If you are hopelessly in love with the mountains of Nepal, then Larke Peak Climbing should be on your wish list. The Larke Peak climbing offers all the conditions to feel like a real climber: snow and ice, technical challenges, the possibility of using the climbing gears, the ability to move in a team, fight possible wind, and other manifestations of the harsh climate at altitude.
The Larke Peak Perched in the Manaslu Conservation Area of the Gorkha District of Nepal, the Larke Peak also spelled as Larkya Peak has two summits: Sano Larkya Peak at 5807 meters and the true summit of Thulo Larkya Peak at 6249 m. we will be climbing the main summit of the Larke Peak.
The Larke peak climbing began only in 2002. The first fortunate climbers to conquer the Peak were Archil Badriashvili, Giorgi Tepnadze,
Bakar Gelashvili, who accomplished the task on 27 Sep 2017 A.D. We will be following in the footsteps of these great conquerors and history-makers to reach the top of the Peak.
What makes the Larke Peak climbing much favorable among mountain lovers is the opportunity to combine climbing, and trekking options with the study of the Nepalese-Tibetan Buddhist culture and cuisine with the exploration of the ancient monasteries in different Gurung and Sherpa villages.
Larke Peak is a huge bonus of the unimaginable spectacular panorama of Manaslu, Annapurna IV, Annapurna II, Kang Guru, Himlung, Ratna Chuli, Gyajing Khang, Cheo, Buddha Himal, and Himal Chuli from its tip, along with a chance to set foot in the restricted zone of Manaslu Conservation Area and the rare probability of spotting the wild flora and fauna of the reserve including snow leopard, musk deer, brown bear, lynx, red fox, blue sheep, Himalayan Serow and Tahr.
From a technical point of view, Larke Peak is a technically challenging peak and is categorized as a group A expedition by the Nepal Mountaineering Association. Therefore, each participant should have experience of previous mountain ascents to peaks of 5000 meters and above.
All in all, the Larke Peak climbing will be an excellent experience both for those who dream of climbing the famous Himalayas as well as for experienced travelers, connoisseurs of mountain nature, and everyone who wants to get acquainted with Nepali flavor and heights!
The commencement of our Larke Peak climbing sets off with a drive from Kathmandu to Machhakhola. From here, our trekking days begin in some beautiful Gurung villages of Jagat, Deng, Namrung, Lho, Sama Gaun, and Dharma Shala.
From Dharma Shala, our ascension route begins at Larke Peak base camp and High Camp. The assault of the peak begins the next day followed by the descent to Bimthang, Dharapani, and drive to Kathmandu.
Welcome to the capital of Nepal- Kathmandu. Your Nepal adventure begins from today and we are delighted to be your partner in Nepal. Our correspondent will meet you at the Airport and drive you to your hotel in the city center.
After some rest, you can take a first stroll through the city. Enjoy the first taste of the lively dishes and atmosphere of Nepal.
After your breakfast in the morning, our tour guide will meet you at the hotel and introduce each group member. Then he will discuss the Larke Peak climbing program. If you have any questions, please ask our guide. He will also collect your documents to obtain the required permits in advance for Larke Peak climbing.
Now, it’s time to explore the architectural landmarks of Kathmandu including Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, and Durbar Square.
After we return to our hotel, our guide will check all your equipment. If anything is missing, you can rent or purchase it from Thamel Market. Please go to bed early as we have a long drive awaiting us the next day.
Early in the morning after having breakfast, we will leave the capital, and drive along the asphalted road of Prithvi Highway located in the Dhading Besi following the mighty Trishuli River.
Now partly on gravel roads, the road winds through numerous villages and fields to Arughat Bazaar (530 m). On the way, we can catch a glimpse of the Ganesh Himal and Shringi Himal. We will drive further to Soti Khola along the Budhi Gandaki River. The road from here is quite bumpy but safe and manageable.
Before reaching Machcha Khola, we will pass the small settlements of Khursasne and Labubesi.
