The Island peak climbing from Chhukung (or Imja Tse, 6,189m) is a very popular trekking peak in Nepal which gives all the good things of Himalayan trekking and alpine climb to a single person in a single event. To begin with, this 3 days Island Peak climbing commences at the lovely village of Chhukung located in the Everest region, and it offers a great climber who wants to experience the high altitude adventure, mountain views, and ease of climb.
Represented by the professional Hill Sherpa Trekking Team, which is based in the region and has the solid experience, this adventure can offer you a chance to climb one of the most beautiful mountains of the world without long acclimatization itineraries and expensive logistics.
The trail between the camps at Chhukung and Island Peak is harsh Himalayan terrain, glacier walking, and backcountry. It offers a panoramic view of Lhotse, Makalu, Baruntse, Ama Dablam and to places at least it offers a view of Mount Everest, though not always in front of Lhotse.
The climb to the top will be characterized by crossing over the icy moraines and climbing up glaciers and all this will involve the climbing gear that includes crampons, ice axes, ropes and in most occasions ladders. Despite the fact that in one day one could reach the top starting at the base camp, body strength is demanding and stamina is needed. You will be climbing over 5,000 meters high where the oxygen supply is not ample and each step up leaves you at the edge.
At base camp, before heading up the mountain, there will be a short acclimatization curriculum and a bit of basic instruction in using technical gear. A climb to the summit starts typically at 1 AM and takes a steep climb up a glacier, scaling a steep ice wall near the summit and finally on a snow ridge to the summit.
Where once there existed a High Camp which was used in a bid to split the climb into smaller portions, this is no longer accessible owing to the landslides and water shortage.
From Chhukung to Island peak climbing package would be the ideal help to self-guided climbers who need local information and professional guide. They operate under the Hill Sherpa Trekking Team based in Chhukung and consist of highly experienced Sherpa guides who are the residents of the mountains and are well familiar with the mountain. They also have a convenient and protected ascent because they know the route, weather conditions and safety regulations.

Island Peak Climbing from Chhukung begins calmly at 8 or 9 am, going to the Base Camp and facing Island Peak almost in an upright position. We will turn round in direction to the south, and on the rocky trail will go up in direction of the east. And later on we shall very cautiously follow the greasy glacier path of the Imja and Lhotse Glaciers till a broad valley opens before us at the base of the Southwest flank of the Island Peak.
Our lunch will be cooked by the cook of our base camp and we will share tents. In base camp we will have practicing with climbing gear and our knowledgeable Sherpa guide will impart skills that we will find useful when we climb Imja Tse tomorrow. We will fall into our sleeping bags early so as to get some sleep before engaging in the busy night.
Well, it is midnight today, and people will wake up and go Island Peak Climbing around Chhukung. The rucksack and other gear were already packed last night so we will dress up and go out to the food tent to take little food and hot beverage.
At one thirty we started off to commence our up Istill ladderical entrance on to the mountain. We are going to illuminate the climbing route using our headlamps. The route is in the westward direction and starts to ascend steeply with an elevation of about 800 m over the rocky terrain.
Then the trail heads across the soft sandy surface till it comes to the Advance Camp. Then, the trail turns into icy rocky land that needs to be ascended in the amount of three hours.
Once we reach the glacier we will don our climbing equipment and get a little extra energy prior to reaching the rope layer on the glacier. We shall need also, under conditions, to cross crevasses by ladder, and in a few places the ice ax will prove very convenient.
Upon getting at the bottom of headwall of Island peak, we go through the fixed ropes, and gradually we attempt to reach the top. The final 200 meters by altitude are exhausting with a slope of 45 degrees which possibly might need the use of jumar.
Our reward comes in all the hard work we have contributed when we finally make it to the top, and we get to witness a dazzling 360 degree panorama of mount Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Baruntse, Makalu, Lhotse, Cholatse, Thamserku, among many more.
Once photos are taken we will descend again to base camp, where we will eat and fast track back to Chhukung.
We also operate private trips.
