and hot drinks. While the facilities are modest compared to city hotels, they allow trekkers to experience genuine Sherpa hospitality and immerse themselves into the local culture.
At higher altitudes, amenities and services are more limited, so trekking with personal and essential items is advisable.
Health & Safety
Yes, altitude sickness can occur for trekkers above 3,000 meters, and the Gokyo Lakes Trek, including Gokyo Ri, has its highest points above 5,000 meters. If unaddressed, the symptoms can get worse as trekkers may experience headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and nausea. Some key preventive measures are to ensure your body has proper acclimatization and gradual altitude gain, staying hydrated, and listening to your body, which are key.
The guides tend to monitor the trekkers, and they can offer suggestions to avoid the high altitude trekking headaches.
Packing & Gear
Choosing what to pack for the Gokyo Lakes trek is a careful consideration, as there is extreme weather (below freezing and winds), high altitudes (over 5,300 meters), and plenty of wilderness.
Trekking boots and a warm sleeping bag are items that should definitely be included, as well as items that can be used to cover the face (like a mask or scarf), beanies, sun blocking gloves, and sunglasses. You should also bring water, a first aid kit, trekking poles, portable battery chargers, and trekking poles.
When preparing for the trek, emphasis should be placed on comfort and protective gear (especially to protect yourself from the elements, including the wind and high UV Rays, as weather can change and become dangerous quickly).
