Trip Overview

Out of all the Everest region treks in Nepal, Island Peak Climbing via Gokyo EBC Trek is one of the most beautiful treks. Being a reasonably challenging path, this trek offers one of the best scenery viewing adventures of the beautiful mountains, glacial lakes, and typical Sherpa villages, being challenging for trekkers and nature lovers.

Flying from Kathmandu to Lukla, which is located in the Everest region at 2,860 meters (9,383 feet), is the first step towards Island Peak Climbing via Gokyo EBC Trek. The Island Peak Climbing via Gokyo EBC Trek departs Lukla and passes through lovely Sherpa villages and healthy forests. Other exhilarating features are the suspension bridges that span Namche Bazaar and the Dudh Koshi River.

From Namche Bazaar, the Gokyo lakes trail leads to breathtaking views with moderate challenge. The blue lakes and glaciers in Gokyo Valley are the main reason why it is a mystery to all hikers. Among these lakes, Gokyo Lake is the most well-known. The effect is soul-stirring because these lakes are so serene and lovely in the midst of the Himalayan landscape.

The greatest attraction in Gokyo Valley is climbing up to Gokyo Ri, which is a view point 5357 meters (17575 feet) above sea level. The exciting part of climbing up to Gokyo Ri has a great view of several mountains, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, among the rest.

Continuing along the Gokyo Valley, the trek raises the stakes, with a crossing of the Chola Pass. As it stands at an altitude of 5,420 m (17,782 feet), the pass requires some good stamina. As you make your way up the trail, it gets much more challenging, but the view at the top will be all worth it.

After crossing the Chola Pass, you’ll descend to Chhukung, a small, colorful village where Island Peak base camp is based. Upon your arrival here, you’ll get to enjoy the stunning, breathtaking landscape of the mountains, which includes Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and especially Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world.

As you complete your trek to Island Peak, the trekking trail joins the usual route of the EBC. Lobuche and Gorak Shep are just a few of the small villages that you will need to go through before you actually arrive at the base of Mount Everest. If you are at Mount Everest’s base, you will pull back in awe of the mountain as well as of the survivors of the ordeal.

For another slightly different perspective on the Himalayas and Everest itself, you can wake up very early one morning and trek a few hours to the famous viewpoint of Kala Patthar at 5,545 meters (18,192 ft). From there, you get to view the beautiful mountains of Everest and numerous other mountains, which are beautiful to look at.

Thus, Island Peak Climbing via Gokyo EBC Trek is truly an experience of a lifetime. It is a mix of majestic nature, cultural experience, and active adventure. The trekking trail from Gokyo to Gokyo Ri and finally to the base camp of the world’s highest mountain is out of the world. Prepare for a thrilling tour of the region of Everest—this will be the holiday of a lifetime and will be closely connected with the massive mountains.

Island Peak Climbing via Gokyo EBC Trek Itinerary

01

We will take an early morning flight from TIA to Lukla to experience an unforgettable and exciting flight. At the renowned Tenzing-Hillary airport, we are welcomed by the stunning panorama of Mount Kongde Ri (6187 m).

After breakfast and handing over our bags to our local team, we set out on a three-hour hike to the stunning, picturesque village of Phakding.

We will walk through the busy stony street of Lukla town and trek on the Dudh Koshi River. In the final village of Lukla, permits for Sagarmatha National Park and Khumbu rural municipality will be arranged by our guide for Island Peak Climbing via Gokyo EBC Trek.

The path from here on will be a smooth downhill walk, so let’s have a comfortable start to our hike. Treking via Chheplung and Chaurikharka rural villages, we come to Thadokoshi, which greets us with the stunning view of Mount Kusum Kangaru (6367m).

A steep descent down below the giant boulders will lead us to Ghat, from which we have the breathtaking view of Mount Khumbila (5761 m). We trek on the east bank of the river to arrive at Phakding.

Point to Remember

During the spring and autumn treking season, peak time, flights from TIA to Lukla are diverted. The drive from Kathmandu to the high-altitude airport takes about four hours. To get to Ramechhap, you can drive your own car.

Note: Flights are scheduled to be varied depending on the number of passengers as they are operated by the airlines themselves.

Helicopter Option

Island Peak Climbing via Gokyo EBC Trek 19 days. If you want a luxury, faster service, we can arrange the service of direct helicopter transfer from Kathmandu to Lukla for an additional USD 500-600 per head on a rough estimate of five heads. How do you not miss the 4–5 hour car journey to Manthali from Kathmandu, and the loss of a good night’s sleep, in the peak trekking months, March–May and October–November?

