Mera Peak With Mingbo La Pass is a true taste of Himalayan expeditions, accessible without technical difficulties, even for intermediate trekkers and well-prepared high mountain hikers. Situated in the Khumbu region of Nepal next to Island Peak, Mera Peak is the tallest trekking peak at an elevation of 6476 m above sea level.
From the summit, you can be amazed by the beautiful creation of Mother Nature in the form of Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Lhotse, and Cho Oyu.
After climbing the Mera Peak, we then head on to cross the high Pass of Mingbo La, elevated at 5817 m above sea level. The Mingbo La Pass joins the two regions of Khumbu Himal. The Pass runs from the edge of the Ama Dablam mountain to the Khumbu Valley.
The Mingbo La Pass is no inferior to opening up the best views of beautiful mountains, including Makalu, Lhotse, Baruntse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku.
On our three-week Mera Peak climbing with Mingbola pass trek, we will cross another high Pass of Mera La at 5415 m before summitting the Mera Peak. In addition, we will meet wonderful people from the Tamangs and Sherpas who live in these little-visited areas of the Himalayas. There will also be time to explore Kathmandu.
In short, our Mera Peak Climbing with Mingbola Pass trek has almost everything that makes us go to the mountains. We will pass through the beautiful wilderness of Sagarmatha and Makalu Barun National Parks. We will pass through ancient villages that will give us an insight into the rich culture of the local people during the Mera Peak climbing With Mingbo La Pass.
Our program may be long, but it gives us ample time to acclimate and rest before the more difficult stages of the expedition. Therefore, it can be completed by an intermediate mountain tourist as well.
Our glorious yet adventurous expedition of Mera Peak climbing and Mingbo la Pass crossing begins with a spectacular flight to Lukla. From here, we descend into Hinku Valley, where we climb higher and higher in truly untouched countryside, along roaring mountain streams, on a winding forest path between huge rhododendron trees and pine forests, while the mountains almost bend over our heads.
Then, we conquer the Mera Peak and hike forward to cross the Mingbo La Pass to reach Pangboche. We will then return to Lukla and fly to Kathmandu.
Upon your arrival at Kathmandu Airport, our guide, with a warm welcome, will take you to your hotel. In the hotel room, relax from the fatigue of the long flight. In the evening, walk around and take in the city’s pulse for the first time.
Before we get closer to the trail leading to the Mera Peak Climbing with the Mingbo La pass trek, we will explore the capital of Nepal. But first, our guide will brief you about our expedition. Then, he will collect your documents to obtain the necessary permits for Mera Peak climbing.
We will then visit Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, and Pashupatinath and explore Thamel. In the afternoon, with the help of our guide, you can buy the things you need in the hiking shops. We will go to bed early at night because another tiring day awaits us the next day.
Early in the morning, we will drive to Kathmandu airport and fly to Lukla, the starting point of our trek. Here, our crew will greet us and take our luggage. We will have breakfast here, and then we will set off on our hike to Chhutak.
First, we will descend steeply for about two hours till we reach Surke Village. From here, we will then climb up again for about two hours till Pake Village where, according to legend, there was once a deep lake. A short hike through the thick rhododendron and pine forest will lead us to Chhutak under the Kalo Himal ridge.
Attention: If our flights are canceled, delayed, or diverted, we will drive to Ramechhap Airport for 4 hours and fly to Lukla.
Leaving Chhutak, we will gently climb towards Chhutak la Pass at 2945 m. then we descend to the Paiya Village and cross the Paiya Khola. From here, we will climb a ridge and descend through the terraced farming lands to reach the Pangkongma Village, where we will spend the night. The village is decorated with enchanting Mani Walls, monasteries and we can also the gurgling white waters of Dudh Koshi River. On the clear weather, we may also see the Everest expedition route from Jiri.
Leaving Chhutak, we will walk along the Hinku Khola River and climb the Pangkongma La pass (3175 m). descending from the Pass, we again walk along the bank of Hinku Khola and climb the Surke La. Then, hiking through the terraced field and dense forest of rhododendrons and fir, we reach Ramailo Danda, where we will spend the night. There are wonderful views of the peaks of Sanu Himal, Mojang Himal, and Mera Himal.
Today will be quite a strenuous walk, so we will start our hike early in the morning after breakfast. After some uphill and downhill hikes, we will reach Tama Khola in about three hours. Crossing the river, we will walk for another 20 minutes to reach newly built tea houses named 4G Danda, where we will have our lunch.
