Trip Overview

The Ruby Valley Trek is a spectacular highland journey across the foothills of the Himalayas underneath the towering peaks of Ganesh Parbat. This trek is primarily a part of the Langtang region. As opposed to other Himalayan treks, which typically follow the banks of rivers from north to south, this path primarily heads east or west, climbing and crossing numerous ridges along the way. This means that there are greater ascents and descents (over 2500 meters of total altitude gain), which calls for strong legs, and good trek preparation.

Nonetheless, the scenic perks greatly outweigh the trek labor. Our trip through the Ruby Valley Trek itinerary will take you to locations that are seldom explored by most trekkers, such as secluded towns, gorgeous passes, hospitable locals from a variety of cultural backgrounds, and a feeling of going back in time to customs and a way of life that have largely remained unaffected by contemporary technology.

Outstanding views of the main Himalayan ranges, such as the Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, and far-off Annapurna range, are also available from the Ruby Valley Trek itinerary. Several nearby communities receive high-grade wood for roofing and other building materials from the impressive forests of hemlock trees that can be found there.

It also has been blessed with a wealth of medicinal herbs, which were traded for salt, fibers such as wool, gems, and animals in China after being hauled there on a mule or foot across the Himalayas.

The inhabitants of Ruby Valley are a diverse blend of cultures. We first come across Tamang tribes in the Langtang Valley. They have a Tibetan accent and are mostly Buddhists, however, some of them are also Christians who came initially from somewhere else. While hiking west, we come across Gurung settlements, that are primarily Buddhists and have Tibetan roots both traditionally and linguistically.

They are distinct from Tamang communities in that they have been more impacted by the culture of the southern region. The Ghale, Magar, Brahmin, Chhetri, Kami, and Damai people, who are predominantly Hindu and inhabit the low valleys, are located below the Phulkharka region in the western part of the trek. Their physical characteristics and culture are similar to those of Southern communities.

Nevertheless, Dhami Jhankri (shamans) are also acknowledged and practiced by almost every community in the Ruby Valley, particularly during religious events, and when a person needs treatment. In the present day, these practices have slowly gone out of practice.

Such an interesting destination deserves a visit, that is why we have come up with this 8 Days Ruby Valley Trek package. Keep on reading till the end to know all there is to know about this trek.

Ruby Valley Trek 8 Days Itinerary

01

Day 1 of the 8 Days Ruby Valley Trek starts as you arrive at the international airport in Kathmandu. Once you get to the Tribhuvan International Airport, you will have to fill out the visa application form that you can get at the immigration desk. Once you are done with the visa procedure, our agent waiting for you outside the terminal. He will guide you to your 3-star hotel for the night.

Since this trek is only 8 days long, you can opt for the least amount of visa fee you can pay, i.e. $30 for 15 days of stay. You can pay your visa fees at a bank booth within the airport terminal. After you pay the due amount at the counter, you will be given a bank receipt. You are to submit all the required paperworks and the bank receipt at the immigration booth.

If you have a couple of hours to yourself, be sure to check out the local neighborhood where you are staying or visit one of the major attractions of Kathmandu. The trip from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, which is situated within Lantang National Park situated north of the country’s capital, is not any longer than 60 kilometers but takes over six hours in total, including stops for lunch and bathroom breaks. During the monsoon season, landslides are frequent and the roadways may become uneven and prone to potholes.

The roads are mostly patchy asphalt with potholes, while they are worst covered in sandy rock and dirt tracks eroded by high traffic at times. It ascends over a sequence of narrow switchbacks through a specific mountain just north of Kathmandu, then descends once more from the valley on its opposite slope into Lantang National Park.

As we move forward, we will pass through settlements with villages that sound more and more Tibetan, including Chilime, Ramche, and Dunche. We get to get off our seats at the Lantang National Park entrypoint where they will check for permits.

Snow leopards, Himalayan black bears, wild dogs, red pandas, and other animals that are at risk, can be found at Langtang National Park, a 1710 square kilometer protected region that spans 18 distinct ecosystems. The colors of the surroundings throughout the park are noticeably distinct, with the national flower, the rhododendron, lighting up the dark soil, and green plants.

After about 7 hours of traveling by Jeep, we will finally reach the village of Syabrubesi.

Ascending to Rongga Bhanjyang on your third day of the Ruby Valley trek brings about a dramatic shift in scenery as you enter the lowlands at the base of the Ganesh Himal range. There are two ways to go up: take the walking route, which is a shorter but trickier route, or join the asphalt road, which is an extended but easier route.