After breakfast, our trekking journey begins to Jagat. We will be constantly following the up-and-down path today. We will walk through the deep forest of rhododendrons, tropical trees, and pine along the Budhi Gandaki River with the constant company of Ganesh Himal. If we are lucky, we may see the langur jumping from one tree to another.
Walking along, we will pass the Tatopani settlement famous for its thermal spring. Here, we can stop for lunch, then we will continue hiking toward Dobhan, Thulo Dhunga, and Yaruphant.
In the narrow gorge of Budhi Gandaki, the path partly leads along above the roaring water, before the valley suddenly opens up again and becomes wider. Finally, we will reach our destination for the day, Jagat.
Leaving Jagat, we will hike uphill till er reach the Salleri Village, then we hike down to Sirdibas and trek towards Philim. We will encounter our first Mani walls and chortens along the way with the settlement of the Gurung tribe. Shortly we will cross the suspension bridge over the Budhi Gandaki River and reach Philim. The gorge now becomes narrower as we pass the Lokwa and reach Ekle Bhatti. Here we will have our lunch with a view of the real Himalayan giant of Shringi Himal (6,251 m).
Resuming our walk after lunch, we will walk along the path that leads over a steep step through beautiful, rustic coniferous forests and partly dense bamboo forests. In Nyak Phedi the path splits – on the right it goes along the Syar Khola River into the Tsum Valley.
We will continue on the Manaslu circuit on the left. Finally, we will reach the small town of Deng, where the Lapuchun Himal (5,996 m) and Lapyang (5,968 m) mountains reside in the background.
After breakfast, we will begin our hike towards the Sherpa village of Namrung. The vegetation from today will slowly transform as the deciduous forest gives way to conifers. The initial walk will be uphill till we reach Bihi Phedi via Rana Bridge.
A few up and down will now lead us to Ghap village where we will have our lunch. Further, the trail will take us to Pro village from where we will cross the narrow gorge along the forest and flower meadows and arrive at Namrung.
We will leave Namlung after breakfast and climb up to Barsam and then Lhi villages. In Lhi, we can explore the really beautiful and impressive monastery. The impressive mountain of Saula at 6235 m, Naike Peak at 6211 m, and the great Manaslu at 8163 m will rise before our eyes. In clear weather, we can also see the majestic Himal Chuli (7,893 m) and Ngadi Chuli (7,871 m).
After crossing a small stream, we will reach Lho via Sho village. For better acclimatization, we will spend the night in Lho. Some may even trek further to reach Sama Gaun on the same day.
We have a very easy and short walk today with an altitude gain of around 400 m. we will therefore wake up late and enjoy our breakfast in the company of icy giants. Then we will trek towards the Syala village which will directly take us to Sama Gaun where we will be in like an amphitheater surrounded by the tall ice giants.
If you like, you can ascend for about three hours to the Pungyen Monastery located above the huge valley of the same name. After exploring the monastery, you can climb down to Sama Gaun for your overnight stay.
Today is dedicated to our acclimatization at the altitude of above 3500 m. if you have already visited the Pungyen Monastery the day before, then we can go to Birendra Tal or Manaslu Base Camp.
Hiking to Lake Birendra is not that difficult and tiring as it stands at an elevation of 3460 m. In about 30 minutes, we will be walking along the bank of the lake enjoying the grand view of Manaslu.
After spending some time at the lake, we can then climb along the glacial path that will lead us to Manaslu Base Camp at 4800 m. The lovely loneliness, the grandest Manaslu will not let us return. But we have to and we will return to our lodge at Sama Gaun for a nice hot dinner and a warm bed.
Today also we have a relatively easy trek along the gentle slope through a wide high valley and only slightly uphill that will lead us to Kermo Kharka. We will move on to cross the bridge over the Budhi Gandaki River and arrive at White Kani. A short hike from here and we will finally arrive at Samdo.
Along the route, you can have the magnificent mountain views of Samdo Peak (5177 m), Rani Himal (6240 m), Ngadi Chuli, and Manaslu.
After checking in at the lodge, we will have a free day to stroll through this almost medieval-looking place and visit the small gompa (monastery).