Then, walking through the deep rhododendron and bamboo forests, we arrive at Chhatra Khola. From here on, we have entered the restricted zone of Makalu Barun National Park. We can enjoy amazing views of Mera Ridge, Mojang Himal, and others along the route. We may even meet some red panda here.
After breakfast, we will begin our hike north along the main route towards Mera Peak. Initially the trail will lead us on a steep uphill walk for about an hour and 45 minutes. Then the trail will ease with a slope walk till we reach Taktor Village.
Next, we continue hiking along the Hinku Khola to reach the isolated village of Tashong Dingma. After resting for a while, we will resume our walk and cross the bridge over Sanu Khola to reach Kothe.
Today, we have the easiest walk in the enitre trek duration as we move towards Thaknak. We have deliberatley planned the short duration for this day so our bodies can adapt to the atmosphere of altitude of more than 4000 m.
We will walk along the Hinku Khola River once again, andshortly pass the summer herders’ settlement on the west bank of Hinku Drangka and have lunch at Gondishung.
Traversing the 200-year-old Lungsumgba Gompa, we walk towards Thaknak, where we will spend the night. Notice how the landscape has given way to alpine scrub and moraine- the effect of high altitude of course.
After breakfast, we will walk along the lateral moraine of the Kharka glacier, providing us with spectacular views of the Charpate Himal. We will then climb the steeper moraines and reach the head of the Hinku Nup glacier, from where we can see the Kangtenga Peak. We will then continue steeply to Khare, our overnight site.
Today is a rest day at Khare, so we will wake up a little late and have a leisurely breakfast. Then, we will set off on a steep rocky pass and gain an altitude of about 300 to 400 m. From here, we can observe the beautiful spectacle of Mera Peak and Mera La Pass. Then, we descend to Khare and spend the rest of the day sleeping, drinking the hot ginger-lemon-honey tea so popular with the locals.
This day is short in terms of trekking but very important for good acclimatization. We will reach the Mera La pass (5,415 m), from where the landscape opens up more and more. Behind us, the greatest mountains appear, including Makalu, Lhotse, and Everest. Then, we will descend about 100 m to reach the Mera Base Camp, where we will establish the camp and rest overnight.
Here, our guide will help us brush up on basic climbing techniques and demonstrate how to use our climbing equipment, such as ice axes, harnesses, and crampons. This training also includes learning the best climbing techniques with ropes.
From the base camp, we will ascend along a rocky path, which can be slippery if it has recently snowed, as there are a number of gaps here. We will then walk towards the top of the rock band, marked by a large mound of stones.
Soon, we are at the High Camp, where we will set up the camp, enjoying the magnificent views of Mount Everest, Makalu, Cho Oyu, the south side of Lhotse, Nuptse, Chamlang, and Baruntse.
Finally, the long-awaited day has arrived. We will begin the assault on the summit of Mera Peak very early in the morning. After quite a steep slope, the route will lead through moderately difficult snow and ice terrain in the last phase. We will be tied with a rope and secured by guides all the time.
At the top, a delicious feast awaits us – a view of Mt. Everest (8,848m), Cho-Oyu (8,201m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,463m), Kanchenjunga (8,586m), Nuptse (7,855m), Lobuche (6,145m), Chamlang (7,319m).
We will take a couple of summits and panoramic photos and then descend nicely back to the camp. Here, we will enjoy hot food and drink, then pack up the rest of our things and head down to Hunku Khola, where we can relax after today’s toil.
Leaving Hunku Khola, we climb towards Hunku Khola Valley and walk along the rocky moraine of Hunku glacier to reach Nup Lake, where we will establish our tent to rest overnight.
Today, we will cross the Mingbo La pass and trek to Nare Glacier. After breakfast early in the morning, we will climb along the rocky, icy moraine for 3 hours to reach the Pass. This Pass connects two regions of the Khumbu Himal.
We may have to use climbing gears such as ropes and crampons to reach the top of the Pass. There are many crevasses along the trail, so make sure to have secure footing and follow our guide’s instructions.
We can witness the magical spectacle of Makalu, Lhotse, Baruntse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku from the top of the Pass. After spending some time at the summit, we now head towards the Nare glacier. Here, we will set up the camp and rest for the night.
It is time to begin our descending journey to retrace to the capital’s civilization. After breakfast, we hike down to Mingbo village and walk along the Khumbu River. We will cross the long suspension bridge over the river and pass through the deep forest of rhododendrons once again to reach Pangboche, where we will spend the well-earned rest.
We will descend through beautiful rhododendron forests filled with birdsong. We will soon reach the Dudh Kosi River. After crossing it via a suspension bridge, we will continue our route up the slope along the path leading to Namche Bazaar.