We’ll go on the two-hour walk to the summit along the walking trail. We will take a break and relax here with a drink. The village of Gatlang is marked by a yellow circle track which you can see on this resting point. There is a spot to have or drink something at the top of the trek, along with a stunning view of a range of snow-capped peaks

Following the climb, it is a 1.5-hour easy walk on the leveled ground to Gatlang village. There are route markers that direct solo travelers. Following the 2015 earthquake, every new home is now roofed with silver or vibrantly colored tin roofs. Before that, houses were roofed with stone slabs which are aesthetically more pleasing but practically not as good as tin roofs..

This Ruby Valley Trek itinerary will take you from Gatlang to Somdang, which is just an amazing and memorable experience. The trip requires 6 to 7 hours to finish and is around 16 kilometers in distance.

Gatlang is the starting point for the hike to the wild freshwater lake, Parbati Kunda. This stunning lake, bearing the name of Lord Shiva’s wife Parbati, is considered extremely sacred by the locals. This lake is gorgeous and holy and makes for a picturesque scene. The route will keep going, winding past numerous hills and peaceful rural communities. The charming dirt trails in the area offer a calming trekking experience.

The farther you travel on the track, the number of tea house lessen. We continue going till we arrive at Yuri Kharka across the forest of oak, and pine. After a filling lunch at Yuri Kharka, we will walk through Khurphu Bhanjyang on the path to the Somdang. It takes a few hours to walk from Somdang to a closed mine.

The mine is now closed but you can still go in there to check out the delicate adit (mining hole). Rubies, zinc, copper, and tin, were the main exports that came out of this mine. Thus, the Ruby Valley Trek was named.

The ethnic populations of Tamang and Gurung live in the lovely town of Gatlang. You should visit the cheese-producing facility and the Parbati pond, which is holy to Hindu pilgrims. We will stay the night in a tea house in Gatlang.

The walk from Somdang to Tipling via Pangsang Pass is one of the most thrilling and challenging parts of the Ruby Valley Trek. It typically takes six to seven hours to walk the approximately 17 kilometers that separate these two villages.

The journey starts at Somdang, a charming town known for its peaceful surroundings and kind residents. The highest point will be reached along the route to Pangsang Pass, which is 3,842 meters above sea level. The incline of the trail may make it difficult, but the amazing scenes of the nearby peaks and valleys make the effort worthwhile.

On today’s trek, you will cross the magnificent Pangsang la Pass. After that, the trail leads you through a picturesque jungle to the Pangsang Kharka, which is a vast grazing land for the local cattle.

You will be able to take in the views of the Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, Langtang Lirung, Annapurna, and other mountains from this viewpoint. You will pass through sections of the deep jungle before reaching the village of Tippling. Buddhist monasteries and other historic monuments are based on the Tibetan Buddhism culture and the villages in this region are primarily inhabited by Tamangs.

Today’s trek route will take you through the region’s most scenic terrain. The aesthetic villages of Shertung and Chalish Gaon will be on the list of our stops.

To reach the village of Chalish Gaon, a tiny, lovely settlement, we have to first cross a river and walk for a couple of hours. From there, we will reach Sherthung Village following a 10-minute walk, this village also offers a scenic viewpoint. There, you can take in the view of the green valleys beneath and the snow-capped peaks. This is a brief and easy trek, taking around two to three hours to finish.

At a height of 2,078 meters above sea level, our day trek starts at Tipling. The hike to Chalish Goan is comparatively easier than the previous day’s hike as the route today is descending at a steady rate.

The beautiful and quite straightforward hike from Chalish to Borang is the second leg of the Ruby Valley hike, which starts soon. As it passes past small communities and terraced farmland, this trail provides beautiful scenes of the Himalayan countryside.

You will trek along the Lishne Khola, passing through Kimdang Phedi Village and Ankhu Khola. Moreover, you’ll get the chance to meet with friendly locals of the region and understand their customs and how they survive on the daily.

Trip Information of Ruby Valley Trek 8 Days

How does our trip start?

The Ruby Valley Trek itinerary starts in Kathmandu. Since your arrival in Kathmandu, we will begin working on the logistics of your 8 Days Ruby Valley Trek. You will take a much-needed rest for the night and prepare for the travel that awaits you the next day. We strongly recommend you not go for a night out in Kathmandu, as tempting as it is, your body is tired from the long flight and it needs to re-energize fully.

