Trip Overview

Within Nepal’s limited areas, the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour is one of the most exciting and daring overland tours. Upper Mustang, which was off-limits to outsiders until 1990 AD, is additionally referred to as the Forbidden Kingdom. For people who lack sufficient time to explore the upper Mustang area or who are not physically capable, we have designed a four-wheel-drive Jeep trip option.

Widely recognized for its historic characteristics, the Upper Mustang rough terrain path includes wall caves, Buddhist temples, the city enclosed by walls (Lo-Manthang), natural mines, historical sites, rock fossilized organisms, and the allure of buried treasures.

In addition to offering the ability to travel off-road to a distant region of the Himalayas, the exciting jeep tour offers a chance to learn about the customs, cuisine, and distinct way of living of the Thakali locals. We’ll go alongside the Kaligandaki River, which is home to the deepest gorge in the world.

Visitors will be treated to breathtaking vistas of several mountains along the journey, including Mt. Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Hiunchuli, Macchapucchre, Nilgiri, and numerous more snow-capped Himalayan peaks. Due to the similarity of the surroundings and daily lives of those who live there, a Jeep tour to Upper Mustang may satisfy your interest in learning about Tibet.

Stepping inside the Kali Gandaki Valley, the trip officially starts at Jomsom. The journey passes via the prohibited Kingdom of Lo Manthang after passing through Chhusang, Gheling, and Tsarang. Walking through various agricultural regions, as well as completely barren and lunar-like terrain, you are treated to breathtaking vistas of the summits of Dhampus, Nilgiri, and the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

Along the walk, you come across several old gompas, monasteries, caverns, and traditional ways of life. You go to Chhosar village (3,860 meters) on the second day at Lo Manthang, where you may see buildings and monasteries dating from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

To take you on such an exciting and historic region of Nepal, we have designed this Upper Mustang Jeep Tour which is just the perfect option for those with limited time. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the tour package with itinerary.

Upper Mustang Jeep Tour Itinerary

01

As soon as you step foot at Kathmandu’s international airport, your Upper Mustang Jeep Tour begins. You will need to complete the application for a tourist visa when you arrive before you exit through the airport.

The personnel at the airport will request a few identity documents or paperwork necessary for the approval of your visa. Once everything is in order, you will need to pay the airport officials a fixed price for your visa. This is not something that this journey package will cover; it is a personal expenditure.

You will meet one of our staff waiting to greet you at the terminal as you exit the building. He will first greet you, introduce himself, and take you to your designated hotel that we have booked for you. Our rep will provide you with a brief overview of our upcoming activities at the hotel during your check-in procedure.

Today, we’ll continue southwest of the Prithvi Highway and travel along the Baglung Road, which runs through a series of extremely tall hills and Himalayan mountains.

The temperature of adventure keeps on increasing as we pass through the popular Kushma- the home to the world’s second-tallest bungee jump cliff and Nepal’s longest suspension bridge.

Passing through the churning rivers, and green slopes, we will reach Beni. The adventure is actually beginning now as the actual off-the-beaten trail of Nepal begins to take us down into the Kali Gandaki gorge.

As we approach Tatopani (1190 m), the road becomes more constrained. The road becomes somewhat easier after Tatopani as we continue on toward Dana Village at 1445 meters.

And a minute’s stop to gaze at the plunging waters of the Rupse Waterfall would be nothing less than magical. We now turn left onto the Kagbeni route of the Kaligandaki corridor, which continues along the Beni Jomsom road route and passes the villages of Ghasa, Lete, Kobang, and Kalopani before arriving at Marpha village, which is rich in culture and has an apple form.

Trip Information of Upper Mustang Jeep Tour

How does the tour start?

Beginning with one of the most picturesque air rides from Pokhara to Jomsom, the route to Mustang passes between the massive Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountain chains.

The majority of tourists who begin or finish their standard Annapurna Circuit trek in Jomsom also start their journey to Upper Mustang from this region’s capital.

Lomangthang may be reached in three days. Since roads are now operational, visitors who do not have sufficient time to spare may now take an amazing Jeep excursion to the Upper Mustang area. Previously, the route leading to the vibrant capital town of Lo Manthang could only be reached on foot.

After three days of traveling over barren terrain and stopping at Buddhist sites along the route, we will arrive in Lo Manthang, also known as the Forbidden Kingdom. This city has been mostly unaffected by time and contemporary growth.

Best seasons for Upper Mustang Jeep Tour

It’s during the springtime when the natural world comes alive, with new plants sprouting up and blossoms blooming in the forests. You will be greeted with breathtaking views of the surroundings and vibrant woodlands illuminated by freshly sprouted leaves as you go around the roadways.

The spring is the ideal season for touring because of the beautiful skies, vibrant visibility, and comfortable temperature. The Tiji festival, which takes place in Lo Manthang in the middle of May, is another important reason to visit around this time of year.

In addition, autumn is regarded as one of Nepal’s greatest and busiest trekking periods. This time of year brings steady weather, bright skies, mild temperatures, and dry routes. At lower elevations, the season provides breathtaking vistas of the mountains that surround you and the chance to participate in the major Nepalese festivals of Dashain and Tihar.

