Trip Overview

As part of the GHT (Great Himalayan Trail), the Kanchenjunga Lumba Sumba Pass trek is truly a unique and extraordinary journey that spans 38 days taking you through an incredible variety of landscapes.

The Kanchenjunga Lumba Sumba Pass trek is arguably one of the most strenuous and tough trekking routes that was established by the TAAN (Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal) in 2012 under the leadership of Rana Bahadur Khadka. He was the first Vice President of TAAN who along with 20 other members explored the area and opened it to foreign trekkers.

Therefore, this Kanchenjunga Lumba Sumba Pass Trek is a relatively new and untouched destination for trekkers that is situated in the secluded Kanchenjunga Conservation Area and Makalu Barun National Reserve Area in eastern Nepal.

Since the Lumba Sumba Pass trek route joins the two Himalayan Giants of Kanchenjunga (8586 m) – the third tallest icy Peak of the planet and Makalu (8485 m) – the fifth tallest Peak of Earth, it is also named Kanchenjunga to Makalu Traverse Trek.

Kanchenjunga Lumba Sumba Pass Trek provides a passage from the Kanchenjunga region to Makalu Barun National Park through the 5159 m high Lumba Sumba Pass allowing us to step into both the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp and Makalu Base Camp.

The Kanchenjunga Lumba Sumba Pass Trek is walking through two of Nepal’s best-preserved conservation areas, we can observe various species of birds and animals including the two endangered species snow leopard and red panda.

Additionally, the Kanchenjunga round trek also offers us some of the most spectacular scenery of the Himalayas. The overwhelming mountain vistas of Jannu, Chamlang, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Kabru, Khambachen, Yalung Kang, Phole, and many others are the highlights of the trip.

The next highlight of the Lumba Sumba pass trek is setting foot at the expanse of Olangchun Gola enriched with numerous high-altitude lakes.
Along the way to Kanchenjunga Lumba Sumba Pass Trek, we will also come across fascinating villages home to various ethnic groups such as Limbu, Sherpa, Rai, Gurung, Magar, Newar, and Tamang.  Throughout the Kanchenjunga round trek, we will find ourselves deep in the wilderness, yet fully dedicated to the long hiking journey ahead.

So get ready for our Kanchenjunga Lumba Sumba Pass Trek that will transport you to the untouched wilds of Nepal, making you feel as if you have traveled back in time 50 or even 100 years ago.

How does our journey begin?

Our Kanchenjunga round with Lumba Sumba Pass trek begins from Kathmandu with a flight to Bhadrapur and drives through the charming towns of Phidim and Sekathum. The hiking journey then follows the quaint villages of Kanchenjunga region ultimately taking us to the Northern base camp of the Peak.

The next stage sees us stepping into the Makalu Barun National Park where we will walk through several isolated Kharkas finally leading us to the Lumbs Sumba Pass.

Then through the villages of Thudam, Hong Gaun, and Kalo Pokhari, we retrace our steps to Langmale Kharka from where we will march to Makalu Base Camp. After a short detour of Num, we return back to Kathmandu via Tumlingtar.

After some rest, we will then hop in our transport and drive towards Phidim along the Mechi Highway. Initially, the path runs through the hilly landscape of Illam known for its vast tea plantation. Then the asphalt road passes through the dense bamboo forest.

The road eventually rises to pass Nepalthok from where we cross three passes below 2500 m. The trail allows us to admire the Kanchenjunga and Jannu Himal.

We will then descend to Phidim-  the large local shopping town resting with the elegant backdrop of Kanchenjunga.

today The trail then takes us to the wooden bridge allowing us to cross the Tamur Khola from where we will advance towards Tiptala Bhanjyang. Walking forward, we will come to the entrance of Dingsamba Khola Valley. From here, we will continue above the ruins in an interlacing of mossy stones to almost come alongside the river.

We will then wind between imposing juniper trunks until crossing a kharka. Then, the chaotic path covered with thorn bushes will lead us via Langmale Kharka-  a meadow dominated by beautiful slender rocky needles.
Leaving the Langmale Kharka, we will continue with a steady climb in the middle of juniper bushes. Around 4000m, we will approach an area of collapsed black rocks, from here we will turn right and follow a contour path.

