Trip Overview

Nayakang Peak Climbing 15 Days is an excellent opportunity to climb the less-popular trekking peak of Naya Kanga and walk along the rarely used trail in the Langtang and Helambu regions of Nepal. The peak was formerly known as Ganja La Chuli because of its closest proximity to the west side of Ganja La Pass.

Naya Kanga Peak, at 5844 m altitude, is considered one of the most beautiful mountains in Nepal. More attempts have been made to climb it than the more popular trekking peaks in the Khumbu area due to its proximity to Kathmandu and lesser technicality.

No one knows for sure who first climbed Naya kanga Peak, but many give the credit to Bill Tilman and Peter Lloyd, who were probably the first foreign trekkers to cross the Ganja La pass in this region in 1949.

The standard Nayakang Peak climbing route is via the Northeast Ridge on a line of ice and snow and later on the North Ridge to the summit. The summit of the peak offers the dreamy panorama of several mountains, including Dorje Lakpa, Langtang Lirung, Langtang II, Tsergo Ri, Kibgyu Ri, Ganchenpo Peak, and Yansi Tsenji Peak.

Our 15-day Nayakang peak climbing expedition also allows us to walk through the delightful vegetation and forests of Langtang National Park. With our luck, we may see numerous rare animals that we cannot find anywhere else on the globe, including red pandas, musk deer, Himalayan brown and black bears, etc.

In addition, dense rhododendrons, oak, juniper, and fir forests with cascading waterfalls along the trail make our adventurous crossing more memorable. Plus, Tibetan Buddhism, ancient Sherpa culture and traditions, colorful prayer flags, and beautiful Mani Walls also accompany us through the many small villages and alpine pastures on the way. Sometimes, very traditional houses decorated with wooden carvings will be our warm overnight lodges for the night.

How does our journey begin?

The 15-day Naykang peak climbing journey begins with your arrival in Kathmandu. From Kathmandu, you head towards Sybrubesi, from where the trek begins. The trail takes you to places like Lama Hotel, Langtang Village, and Kyanjin Gumpa. You will spend an additional day at Kyanjin Gompa to acclimatize and then head to base camp.

During this time, you can hike up to Kenhin Ri and enjoy panoramic views of mountain peaks like Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Langshisha Ri, and many other summits. The climb to the summit of Naya Kanga is not very technical but you have to tackle steep snow, icy surfaces, and rocky trails. After climbing the summit, you return to Syabrubesi, where your journey began.

Today, we will venture on a guided tour of Kathmandu. The capital is a remarkable hotspot of cultural drama and boasts of seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Swayambhunath, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath, and Boudhanath are some of the monuments you will explore for the day.

In the evening, our guide will introduce you to other group members and discuss the activities for the following days.

Today, we head to Sybrubesi, at the western edge of Langtang National Park. The ride takes us north of Kathmandu along a bumpy road. Once we are out of Kathmandu, we can immerse ourselves in rural Nepal. We also get to see Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, and Langtang Himal.

Passing Dhunche, we arrive at Sybrubesi, where we will move into our lodge and make preparations for the start of the trek tomorrow.

Today, our hike begins with a crossing of the Bhote Koshi River towards Thulo Syabru. Then, we climb through subtropical forests before following the Langtang River. As we pass through the bamboo and oak forests, we may see glimpses of Langur roaming in the trees.

Soon, we will reach Lama Hotel, where there are lodges and shops that supply trekkers en route. Night at the Lama Hotel.

Walking along the Langtang River, we walk through dense jungle with Langtang Lirung in the distance. We will pass Gumanchok and hike along the wide gorge to reach Ghoratabela. Shortly afterward, we reach Thyangsyap, where we will take a short break for lunch.

A short walk forward, and we have Tsergo Ri on the horizon. Passing bushes and meadows, we reach Langtang, where we will rest for the night.

Leaving Langtang Village, we continue towards Mundu with a constant view of the imposing Gangchenpo up front. We will be at Mundu shortly; the path will be easy from here. We hike past the white and gold chorten and cross a long suspension bridge. Then, a short, gentle uphill, we arrive at Kyanjin Gumpa village, where we will spend the next two nights.

Today is a rest day with the opportunity to climb Kenjin Ri for 4 hours approximately. From above, there is a great view of Gangchenpo, Langtang Lirung, and other mountain giants. After descending from the viewpoint, there is time in the afternoon to relax, take a walk to the monastery, or visit the local cheese dairy set up on a Swiss initiative.