Trek preparation to Phakding

Trek Planning and the Journey to Phakding
Pack and prepare all of your hiking equipment the day before your flight. Get to Tenzing Hillary Airport in Lukla early in the morning and eat a healthy breakfast. At Lukla, you will be met by porters who will carry your equipment, one porter for every two hikers.

The trip starts with a leisurely stroll from Lukla to Phakding. The route changes to a gentle slope at the bank of the Dudh Koshi River, and you cross Chheplung to get to the Everest base camp route. A little further on, you will pass the tiny village of Ghat before arriving in Phakding and preparing for your trip to Namche Bazar the following day.

Your body will be able to restore some of its energy with one more day to acclimate. We will move closer to Dole Village, our destination for the day, with the renewed energy. To reach Sanesa village, we will follow the same route as the Everest Base Camp trek. Then, completely departing from the main EBC route, we will travel via Mongla Danda to Phortse Thanga village.

The trek to Dole Village, and the Island Peak Climbing via Gokyo EBC Trek will be extremely difficult because we will be traversing a lot of uphill and downhill roads. We will also go around the holy mountain of Khumbila. Although the high-altitude trekking will be taxing on your body, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains and valleys when you reach Dole Village.

Please keep in mind that you will notice a severe lack of contemporary convenience at this stage of your hike. Although we’ll make sure your lodging has basic amenities, we can’t promise you all the services you desire. You should be aware that many facilities and services are unable to be provided here due to the area’s inaccessibility.

Given the altitude, any long trek can be very difficult. Additionally, navigating the upcoming trails is challenging. Thus, our destination for today will be Machhermo, which is only a few hours away from Dole.

Although the journey to Machhermo is brief, it will primarily be uphill. This makes the hike to Gokyo Lakes much more difficult. Even if you want to continue, the next stop is well out of our comfort zone.

Machhermo is a small village, just like Dole. The next few days will be spent acclimating to this village. We can also climb a little higher for acclimatization before returning to the village for the night.

The trek’s destination and main focus is the Gokyo Valley, as the name suggests. And the Gokyo Valley is where we’re going today.

It may be difficult to sleep here in the cold evenings, but you will have to rise early. Our planned breakfast and lunch will give us the energy we desperately need for the last stages of our island peak climbing via Gokyo EBC Trek. As you get closer to your goal, you’ll also feel more energized.

We will be in awe of the scenery when we arrive in Gokyo Valley. Looking down the valley, you will be greeted by the three ice lakes. We will also see that the valley is dotted with many small villages. Green grasslands engulf villages and lakes (except in winter). We will be lodging in a village close to the lakes.

There are plenty of things to do in Gokyo Valley. You can choose to explore the valley’s various areas and the shores of the three lakes if you’re a nature lover. You can also choose to circle various lakes that are hidden in other areas of the valley if the stunning beauty of the surrounding mountains gives you enough energy.

Along the Everest Base Camp trail, the relatively short but picturesque trek from Dzongla to Lobuche is worth taking. This section provides a more leisurely pace after the strenuous Cho La Pass and offers breathtaking views of Ama Dablam, Nuptse, and the Khumbu Glacier. Hiking through alpine terrain and passing memorials to climbers who died on Everest is a moving and reflective highlight of the trip. Arriving at Lobuche (4,910m) prepares the climber for the next visit to Everest Base Camp and acclimatization prior to the push for the Island Peak summit.

We will set out early morning from Lobuche and trek over the moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. The strenuous climb will be eased by the scenic views of Everest’s north face, Pumori, Mahalangur, Lingtren, Khumbutse, Nuptse, and numerous others before the ascent to Goraksherp.

The trail then ascends for sometime taking us to the Thangma Riju or the Lobuche Pass giving us a 360-degree panorama of high snow-covered peaks.

We will now climb a challenging hill above the Changri glacier, where we will first see the renowned Kala Patthar sleeping at the foot of the magnificent Pumori peak.

The last village on the Everest Base Camp trekking route, Gorakshep, will be our next stop. We will drop off our backpacks and proceed to Everest Base Camp following a hearty lunch break at the lodge.

Along the way, we will ascend glacial rivers and snowy trails to rise up onto the ridge which will carry us to the mythical base camp. Do not expect to view Everest here. Instead, take in the breathtaking view of the Khumbu region, Nuptse, Lhotse, Khumbutse, and Pumori, as well as the magnificent Khumbu glacier and icefall.