We will then cross a rocky cliff to discover the face of Jannu and the summit of Kabru. We will then arrive at Sanjung Kharka from where we will continue walking along the Dingsamba Khola River. Then crossing the river via a natural bridge of two large rocks, we will encounter the wide path through the middle of the rhododendron bushes.

We will then pass a meadow and reach Yangetar Kharka. From here, we will climb the moraine and come across a large flat area. Finally, we will arrive at the end of the glacial tongue of the Lumba Sumba summit where we will again put up our tent.

Today is a very important stage and the most demanding but most beautiful day of our Lumba Sumba Pass trek. Departing from the camp, we will cross the area of collapsed rocks and climb the many small ridges, walking up and down along the glacial rocky path bumping here and there the beautiful glacial lakes and streams for about 4 hours.

Eventually, a balcony path in a large scree will appear leading us to the Lumba Sumba Pass in around half an hour. At the Pass, we can see the garlands of lungtas (prayer flags) fluttering in the wind along with the astounding views of Kanchenjunga, Chamlang, Makalu, Baruntse, Khambachen, Hongku, Jannu, Kabru, and many more.

Depositing these moments in our memory, we will now head down to Lasa Kharka beside the Lapsi Khola on gentle slopes that are sometimes snow-covered.

Eventually, we will enter a forest of rhododendron bushes at the confluence of the Lapsi Khola with the Medok Chheje Khola. We will then hike down to cross the Medok Chheje Khola on two wooden bridges. Moving further, we will cross one more pasture and arrive at Samne Kharka.

The route next follows the Medok Chheje Khola offering the wonderful views of Mera Peak, and Chamlang. At first, we will descend gently through the pine trees followed by a steep descent on a stony path till we reach the Thudam Village-  a small village of Sherpas and Bhotiyas.

We will be losing approximately 900 m altitude today which means our trek today comprises lots of downhill walking. Therefore, we will leave the Thudam Village in the morning after breakfast and immediately begin a descent on the stony path. Moving through the pine forest, we will then cross two steep scree. The forward trail is dominated by the rocky hillside path, with bends here and there.

En route, the Makalu and Chamlang peaks will play hide and seek with us. Then the descent takes place steeply along the hillside through a narrow path leading us to Chimjung Khola on the Himaloso Danda. The up-and-down route continues in a charred forest.

Finally, we will make an arduous climb back into the forest towards a contour route in the middle of a bamboo forest which will lead us to Yak Kharka.

Trip Information of Kanchenjunga Lumba Sumba Pass Trek

Best Time to Kanchenjunga Lumba Sumba Pass Trek

The Lumba Sumba pass trek is most enjoyable during autumn months from September to November, and spring lasting from March to May. These seasons provide the perfect opportunity to spend several days in tents, allowing you to witness breathtaking mountain views and stunning landscapes.

However, it’s important to note that the winter months from December to February can be quite chilly, making tent stays more challenging. On the other hand, the summer months of June to August are accompanied by heavy rainfall, which can lead to landslides in the passes.

Elevation and Distance

The Lumba Sumba Pass Trek covers a total trekking distance of around 200 km. The adventurous journey begins with a flight to Bhadrapur from Kathmandu that covers a distance of 297 km within 45 minutes. The trek then commences from Sekathum, which is located 245 km away from Kathmandu.

The Lumba Sumba Pass is the highest elevation point of our 38-day Kanchenjunga Round with Lumba Sumba Pass Trek. The Lumba Sumba Pass stands at an elevation of 5159 m. During this incredible trek, the highest overnight stay will be at Makalu Base Camp, situated at an impressive altitude of 4870 m.

Maximum/Minimum walk per day

In our 38-day Kanchenjunga Round Trek, we will be hiking for 33 days, walking an average of 5 to 7 hours each day covering approximately 20 km daily.