The next day, you will travel to Syabrubesi, the gateway to the Langtang region and the first destination for the Ruby Valley trek itinerary. From there, we will move to Gatlang (on the 2nd day of the 8 Days Ruby Valley Trek). This will be the first day of trekking so we will take it slow and steady. Climbing slowly is the key as you could feel a little dizzy (signs of altitude sickness) if you ascend too quickly.

8 Days Ruby Valley Trek Difficulty

The 8 Days Ruby Valley Trek is a simple but must-do trek, consisting of a few tricky sections along the itinerary. We recommend that you be genuinely into trekking to do this trek as you will be walking for 5 to 6 hours on average or longer depending on the route you will follow. The majority of the trek route is easy but there are some sections that are steep and require extra physical push.

While it’s not required, having past trekking experience can really benefit you. Even if you are a novice, you may still do this Ruby Valley Trek itinerary if you are physically prepared for 5 days of total hiking.

Best seasons for Ruby Valley Trek

The Ruby Valley Trek itinerary can be basically done at any season and at any time of the year. Nevertheless, as per the experts, springtime and fall are the best time of year to visit this region.

March through May offers pleasant springtime weather for the 8-day Ruby Valley Trek. As the winter goes by, new buds start forming, the grasses get greener, and overall nature is blooming once again. During this period of spring, the trekking paths are free of falling leaves which can make it slippery,.The hills are vibrantly green as new leaves grow and you will also get to see the blooming Rhododendron flowers along with other native Himalayan flowers.

The season of fall, which occurs in the Ruby Valley Trek itinerary from September to November, is yet another of the region’s most suitable seasons. Since this season falls after the monsoon, the rain clears away the air giving us a bright blue sky and an overall great scene of the landscape.

The median temp during the day and night are favorable. Traveling to this region during the autumn period is the best bet as you will get to enjoy endlessly bright blue sky and smogless landscape scenes, and it is also the festive season in Nepal.

June, the summer, is another ideal month to hike the Ruby Valley Trail. However, the region receives a lot of rain during the monsoon season (July to August), which makes the routes muddy and risky.

Can a beginner join this trip?

Yes, a beginner can absolutely join the 8 Days Ruby Valley Trek. The Ruby Valley Trek itinerary is suitable for people with no previous trekking experience. Kids can also tag along this easy journey but we suggest that kids under 10 should not try this itinerary as it can be a bit too much for them. And since we will not be spending much time over 3500 meters, we are less susceptible to altitude sickness.

8 Days Ruby Valley Trek Altitude Sickness

Altitude Sickness is something that can happen to anyone unless your body is well adapted to the Himalayan conditions. Once you hit the 3000 mark, you will definitely feel shortness of breath as the amount of oxygen in the air gets thinner. But since our trek guide will make sure that the ascending pace is safe, we will likely not be a victim of altitude sickness. The key is to slowly habitualize your body to the change in environmental factors such as temperature and atmospheric changes.

If at any point during the 8 Days Ruby Valley Trek, you need immediate medical attention following a case of altitude sickness, we will contact the emergency services who will evacuate you to the nearest medical center. Emergency services are not a part of the Ruby Valley Trek, so make sure that you are travel-insured since they will be covering your emergency services expenses.

Be sure that you read all the clauses of the travel insurance as most Himalayan travel insurance covers a certain altitude of emergency services. Some are specifically made for extremely high altitudes (over 5000 meters) while others are made for under 5000 meters.

Accommodation, Food and Drink

In addition, our Ruby Valley Trek itinerary includes breakfast at a 3-star hotel in Kathmandu where you will be staying on the first and night of the trek. You will stay at simple tea rooms managed by the locals after the Ruby Valley Trek starts.

In addition, the purpose of tea houses is to draw visitors who want to have a direct experience of local life. There are no hot showers or restrooms at these tea houses. Rather, there are standard, traditional restrooms with warm water in a bucket as a substitute for showers.

We only provide you with breakfast in Kathmandu. Guests are free to select from a wide variety of cuisines in Kathmandu for lunch, dinner, and other refreshments. However, it is not a part of our package.

On the other hand, the Ruby Valley Trek package includes all meals for the trekking days starting from day 2. Since we are going to stay at tea houses, our food options are likewise restricted to what is available in the vicinity. Throughout the hike, we’ll probably eat Daal Bhat, a traditional Nepalese dish, and Tamang cuisine from the area. However, if you prefer, you can bring in food from Kathmandu behind the porter’s back.