Altitude Sickness

Booking a guide from an approved travel agency is mandatory by law because the hike is located in a restricted region. For the Upper Mustang Jeep trip, we have knowledgeable and certified guides on hand to offer the utmost care and assistance. A successful journey is ensured by the invaluable assistance of the guides.

By overcoming the language barrier, touring with guides promotes positive relationships with the local population. Because our trek leaders are well-known in the region, your trip will be far more fulfilling because they can impart their knowledge of the region’s geology, history, and customs. Our guides make sure that your hike is enjoyable the whole time and that it is safe, simple, and meaningful.

Accommodation, Food, and Drink

Trekkers are housed in opulent, spacious hotels in urban centers like Kathmandu and Pokhara. Throughout the tour, lodging options include guest houses, tea houses, and tents (if you want to experience them). Along the hiking path, locals operate teahouses and hostels to provide travelers with minimal lodging options.

A wonderful approach to discovering local cultures and lifestyles while taking advantage of the warm hospitality of the locals is to stay in teahouses. Luxurious amenities aren’t offered in far-off places, but you will be provided with twin-sharing accommodations with cozy beds, cozy covers, soft pillows, bed linens, and mattresses. Some locations provide the convenience of adjoining restrooms and toilets that are sanitary and clean.

In addition to Western and foreign meals, teahouses and lodges along the Upper Mustang Jeep tour serve traditional and distinctive Nepali food. During the journey, we will be responsible for providing meals three times per day. Tibetan bread, Oatmeal, cornflakes, toast, porridge with milk, and fried, boiled, or scrambled eggs are offered for breakfast with coffee or tea as per your preference.

They provide typical Nepalese cuisine for lunch and dinner, such as bhat (rice) with curries, eggs, and dal (lentils) with multiple side dishes. Bhat and Dal are excellent sources of energy that will fuel you up for the day. In addition, there are more culinary alternatives such as sandwiches, pizza, noodles, macaroni, and Thukpa.

The Upper Mustang Jeep Tour does not cover your drinking water expenses.

Transportation of Upper Mustang Jeep Tour

Every bit of land transportation required by this Upper Mustang Jeep Tour itinerary will be provided by us. You will not have to pay anything extra for them. This also includes your flight to Jomsom and back.

As for the Jeep itself, we will either be using a Land Cruiser or a Mahindra Scorpio. Both these vehicles are four-wheel drive and have high ground clearance, making them perfect vehicles to travel the rough, hilly terrain of Upper Mustang.

Permit for Upper Mustang Jeep Tour

Obtaining the necessary permissions for the Upper Mustang Tour is crucial. Before starting the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour, you must have your restricted area permission, TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) card, and entrance permits for the Annapurna Conservation Area.

Our guide will help you get all the necessary permits, and the tour package will cover all your permit expenses. Be sure to bring along a couple of photos for the permits.

Gadgets charging & Internet

For a small additional fee, you may charge your electrical gadgets in most tea shops and motels along the touring path that provide power. Up till Chale and Tsarang, electricity is readily available; after that, solar energy powers the whole community.

Additionally, they offer internet access via a WiFi router. While cellular connectivity is primarily available on the Upper Mustang touring path on clear days, the Internet is accessible up to Kagbeni and Lo Manthang for a modest fee.

In certain locations, Nepal Telecom’s mobile internet services are available up to 3G, while 2G is available in many others. On the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour, you will get to see the High Himalayan Desert’s natural beauty firsthand.

Your Extra expenses for the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour

Our Upper Mustang Jeep Tour package is not able to cover all your expenses, especially your personal expenses. These include your additional accommodation, visa fees, travel and medical insurance, tips for the guide and the porters, emergency services, and other expenses that we have not mentioned to be subject to coverage.

ATM outlets

While there are ATMs in some Upper Mustang locations, including Jomsom, Kagbeni, and Muktinath, there are only currency exchange facilities in the cities we will visit (Kathmandu and Pokhara). We advise all of our guests to take out a sufficient amount of cash and exchange it for Nepalese currency while they are staying in cities. It’s also advised that you bring additional cash when trekking.

What to expect

For those seeking excitement, the Upper Mustang is the ideal location since it offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience. In addition to the summits, Upper Mustang travel offers a unique cultural adventure. The greatest feature that most visitors appreciate about Upper Mustang is how flexible the journey is.

Upper Mustang offers lots more activities according to your interests and length of time; it’s not just about hiking. Traveling with a knowledgeable local guide is the greatest way to discover Upper Mustang.

These days, a dirt road connects the hiking trail to Upper Mustang. Previously, the locals enjoyed driving on this road for both personal mobility and the transfer of commodities. There is a lot of dust on the touring trails that connect Tsarang to Lo Manthang. The Upper Mustang Drive Tour is offered on this section of the route, and the old hiking track has been replaced by a motorable road.

Why has the Upper Mustang Area been classified as a restricted area?