After breakfast. We will continue with our journey to reach Dharma Shala also known as Refugee Camp or Larkye Phedi located at the foot of the Larkya La Pass. Walking along the high alpine meadows, we will climb down to cross a bridge over Gyala Khola.
Then we will climb uphill watching the mighty Naike massif on our left and traverse the Syache glacier. Enjoy the view of the western face of Manaslu Himal and the massive Larkye glacier. Now, we will hike uphill along the bank of the Salka Khola till we reach the small stone guest house of Dharma Shala.
Early in the morning after breakfast, we will set to hike over the glacial terrain along the lateral moraine next to the mighty Larkya glacier for about 3 to 4 hours towards the Larkya La pass. Finally, we will arrive at the Larke Peak Base Camp. Our crew members will then work on setting up the individual camps for cooking, sleeping, and latrines.
In the afternoon, our climbing guide will give us a brief training on using crampons, ice axes, and walking up and down along the rope. We will then rest, and gather the strength needed to summit the Peak.
Enjoy the beautiful morning breakfast with the incredible views of Manaslu Himal and Larke Peak. After breakfast, we will then pack our backpacks and set out for a gradual climb along the glacial path till we reach the High Camp at 5650 m.
Once again, our crew members will set the tents for our overnight stay, rest, and dinner. Meantime, we will once more practice using our climbing gears as the big day of conquering Larke Peak is just a night away.
Finally, the big day has arrived we all are waiting for. In the light of our headlamps, we will move on to climb the summit. Thanks to the excellent altitude acclimatization of the last few days, the ascent will be quite smooth.
First, we will climb the fairly steep moraine terrain, then the trail will lead increasingly over large stone slabs and later over loose scree (which can be covered with snow in spring). then, we will overcome a snow gully up to the highest point till we reach the summit. Depending on the conditions, we may have to use crampons and a harness.
Enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of the icy world of Manaslu, Annapurna IV, Annapurna II, Kang Guru, Himlung, Ratna Chuli, Gyajing Khang, Cheo, Buddha Himal, and Himal Chuli.
Embrace the pride, the joy, and the emotion at the top of the summit. Now, we will descend to our High Cam for a well-deserved hot meal and rest. We still have a long way to go to reach Bimthang which will be our overnight destination for today. We will also have to cross the mighty Larkya La Pass before we reach Bimthang.
From the high camp, it takes around 2 hours to reach the Larkya La Pass. The pass is decorated with many prayer flags, which, together with the mighty mountain panorama, make for a great photo opportunity. If the weather is clear, we can have magnificent views of Larkya Peak, Cheo Himal, Himlung Himal, and Nemjung Himal. Other lesser-known peaks will also be in front of such as Kang Guru, Chombi, Kechakyu, and Gyaji Kang.
From the Pass, we will climb down quite steeply into the Dudh Khola valley to reach the beautifully situated village of Bimthang. Once you arrive in Bimthang, Manaslu is again in front of you, only from the south side, in a wonderful green, lush plain along with Thulagi (7,059 m) and Phungi (6,538 m).
Unfortunately, it is now time to say goodbye to the high mountains but the wonderful hike awaits us today. Leaving Bimthang, we will climb down towards Sangure Kharka and cross the bridge over Dudh Khola.
Then we hike down through a wonderful, fairy tale coniferous forest and past many rhododendron bushes to reach Tilije Village of Gurung ethnic group. The landscape from here transforms into a deep forest and green vegetation once again. More and more human settlements will emerge and cultivated fields will appear.
We will then cross the Syanje village and reach Dharapani where we will settle for the night.
Time to head back to Kathmandu today. We will drive in a jeep along the bumpy road to reach Besisahar. Here we will stop for lunch and purchase some snacks for the road. Continuing from here, we will resume our road trip till we reach Kathmandu. We will then transfer you to your hotel, please rest and enjoy the comfortable setting with a hot shower and WIFI.
You will have a free day today to enjoy and tour around the Kathmandu street. You can shop around in Thamel, or explore the important sites of the city.
In the evening, we will enjoy a farewell dinner with a Nepali meal and a cultural program show.
We also operate private trips.