From Kyanjin Gumpa today, we will first cross a suspension bridge over the Langtang Khola. Then we climb the moderately steep hill, passing through a juniper forest. We will arrive at a beautiful viewpoint overlooking the valley and the village, giving us a view of the Langtang Lirung glacier.

Crossing numerous yak pastures, we are finally at Naya Kang Base Camp, where we will spend the night in a tent.

Today, we will ascend along the snowy road to reach the Naya Kang High Camp. The route is steep and filled with rocks and icy glaciers, which may require the use of fixed ropes.

Along this path, we can enjoy the mesmerizing views of Langtang Lirung, Tsergo Ri, Yansi Tsenji, Ganchenpo Peak, and other mountains. After reaching the camp, we must retire early as we will head to the summit tomorrow.

We get up early as we will be crossing the mighty Naya Kang Peak today. We will climb up the sparsely vegetated slope and briefly cross the scree from the former glacial moraine. Then we pass on boulders where we may have to use our hands to support ourselves.

We may have to use the ladders attached to the rock to climb to the top of the peak. If the terrain is slippery and icy, our guide may install fixed ropes.

Get ready for the true dream panorama of Dorje Lakpa, Langtang Lirung, Langtang II, Tsergo Ri, Kibgyu Ri, Ganchenpo Peak, and Yansi Tsenji Peak.

After spending some time at the summit, we descend to the High Camp and rest under the tent.

After a restful night and the satisfaction of a job well done, we will continue our descent toward the bottom of the Langtang Valley. Past the Naya Kang Base Camp, we will descend along the rocky terrain to a kharka, then into the forest until crossing the Langtang River. Shortly, we will enter the highest hamlet of Langtang- the Kyanjin Gumpa, where we will rest overnight.

Leaving Kyanjin Gumpa, we hike down the wide path lined with impressive Mani Walls leading us to Langtang Village. We then cross dense forests and numerous hamlets to finally reach Lama Hotel, where we will have a warm, delicious meal and rest for the night.

After breakfast, we will continue our descent along the Langtang River. We will cross the river on a long-hanging bridge, then hike through dense oak and giant rhododendron forest to reach Thulo Syabru. With the beautiful panorama of Ganesh, Manaslu, and Langtang Himals, we trek down to Syabrubesi, from where we started our Naya Kang Peak climbing journey.

Trip Information of Nayakang Peak Climbing 15 Days

Best time to Naya Kanga Peak Climbing

The optimal time to summit Naya Kanga Peak is between September and November in autumn. Weather conditions are relatively stable, and visibility is good, which facilitates safe climbing. With warm temperatures combined with excellent visibility, this time period offers you the best mountain views without it being very cold in the highlands.

The second optimal time to climb the Peak is between March and May in spring. The temperature keeps on rising with sporadic rainfall, the jungle is greener and denser, and the rivers have more water.

Elevation and Distance

Elevated at 5,844m above sea level, Naya Kanga Peak is perched in between the Langtang and Helambu regions of Nepal. The summit lies in the northern part of Kathmandu Valley, approximately 54.8 km away. The highest elevation where we will spend the night is at the altitude of 5100 m at the High Camp of Naya Kanga Peak.

Along the 15-day expedition to the summit, we cover around 15 km each day, walking 5 to 7 hours every day.

Maximum/Minimum walk per day

We have to hike for exactly 10 days in our 15-day journey to summit the Naya Kanga Peak. During the ten-day hiking journey, we will walk approximately 15 km each day, but each day’s distance differs based on the overnight village, terrain, and acclimatization program.

Our program has been drafted with ample rest days and short walks. Most days, we will walk for only 5 to 6 hours, with the exception of the extra day we spend on Kyanjin Gumpa. We will hike to Kyanjin Ri for 3 hours, which is the minimum walk we undertake on this tour.

However, be ready to walk for 9 to 10 hours when you are about to summit the Peak and descend to the High Camp of Naya Kanga Peak.

Difficulty and Acclimatization Nayakang Peak Climbing

The Nayakang Peak Climbing difficulty is rated PD+ in alpine grade, which means it is a moderately challenging Peak to climb with no technical difficulty or the need for past climbing or mountaineering experience.

However, while ascending to the Base and High Camps of Naya Kanga, you have to overcome snow slopes, some crevasses located west of Ganja La Pass, and finally, the short ridge section to the summit. Therefore, the skill to ascend and descend on a fixed rope and the use of crampons and ladders can be an added advantage.