The lower Mustang area is free to trek, tour, and explore around without the presence of any particular permits, but the Upper Mustang commencing from Kagbeni onwards is not and needs a specific and quite pricey restricted area permit for its uninterrupted exploration.

It is because the Upper Mustang territory is a habitat of numerous rare and threatened wildlife that are gradually thriving in the region. Such wildlife includes the snow leopard, brown bear, wild asses, Tibetan Argali, and many others.

Additionally, numerous valuable herbs grow within its jungle, such as Jimbu, Jatamansi, and Five-Fingered Herb. If tourist inflow is not regulated, the ecosystem of the area can be disrupted, which can lead to the gradual disappearance of these precious lives.

Also, Upper Mustang is surrounded by a Tibetan perimeter, so the region is vulnerable to invasion from China. Tibet itself regulates some restrictions on Western tourism, and surely, Nepal doesn’t want any conflict with China.

The locals of Upper Mustang also follow a very rare and commonly not seen culture and traditions which need to be preserved for their authenticity.

So, not to damage the region as has occurred in the Annapurna and Everest regions, the Nepal Government has put the Upper Mustang under a Restricted Category.

Difficulties of Upper Mustang Jeep Tour

Our Upper Mustang jeep tour, due to its altitude, has been rated as a Profile III moderately strenuous journey. The combination of the common beaten trail along with the bumpy road for an added thrill, the particular Tibetan-like atmosphere, brisk winds, blazing sun, cold nights, along with the average elevation occurring between 3000 and 4500 m, and the modest staying facilities make this tour a bit difficult as well as unique and exciting at the same time.

However, the continuous support from our team, the supply of powerful and robust jeeps such as Mahindra Scorpio or Land Cruiser, and the facilitation of all the logistics with the planned rest days in between will make this tour an easy journey for you.

Hill Sherpa Support During the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour 12-Day Adventure

For the complete jeep ride over both the popular beaten and paved roads, along with the bumpy dirt off-road adventure, Hill Sherpa will supply you with spacious high-roofed sturdy-built with powerful-engine 4WD vehicles such as Mahindra Scorpio or Land Cruiser.

These 4 wheel transports are designed to overcome the challenges of the rocky terrain, desert sands, and the untamed wild currents of the strong rivers.

Our licensed professional driver will be guiding you along the Upper Mustang trail, who also happens to be a competent mechanic and capable of solving any mechanical issues, may arise en route any time in the Upper Mustang Jeep tour.

Our tour guide, on the other hand, will lead you through such exciting paths that are not only safe but also interesting to keep you well motivated.

In addition, the spare parts, repair kit tools, fuels, and essential gear will also be offered by the company carried in the vehicle along with your luggage.

We also have provisions for the rescue and medical first aid kits. Plus, our guide will see to it that you will get to sleep in the finest possible lodgings in Upper Mustang.

For whom has our Upper Mustang Jeep tour been made?

The land of Upper Mustang looks like authentic Tibet, where the expansive road has already reached its farther corners. But, there are still some sections that have the dirt off beaten and not-so-common trails in the region that remain to give the adventure to its travelers.

The unsolved mysteries of the several caves here are still very intriguing, but they are gradually on the verge of disappearing. Additionally, the people here, the Lhopas, are very humble, honest, and authentic, following and believing in their own ways of life.

However, the impact of the slowly thriving tourism can be seen now in the loss of authenticity among the local youths. Thus, if you like to see what nature in its truest raw form looks like, and wish to engage with the rare customs and culture, then the Upper Mustang jeep tour 12 days adventure is for you.

With the support and comfort that we avail to you, and no involvement of longer exhaustive trekking actions, you can bring your own company of families, kids, and older adults. This can be the very alternative tour to a Tibet Tour, where the combined experience of Nepal and Tibet alike offers you a very engaging journey throughout.

We hope you will talk to your doctor if you have any cardiorespiratory problems because the Upper Mustang air, elevation, and remoteness can trigger your health condition.

Is there any need for specific training for the Upper Mustang Jeep tour?

The Upper Mustang jeep tour is mainly a mental adventure rather than a physical one. Aside from the short hikes around the Lo Manthang, there are no exhaustive long hikes involved.

Therefore, your usual activities like cycling, jogging, walking, and running will keep you fit for the short walking explorations we have planned for you.

The main thing is about your mental strength and resilience to keep up and enjoy Upper Mustang and its harsh terrain and weather. You should also be ready for its simple life and food.

We suggest you see about Upper Mustang on YouTube and see what it really means to experience its people, climate, and terrain.

Why is Travel Insurance Mandatory for the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour?

The Upper Mustang territory is notoriously harsh and unforgiving, and its remote location makes it even more challenging to access. The region lacks an advanced medical care system so in the event of any unexpected incident like an accident or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), immediate helicopter evacuation is necessary, which can be a heavy burden if you have to manage its cost alone.

In such situations, if you have travel insurance, your insurer will cover all costs of helicopter transport and evacuation. And, if you also add the medical and accident coverage, your insurer will take care of your medical expenses and accident-related costs as well.

Also, note that the presentation of your travel insurance policy paper is a must when we process the necessary permits for the Upper Mustang Jeep tour.