Namche is a great place for a well-deserved celebration of reaching the summit.
On this day, from the morning, we will have a steep descent to the Dudh Koshi River and continue through Jorsale to Phakding, passing the gate of the National Park on the way. Then, there are only a few steps to Lukla, where our trekking started two weeks earlier.
We will return to Kathmandu by local flight from Lukla. If the flights are not going to Kathmandu, we will land at Ramachhap airport, from where we will take a 4-hour ride back to Kathmandu to the hotel, where we can once again enjoy full comfort.
Day off, opportunity to do nothing or explore the city. We can visit Patan and Bhaktapur today. We will have a farewell dinner with our teammates in the evening to celebrate our success.
After breakfast at the hotel, we go to the airport and fly home.
We also operated private trips.
The best time to climb Mera Peak and cross the Mingbo La Pass is autumn, from September to November. And the second favorable time would be the months from March to May in spring.
These two seasons offer a daytime temperature of 20 degrees and a nighttime temperature of -0 to 5 degrees in the mountains. Additionally, the great mountain views will be clear, the vegetation will be rich with flora and fauna, and the mountain edges will be open.
In winter, crossing the Pass and conquering the summit can be challenging due to the accumulation of old and fresh snow. The summer brings heavy precipitation, which makes the route more difficult.
The Mera Peak With Mingbo La Pass, lying in the Khumbu region, is approximately 75 km from Kathmandu. Our real adventure begins in the mountain village of Lukla, which is 367 km from Kathmandu. However, the capital is separated from Lukla by only 135 km by air, which can be covered within 25 minutes by flight.
The highest point of our expedition beside the Mera Peak itself is the Mingbo La Pass, elevated at 5817 m above sea level. Our 21-day Mera Peak With Mingbo La Pass program requires us to hike for 5 to 7 hours on average, covering around 10 to 12 km daily.
The challenging 21-day journey of mounting the Mera Peak and Mongba La Pass includes 16 days of hiking adventure. We will walk for about 5 to 7 hours approximately each day. We have designed each day focusing on proper acclimatization. As we progress to the summit, we will gradually ascend at a slow pace. Therefore, on day 9, when we trek from Thaknak to Khare, we will only walk for 2 to 3 hours.
However, during the summit day on day 13, we hike for 9 to 10 hours, which is the toughest and longest day of our trek.
The classic route to the Mera Peak Climbing with Mingbola Pass Trek is not technically difficult. The Mera Peak is classified as 1B alpine grade, which makes it a moderately difficult trekking peak. However, we will also cross the Mingbo la Pass, overcoming the steep slope of up to 40° with an inclination of 35-40°.
Therefore, you require some skills to walk in crampons on a glacier, walk in a group, use ice ax, climbing and descending along a fix require.
The major risk that we may encounter is altitude sickness, for which we have separated proper acclimatization days at Kathmandu and Khare.
No, Mera Peak With Mingbo La Pass is designed for intermediate trekkers who have certain mountaineering skills and have some experience in high altitude treks of more than 5000 m altitude. Although Mera Peak is a trekking peak, it still needs good physical and mental health.
In addition, we will spend five days and nights in tents, so you have to be prepared for cold nights and also for adverse weather conditions. Do not forget that we also have to overcome the High Pass of Mingbo La and Nera Glacier at the culmination of the expedition.
So, if you are a beginner, you can first ascend the Mera Peak and then participate in our expedition for an additional challenge.
For our strenuous journey, you must possess a good level of physical and mental fitness for which you can walk or hike regularly to improve your endurance and overall fitness. You can climb indoors or outdoors to improve your strength and muscular endurance.
You can also do exercises such as running and cycling to improve your cardiovascular endurance. If possible, do high altitude training to get used to the altitude and reduce altitude risks. Participate in smaller expeditions before attempting this climb.
There is another route that is possible to take to approach Mera Peak and Mongba La Pass. You can progress toward the Peak through the Zatra-La pass for optimal acclimatization.
It allows you to walk less and acclimatize better if you do not go straight to the pass but do radial acclimatization trips. Both routes meet at Kothe and continue the same way.
Reaching an altitude of more than 3000 m, you are susceptible to developing the mild symptoms of altitude sickness. Headache, appetite loss, sleep loss, and dizziness are the symptoms that subside within two or three days as the body adapts to the high altitude.
Administration of Diamox or Ibuprofen will help relieve the symptoms. If the symptoms persist, you have to immediately go down to the elevation where you didn’t feel these symptoms.
Drinking plenty of water, soup, lemon, ginger tea, and walking slowly are the tricks to prevent altitude sickness.