The major risk in this expedition is that of altitude, but we have designed the days of this program with a focus on gradual ascends. We will not hurry our pace and walk a minimum distance so our bodies can get used to the atmosphere. We also have rest days at Kathmandu and Kyanjin Gompa, where you can acclimate and prepare for the days ahead.

Can a beginner climb Nayakang Peak?

Naya Kanga Peak climbing is an excellent opportunity to step to almost 6000 meters for the first time. The classic route is not technically difficult and all the necessary skills can be mastered during the ascent under the guidance of a guide. Therefore, this trip can be an excellent opportunity for beginner climbers to set foot at the top of the snowy Himalayas.

Still, the Naya Kanga Peak climbing needs some skills like walking in crampons, climbing and descending along a railing rope using a lifting and descending device. So we recommend you to have an experience at an altitude of more than 5000m.

Preparation and training for Nayakang Peak Climbing

Extraordinary tours such as Naya Kanga Peak climbing require special preparation but, above all, a certain level of know-how and certain physical requirements from the participants (e.g., good fitness, experience in using ice axes and crampons, etc.).

You also need knowledge of materials, knots, and various climbing techniques, including rappelling and lowering. Therefore, we suggest you join preparatory courses for an alpine summit in your country.

Learn to walk safely with crampons, manage easy rock climbs, rope up correctly, and handle equipment on tour. You can get tips from experienced expedition members and mountain guides. Or, watch YouTube videos that can guide you correctly.

Alternate routes of Nayakang Peak Climbing

If you are up for a more thrill, you can add Ganja La Pass crossing to this tour. The initial route to the summit follows the same trail we planned for you. Then, upon returning, you can move on to cross the Pass from the High Camp and retrace back to Kathmandu, passing through Sermathang and Melamchi Pul.

You can also integrate the Gosaikunda trek with the summit of Naya Kanga Peak. Upon returning, you can trek to Sing Gompa from the Lama Hotel and move on further to Gosaikunda Lake. You will return to Kathmandu after traversing Kutumsang, Chisapani, and Sundarijal.

Or, as an optional adventure, you can climb the Yala Peak at 5500 m above sea level. From Kyanjin Gumpa, you can trek to Yala Peak base camp and summit the peak the next day. Then, you can move on to Naya Kanga Base Camp.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness is one of the risks that you may face when climbing Naya Kanga Peak. The main symptom is headache, which often occurs together with a reduced or loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting. Sleep disorders are typical, sometimes leading to insomnia.

In such cases, you should take rest and avoid further exertion. Symptomatically, you can take ibuprofen and paracetamol for headaches. Other symptoms can be treated with Diamox. However, if the condition does not improve by the next morning, you should definitely descend to the last altitude you spent the night at, where you were symptom-free.

Transportation, Meals, and Drinks for Nayakang Expedition

We offer all ground transportation for the trip, including airport pick-up and drop-off service. We will take you to Syabrubesi from Kathmandu and Syabrubesi to Kathmandu in a private jeep or bus (based on group size).

In Kathmandu, we offer complimentary breakfast, lunch, and dinner are excluded. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be offered during the trek in the mountain lodge, with fresh fruit after dinner. Tea and cookies will be provided as snacks. Dal vat and vegetables will be a typical common food with options of noodles, Tibetan bread, eggs, Thukpa, Pizza, and more.

When camping, our kitchen crew will prepare hot meals for you three times a day with hot tea or coffee and hot water.

Communication, Gadgets charging, and Internet/wifi

Upto Kyanjin Gumpa, you can enjoy communication with your friends and family through NTC or NCELL mobile networks. These networks also provide internet data packages that you can conveniently use to connect with friends and family. The mountain lodges along the route also offer charging and WIFI facilities but at additional cost.

These services may not be available at the base camp and High Camp, so we advise you to carry power banks. You definitely don’t want to miss out on the chance to capture the moments on your mobile or camera.

Permits for Nayakang Peak Climbing

For Naya Kanga Peak climbing, we need a TIMS card, Langtang National Park Permit, and Naya Kanga Peak climbing permit. All these permits will be obtained on the second day of our Kathmandu sightseeing guided tour. When you are touring, our representative will collect your documents and process the issuance of permits on your behalf. The costs of all these permits are included in our service.