The most favorable climbing period for Larke Peak is autumn from September to November and spring from March to May. The autumn days are quite spectacular with a cooling breeze, clear visibility, and passage. The early days of spring still feature the accumulation of snow along the route.
The winter ascension (December-February) of the Larke Peak should be attempted by experienced climbers only. The ascension route leading to the Peak through two base camps will be blanketed with thick snow needing great skill for the usage of climbing gears. The avalanche, high-speed wind, and unpredictable weather conditions can often be the cause for obstruction of the trail towards the Larkya La Pass.
The Larke Peak climbing begins from Machha Khola at an elevation of 850 m and ends as we conquer the Peak itself at 6249 m. Macchakhola lies approximately 140 km away from Kathmandu which leads us to the Manaslu Conservation Area before we assault the Peak.
The Larke Peak trip is highest elevation for us to spend the night is at High Camp at 5650 m above sea level. An average of 15 km and 6 to 7 hours of walking is required every day during the trek. The total duration of the walk is 12 days.
The Larke Peak climbing is no easy task that requires technical skill, the use of climbing gears, and hiking along the rocky and glacial terrain overcoming the strenuous slopes at some point. The total journey requires us to walk for 12 days with the duration ranging from 6 to 7 hours every day on average.
We have planned our Larke Peak program to facilitate the abundant time for proper acclimatization in high altitudes. As our day progresses and approaches the peak, we will be hiking for minimum hours from 3 to 5 every day. The shorter walking duration begins from day 7 to day 13 as we traverse to Lho, Saa Gaun, Samdo, Dharma Shala, and two base camps.
Day 14 Larke Peak will present the toughest change as we set in to conquer the peak and descend to Bimthang requiring us to walk for 8 to 9 hours.
Graded as a Group A expedition by the Nepal Mountaineering Association, the Larke Peak climbing is a moderately difficult trekking and climbing journey in the remote setting of the Manaslu region in Nepal. Many climbers climb this mountain as training and acclimatization before more serious high-altitude climbs.
The Larke Peak involves serious physical exertion and the use of climbing equipment. Experience with climbing equipment is required. It is recommended to take a training course in Mountaineering Techniques before your trip.
Our Larke Peak Climbing program is specifically designed to allow plenty of time for proper acclimatization with a rest day in Sama Gaun, followed by minimum walking hours and overnight stays at high altitudes.
In addition Larke Peak, we will be accompanied by a professional climbing guide, and team guaranteeing the highest possible level of our safety, which is the most important part of our work.
The proper mountain climbing gear is necessary for a 100% successful and safe ascent of Larke Peak, which is 6200 m. The minimum gear required is comfort climbing boots, crampons, an ice axe, ropes, a harness set, which is properly checked the gear by an experienced climbing sherpa guide. While some gear can be rented in Kathmandu, if you missed something, it’s necessary to have personal gear that fits and is made to your specifications. If you’re not familiar with these devices, the use of an experienced guide is highly recommended to guide their proper application.
Being prepared and equipped for the ascent is most important in confronting Larke Peak’s challenge. If you’d like further information on any of these pieces of equipment or need advice on your preparations, please feel free to ask.
No, we don’t advise new trekkers and climbers to attempt the Larke peak climbing without any experience. Although the ascension route is considered safe and technically easy, Larke Peak doesn’t forgive mistakes, and even the most experienced climbers have sometimes failed.
We recommend planning your ascent to Larke Peak at least after Mera Peak, or Sano Larke Peak.
Physical training in mountaineering is one of the main components of a successful climb. Therefore, you should regularly be involved in practicing aerobic or cardio exercises that when done regularly can increase your physical strength, stamina, and endurance.
Aerobic exercises include: running, brisk walking, swimming, climbing stairs, cycling, and trail running. Naturally, the most accessible and widespread is running.
Please focus on continuously increasing the intensity of your training, without focusing on your usual or achieved level. Larke Peak will strengthen your core and prepare you for possible unforeseen physical difficulties on the route.
In addition Larke Peak, you should also learn basic techniques for working with rope and working with crampons, harnesses, and ice axes with our team in rest day our before start climbing.