We’ll head back to our accommodations in Gorakshep after taking in the scenery and catching up with the campers.

We are preparing to reach Island Peak, our next major objective on the journey. We will stroll leisurely in the direction of Chhukung, the final settlement before the mountain. As we continue east along the stream, we will encounter the glacier moraines of Imja and Lhotse.

After roughly two hours, we will arrive in Chhukung Village, where we will share a room and eat lunch against the perplexing backdrop of Island Peak and Ama Dablam.

After we’ve rested and recovered, we can hike up to Chhukung Ri, which is 5546 meters above sea level. With breathtaking views of Makalu, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and Island Peak, the ascent should take three to four hours.

We are moving steadily toward Base Camp, almost facing Island Peak. We’ll turn south and climb the rocky path toward the east. Our lunch will be prepared by the base camp cook, and we will all share tents. We will be getting up at midnight! The rucksack and gear were ready the night before, so we will get dressed up and proceed to the food tent to have a light meal and hot drink.

We will be departing at 01:30 and we will walk up the hill calmly. The headlamps will illuminate the path in front of us. The path is in a westerly direction and steeply rises for around 800 meters across the rocky ground.

The journey then crosses the soft sandy ground for a short while before it reaches the Advance Camp. The journey now becomes icy and rocky ground, which takes a three-hour ascend.

The moment we get to the glacier, we will put on our climbing gear and gain some extra energy for the last part of the climb before entering the rope layer across the glacier. We also have to cross ladders over crevasses, depending on conditions, and in some sections, the ice ax will be very handy.

Once we reach the foot of the Island Peak headwall, we will descend through the fixed ropes, and we inch-by-inch force our way to the summit. The last 200 meters in elevation are tiring with a 45-degree slope which may necessitate the use of jumar.

We are rewarded for all our efforts on reaching the top, and are blessed to view the breathtaking 360-degree view of Everest, Ama Dablam, Baruntse, Pumori, Makalu, Lhotse, Cholatse, Thamserku, and countless others.

We will get stronger as we make our way back down into the Imja Khola Valley, even though we are exhausted. Until we reach Pangboche, we will continue through the villages of Dingboche and Shomare. At this stage, the presence of pine, fir, and deciduous trees causes the landscape to progressively return to its original green state.

We will proceed in the direction of Debuche by crossing the Imja Khola (River) over a small steel bridge. In order to shorten our walk the next day, we can spend the night here and, if we have the energy, continue on toward Tengboche.

We march to Tengboche Gompa, passing through rhododendron and conifer trees. After that, we will spend the night in one of the lodges in the village.

Trip Information of Island Peak Climbing via Gokyo EBC Trek

Difficulty Trip For Island Peak Climbing via Gokyo EBC Trek

The Island Peak Climbing via Gokyo EBC Trek would be best classified as moderate and in part dependent on the prior experience and strength level of the trekker. Still, it is one of Nepal’s most sacred trekking destinations, with its charming mountains, alternating views, and ethnic culture.

Being a trek that is normally graded as moderate, especially for first-timers, there are still some forms of challenge that accompany it. Hiking Gokyo is exciting and fun, though below are some of the challenges facing hikers on the Island Peak Climbing via the Gokyo EBC Trek.
Altitude

Challenging hardness due to heights and inclines ranks among the top of those which have to be taken into account. Mountaineers are likely to develop altitude sickness, and therefore, caution should be exercised if mountaineers must ascend the Gokyo Chola, which is at 5367 meters‘ altitude. Such complications as poor appetite, headache, weakness, and dizziness may occur.

Island Peak Climbing via Gokyo EBC Trek-Ideal season during these months

Best time to embark on Island Peak Climbing via Gokyo EBC trek is during spring and autumn months, i.e., March to May and September to November, respectively. The seasons offer the most ideal climatic conditions to climb and trek in the Khumbu area, i.e., clear sky, comfortable temperatures, and minimum chance of rain or snow.

The weather is typically mild in the spring, with warm days and cool nights. The weather is clear, and the Himalayas look beautiful. The daytime temperature varies between 10 to 15°C in lower elevations and 0 to 5°C in higher areas. The spring season also happens to be the flowering season for rhododendrons, which brings an added beauty to the trek.

In autumn, the weather is usually dry and settled with clear blue skies and excellent visibility. The weather is moderate as well, with sunny warm days and cool nights. Daytime temperature ranges from 15 to 20°C in lower elevations and 5 to 10°C in higher elevations. Autumn is also the season when the skies are at their clearest, giving an excellent view of the Himalayas.