Transportation for Ruby Valley Trek

Transportation for this trek includes drop off and pick up at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, at the start and end of the Ruby Valley Trek itinerary. You will also be transported to the starting point of the Ruby Valley Trek, the town of Syabrubesi. Similarly, at the end of the trek, you will be transported to Kathmandu from Dundure Khola.

Permit of Ruby Valley Trek

To travel the conserved area of Langtang National Park that falls in this Ruby Valley Trek itinerary, trekkers require the Langtang National Park entrance permit. This permit is obtainable at Dunche and Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu. Since we will not be traveling to Dunche, our trek guide will help you get the permit in Kathmandu. These permits are covered by the Ruby Valley Trek package.

Trip preparation and fitness

Preparing well for any journey is the key to having the best experience. Once you are physically and mentally prepared for the trek, confident that you can complete the Ruby Valley Trek without any major complications, you are already halfway through the trek. As per our trek experts, you need to work out for at least a month prior to the 8 Days Ruby Valley Trek.

For your workout session, you should include long walks or inclined walks. If there is somewhere you can mimic the actual hike, you should go there 2 or 3 times a week just to get yourself used to it. If you do not have such luxury, you can simply go to your gym and use the ladder machine or set up the treadmill in an incline position.

Alternative routes

The most popular and practical alternative route for the Ruby Valley Trek includes going to Dundure Bridge from Kathmandu on day 1 and to Chalish Goan, the following day. This is a reversed circuit and you will be following the standard trekking trail just in reverse. On day 3, we will get to explore the village of Chalish, get to Somdang, the next day, and ultimately to Gatlang where the trekking days come to an end.

You can also shorten this trek by not going to Somdang on day 4 but rather getting back to Dundure. This way, the trek concludes in just 5 days but you will miss out on a couple of villages on this alternative itinerary.

Cost & Budget for 8 Days Ruby Valley Trek

We have priced this Ruby Valley Trek at USD ________. Our pricing is justifiable as we will be providing you with services like Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner every day during the trekking days, airport pickup and drop-off by private car, accommodation in tea houses during the trek, 3-star hotel accommodation in Kathmandu, transport from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi and from Dundure River to Kathmandu by bus or private jeep, Langtang national park permit, fresh fruit after dinner every night, licensed trek guide (fluent in English), and porters.

Gadgets charging & Internet

Since this trek is one of the most visited trekking destinations, infrastructures like electricity are well present all the way through the Ruby Valley Trek itinerary. You will find charging ports at every stop we make along the way but the tea house owners might charge you a little extra for this service. At times, you might experience power outages in this region, no destination in Nepal is safe from power outages and the Ruby Valley is no different.

You might not be able to charge your devices during power outages even though they have solar energy in reserve. They typically use solar energy to light their houses and lodges so you are not likely to be permitted to use it for charging your devices.

Likewise, you can find WiFi in most of our daily destinations but they are comparatively slower than the ones you will use in Kathmandu. In addition to that, you are likely to be charged extra for using WiFi. These expenses are not included in the Ruby Valley Trek package.

Your Extra expenses

Here’s what is excluded from your Ruby Valley Trek package: International flight tickets and related expenses, visa fees upon arrival at the international airport in Kathmandu, additional accommodations, food, and drinks in Kathmandu (if staying an extra day), any kind of drinks or beverages, hot showers, battery charging, internet bills during trekking, medical and travel insurance, extra luggage weight, tips for the guide and porters.

What to expect for this Ruby Valley Trek

You can basically expect to have an amazing and memorable trip. Generally, treks in Nepal can be physically demanding, but since this is one of the easiest treks you will not have to deal with a great amount of physical exertion. One of the best things about this Ruby Valley Trek itinerary is the flexibility. You can customize the itinerary in a number of ways based on your personal preference giving it an intimate touch.

At the start of the trek, you will be transported to Syabrubesi which is the starting point for a number of treks including the Tamang Heritage Trail, the Langtang Valley Trek, the Ganesh Himal Trek, and a couple more. This little town is bustling compared to the rest of the towns in the region and is a good place to stack up on your trekking needs.

As you move up the valley, you will be rewarded with views that are just too good to ignore. We are sure you will stop for a moment to really take in the views, it’s just that good. The people you will meet along the way will let you in on the insights of the region, being as hospitable as possible. The beauty of traveling this 8 Days Ruby Valley Trek is the fact that you will experience authentic Tamang culture along with Himalayan scenes that will capture all your attention.