As an alternate ascension route to Larke Peak, instead of hiking along the crowded and commonly used trail, you can use the trail that will lead you to Baseri instead of Machha Khola. From Baseri, you will then trek through unspoiled authentic village settlements of Kashigaon, Kerauja, and Dovan. From Dovan, the trail will then join the current classic route leading you to Philim, Bihi Phedi, and Namrung.
The Larke Peak substitutive path is less spoiled where you can still enjoy some pristine nature. You will get to spend nights in the warm shelter of local homes, and directly observe their day-to-day life.
Along with the technical skill, and strenuous path, you will have to deal with altitude sickness during Larke Peak climbing. This condition occurs due to a lack of oxygen when climbing mountains. Most of us live at low altitudes relative to sea level. When rising to a height of more than 2 thousand meters, unpredictable processes can occur in the body.
Such as weakness, drowsiness, lack of appetite, flatulence, indigestion, headache localized in the temples, nosebleeds, blue lips, and fever.
There is no definite cure for altitude sickness, Diamox, and Ibuprofen can be used to relieve symptoms. Mild symptoms however do not require medication. The main thing is to monitor your water balance and constantly replenish it.
The best prevention of altitude sickness is a gradual and leisurely ascent. In addition, when climbing a mountain, it is important for you to focus on your physical capabilities.
To lessen your stress related to a tour in Nepal, we strive to take care of all your logistics needs including transportation, accommodation, meals, and drinks. We offer airport pick-up and drop-off services in a private vehicle on your first and last day in Kathmandu. On your second day, we provide a tour guide, and driver with a car to take you on a personal sightseeing tour of the capital.
As the trip starts, we will drive you to the starting point of the trek via a private jeep or bus (based on group size). We will provide the same service at the completion of the trip.
You will start your day with a delicious breakfast every morning in Kathmandu. For lunch and dinner, there are numerous options in the city. During the trek, you will have your breakfast, lunch, and dinner with tea in the mountain lodge along the route. Fresh fruits will be provided after dinner.
When camping, our kitchen crew will prepare fresh meals and you will have the provision of unlimited foods, tea/ coffee, and hot water.
NCEL and NTC SIM cards can be used for mobile communications during the trip but with an increase in altitude, the mobile reception can be sporadic. You can use the 4G service for the mobile internet when available.
As for WIFI, the accommodating lodges in Namrung, Lho, Samagaon, Samdo, Bhimthang, and Dharapani provide reliable WIFI connections at extra cost. Further, the service may not be available.
You can also charge your devices and gadgets at your accommodating tea house or lodge. We recommend taking a power bank or solar panels with you for charging at base camps.
Please do not be distressed about obtaining the permits for Larke Peak climbing. Our team will process the permits on your account and the service cost is included in our tour cost. For the Larke Peak climbing, a Manaslu Conservation Area Project Permit, Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS) card, Annapurna Conservation Area Permit, and Larke Peak climbing permit from the Nepal Mountaineering Association will be needed.
When preparing for your trek, you’ll be responsible for carrying your personal gear, while sharing some of the bulkier items with fellow trekkers. Keeping your pack light is essential, so opt for lightweight, high-quality clothing and gear. Be sure to pack versatile clothing suitable for a range of conditions, as the weather can change unexpectedly. We recommend a layered system—three layers will have you cozy for varying temperatures. Don’t wear cotton or such material that releases its warmth in cold weather. Wear robust wool or other perspiration-wicking material that offers breathability and avoids sweat accumulation, offering you a more enjoyable stroll.
To enhance your experience further, we provide complimentary water and a windproof duffle bag for your personal equipment, which will be transported by our porters while on the trek. The duffle is yours to keep after the trek. You can leave your excess baggage, as well as any non-trekking items, at our Kathmandu office, where you can collect them safely when you return.
In addition, Hill Sherpa Trekking & Expedition will also provide all your required equipment along for your journey, including base camp campsites, bedroom furniture, rope climbing, ice screws, snow bars, and ice hammers.
(Note: first aid kits & medicine will carrying with our company’s guide during the trekking However, we recommend you to bring your personal first-aid kit)