But one should also remember that weather is unpredictable in the Himalayas, and unexpected rain, snow, or a storm can appear even on the best of days. It is always wise to search for the weather forecast prior to embarking on the trek and make preparations accordingly.

Weather Condition

Trekking may be impacted by the unpredictable weather in Gokyo Chola Pass EBC. The best seasons are spring and fall because of the clear sky, stable weather, trekking conditions, and the mountains’ visibility in mild temperatures.
Even these months, though, are frequently subject to weather variations. Strong winds, rain, snow, or fog can change the trail’s visibility. As a result, you should always wear protective apparel, such as windproof jackets and waterproof clothing.

Accommodation, meals, and drinks

During the climb of Island Peak via Gokyo EBC trek, one can be accommodated in lodges or tea houses, depending on the trek. For instance, there are some tea houses where beds and pillows are provided. Blankets will probably be made available; however, it is advisable that you bring along a sleeping bag for additional warmth, especially in winter. Toiletries can be shared; the lodges are very simple. There are a few teahouses with en-suite rooms, but it is extremely rare.

Along the EBC trekking route, there is an abundance of food in the tea houses and small hotels. As for choice, tea house menus are quite varied; one can thus sample Nepali, Indian, Tibetan, and Western dishes.

They may consist of Dal Bhat, i.e., rice and lentil soup respectively; momos, i.e., dumplings; noodles, fried or boiled; and soups and curries.

In Island Peak base camp, there will be unlimited hygienic meals with tea/coffee, boiled water provided by our team. And Twin sharing tent, dining, kitchen, and local toilet.

Permits

Permits for trekking to Island Peak and Gokyo Chola Pass. The following permits are needed for the Island Peak Climbing via Gokyo EBC Trek.
Permit for Khumbu Rural Municipality
Permit to Enter Sagarmatha National Park

Altitude sickness

Acute mountain sickness (AMS), another name for high altitude sickness, can occur when you climb high mountains. It’s critical to recognize the symptoms and take preventative measures. Getting used to the height is a crucial step in preventing high-altitude sickness. Take your time trekking and allow your body to get used to it. Staying in locations that aren’t too high for a few days is a smart idea. In this way, your body can adapt to the height.

Transportation for Island Peak Climbing via Gokyo EBC Trek

This covers transportation to and from the airport, as well as to and from the trek’s beginning and ending locations. Your Island Peak Climbing via Gokyo EBC trek package will include all of these transportation options.

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s a combination of the beautiful Gokyo Valley trek and Everest Base Camp trek with an alpine ascent of Island Peak (6,189m). It’s a challenging, high-altitude trekking expedition with stunning Himalayan views, cultural encounters, and technical mountaineering.

This is a moderate to difficult trek with a technical climbing section on Island Peak. Trekkers must be fit and have some high-altitude experience. Some mountaineering experience (e.g., cramponing and use of an ice axe) is helpful but can be taught by guides before the climb.

The whole itinerary usually takes 18 to 22 days, depending on acclimatization, weather, and route tailoring.

The best season to go is
Spring (March–May)
Autumn (September–November)
These are the best weather, best wide views of the mountains, and safest climbing times.

Yes. You will need:

  • Island Peak Climbing Permit
  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit
  • Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit

We arrange all the necessary permits for you.

Even though the trek itself is not a technical climb, Island Peak is actually a climbing peak with ropes, crampons, and basic alpine techniques. Experience is always best but many climbers do it as their first summit with instructor and guidance.

  • Kala Patthar Viewpoint: 5,545m (18,192 ft)
  • Island Peak Summit: 6,189m (20,305 ft)
  • Gokyo Ri 5,357 m.
  • Tea Houses in Villages along the trek (basic rooms, shared toilet)
  • Tent Camp at Island Peak Base Camp while climbing up

Yes. Proper acclimatization is necessary. The schedule includes rest days and a gradual ascent. Guides monitor closely and can assist if symptoms are observed.

You’ll require basic trekking gear in addition to:

  • Mountaineering boots
  • Climbing harness, crampons, helmet
  • Ice axe
  • Carabiners & ropes (usually provided by guides)

Your tour operator provides a comprehensive gear list, and the majority of technical gear can be rented in Kathmandu.

This trek and climb are secure for seasoned trekkers with a good guide, well-planned itinerary, and proper acclimatization. Always hire licensed and experienced guides or trekking agencies.

The climb is for beginners who are in good shape and have some trekking experience. However, Island Peak does require very little mountaineering experience. Most inexperienced climbers succeed with the right training.