The shortest walk will be on day 19, lasting 3 to 4 hours from Lasa Kharka to Thudam village. The longest walk will be on day 18, lasting 9 to 10 hours from High Camp to Lasa Kharka, crossing the challenging Lumba Sumba Pass.

Kanchenjunga Lumba Sumba Pass Trek Difficulty and Acclimatization

The Lumba Sumba Pass trek as part of the GHT is definitely one of the most challenging, especially when it comes to trekking. There are a number of Passes that we have to overcome during the journey but the major pass is of Lumba Sumba that erects at 5159 m.

The real challenge comes in traversing through dense forests, moss-covered rocks, and fallen tree trunks that block the way. Not to mention the routes along steep hillsides or vertical cliffs with nothing but emptiness on one side, or sandy slopes above rushing rivers.

It is a true wilderness experience that requires spending multiple days in camps. Therefore, this trip is definitely not for beginners.

Because of the potential risk of altitude sickness, we have planned three rest days in between the trekking days with one at Ghunsa on day 7, one at Olangchun Gola on day 15, and one at Chyamthang on day 22. As we approach the days to cross the Lumba Sumba, we have minimized our walking duration for the correct adaptation to the high-altitude air.

Preparation and training

This is no ordinary trek so a month-long training is obviously not enough. We suggest you prepare at least 6 months before your departure date. Since you will be walking long distances for many hours every day for several days in a row, you need long-term endurance which you can increase with jogging, hiking, mountain hiking, swimming, and climbing stairs.

You should definitely practice it 2-3 times a week for 30-60 minutes each. You can also train in the gym with a treadmill, cross trainer, or rowing machine.

Alternate routes

You have various choices when it comes to deciding how you want to trek to Lumba Sumba. Our Kanchenjunga Round with Lumba Sumba Pass Trek combines trekking to Kanchenjunga’s north base camp and Makalu Base camp, making it a 38-day adventure.

However, if you want a shorter option, you can complete the Lumba Sumba Pass trek within 20 days by skipping the base camps. In this case, you will approach the Lumba Sumba Pass from Ila Danda, trekking via Cheruwa and Lelep.

Altitude sickness

It’s normal to experience mild altitude sickness symptoms when undertaking a 38-day trek to the remote wilderness of Kanchenjunga, Lumba Sumba Pass, and Makalu Barun Reserve.

Headaches, nausea, fatigue, drowsiness, loss of appetite, and trouble sleeping can affect even the fittest individuals during this journey. If you do feel unwell, don’t hesitate to take Diamox for quick relief.

Make sure to inform our guide if the symptoms persist so that he can assess the situation and adjust the trek accordingly. In case of an emergency, we can also arrange for helicopter rescue services.

Transportation, Accommodation, Meals and Drink

We will provide private transportation for airport transfers and tours in Kathmandu. We will arrange internal flights from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur and Tumlingtar to Kathmandu for you. Private jeeps or other vehicles will be used for travel from Phidim to Sekathum and from Num to Tumlingtar.

You will be staying in a 3-star hotel in Kathmandu and the best available lodge during the trek. Tents and kitchen equipment will be provided during camping.

Enjoy breakfast in Kathmandu and a farewell dinner at the end of the trip. Meals during the trek include breakfast, lunch, and dinner with tea or coffee, as well as fresh fruits after dinner. Unlimited food and hot boiled water will be available during camping.

Communication, Gadgets charging, and Internet/wifi

You can expect good reception of NTC and NCELL mobile networks in the villages of Kanchenjunga and Makalu region. Lodges along the trekking route offer charging options for your devices and the opportunity to access WIFI services for an additional cost.

However, keep in mind that as you move further into the wilderness, these conveniences may not be available. We suggest you take advantage of this trek as a chance to disconnect from the online world and fully appreciate the tranquility of nature.

Permits of Kanchenjunga Lumba Sumba Pass Trek

We need a Kanchenjunga Special Permit, a Kanchenjunga Conservation Area (KCA) Entry Permit, a Makalu Barun National Park Entrance Permit, and a Restricted Area Permit for Sankhuawasabha District for the Kanchenjunga Round with Lumba Sumba Pass Trek. All these permits are already included in our trek package.
