Trip Overview

Discover the Hidden Kingdom on the ultimate Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour with Hill Sherpa Trekking’s Guides.

Nepal’s secret kingdom, the Upper Mustang is truly this country’s crowning jewel, and riding through these lands on a motorbike is truly an adventure of epic proportions. If you too feel the same, then we welcome you to our 12 days Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour, an exciting tale of the heights of an unsung land.

For nine days in a row, our Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour will lead you across the breathtaking vistas of the mighty Himalayas, driving past the fabled Annapurna South, Nilgiri mountain, Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, Himchuli, Tukuche peak, and Tilicho himal, (Machhapuchhre) Fishtail summits.

You will be driving on unpaved roads for nine days along which you will be spotting horse caravans, mopeds, motorbikes, rickety buses, and jeeps. You will be spending your days in this incredible region that has managed to preserve its old-world charm, uniqueness, archaeological legacy, and cultural diversity for a millennium.

In fact, Upper Mustang is a motorcyclist’s paradise for those who wish to immerse themselves in cultural richness and natural beauty.

Set against the dramatic Himalayan landscape, this north-central region of Nepal was closed to visitors until 1992 but is now considered one of Nepal’s finest trekking regions and until recently had no road access and could only be reached on foot, yak or pony trek.

It was opened to motor vehicles only in the year 2010, but it is open to a limited number of tourists each year and to gain entry, you must possess a pre-paid ticket.

The Lo Pass live in the upper Mustang, which is the region above Kagbeni from Samar, while the Gurung live mostly in the lower Mustang, which is the region close to Kagbeni. Tibetan Buddhism is the predominant religion of these people, as evidenced by the roads dotted with Tibetan prayer flags carved with sacred mantras.

You will ride the Royal Enfields through the streets of Kathmandu and Pokhara as part of our Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour. On subsequent days, you will then ride along the scenery of Kalopani, riding into the breathtaking Kali Gandaki gorge.

You will then eventually arrive at the magnificent Lo Manthang, Nepal’s only walled kingdom, after passing through the charming villages of Kagbeni and Samar.

These monasteries are timeless, with events from thousands of years ago still echoing through their walls. The Chhoser cave complex, however, is what will truly capture your heart. Despite amazing discoveries and scientific efforts, this remarkable cave system still offers insight into the region’s rich cultural history.

After that, our Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour will take you to the charming Lower Mustang, where you can visit the revered Muktinath temple, a Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage site.

From here, you can continue on to Tatopani, where you can participate in the holy purification rituals beneath the 108 natural springs. The relaxing hot spring bath at Tatopani (Hot Spring) will refresh your mind, and gear you up for the return trip to Kathmandu via scenic Pokhara.

To provide more thrills to your senses, our Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour trail also features continuous elevation ascents with the stunning Passes of 3850 m Syangboche, 4170 m Mui la, and 3900 m Tsarang Chu making this journey anything but uninteresting. Especially thrilling during autumn and spring months, this Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour is suited for adventure-craving thrill-seekers who are always looking for a physical test and already hold riding experience.

You can mount your motorcycle and head up towards the Sarangkot View Point to take in the breathtaking sunshine. Or simply enjoy a hot cup of coffee while the fresh mountain air blows through the Annapurna and Fishtail.

After breakfast, it’s time to head out in the direction of the Upper Mustang. Before making a quick stop at Kushma, we will travel a few miles along the asphalted Baglung Highway.

Here, we’ll find the world’s second-highest bungee jump and Nepal’s longest suspended bridge. We’ll now start our motorcycle engines again and head for Beni.

The asphalt road is now finished, and the real test of our abilities starts. We will have to ride over mud roads and rock slabs after the first 80 km, which will be fairly peaceful.

The path now ascends alongside the Kali Gandaki River and gets increasingly more confined for roughly 25 km until we reach Tatopani (1190 m).

At Dana, the forward track is now simple and gradually increases in elevation to 1446 meters. While the Rupse Chhahara (Waterfall) will delight our eyes, the surrounding greenery is simply breathtaking.

But the track keeps going up, quickly bringing us to Ghasa Village, which is 2012 meters above sea level. In this small Thakali community, we can enjoy the well-known Thakali Meal.

After that, we will travel to Kalopani, but first we will pass through Tukuche before arriving at our cozy Kalopani lodge.

After having breakfast, we will proceed with our Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour, which will now entail continuous adventure riding. First, we’ll drive toward Jomsom after passing the Apple city of Marpha.

The view is a powerful painting that can make even the most seasoned person gasp for air, and the air itself begins to feel more fresh. We will ride our bikes alongside the enormous Kali Gandaki and head towards Ekle Bhatti along the slope that is dotted with rocks.

The fact that Kagbeni is close by and the scenery is now genuinely dry but breathtaking gives us the willpower to press on. At the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) and special mustang permit (RESTRICTED AREA)  Checkpost on the outskirts of Kagbeni, our permits will be examined.

Once they allow us to pass, we will ascend towards Tangbe through rocky, filthy, and rough terrain. From up here, the snow-capped peak of the 7061 meters high Nilgiri appears thrilling.

We will now follow a 10-kilometer descending track that leads to Chhusang (2980 m) and Chele. We’ll push our bikes uphill once more until we get to Samar, where we’ll store them for overnight cooling.

We will begin our journey through the Mustang Kingdom and the Tibetan Highlands after waking up in the picturesque surroundings.

The road ahead is challenging, there will be rocky screes, passes, cliffs, and climbs. We must first start our engines in order to ride up to Syangboche La Pass, which is a huge elevation of 3850 meters.

After that, we’ll drive down to the quaint village of the same name, which will lead us to Ghami, which is 3520 meters away. With its winding streets, this little town is surprisingly serene and lovely.

The track rises gently past the long, expansive Mani Walls as the red and gray cliffs begin to appear. Prepare yourself for the rough track that rises sharply and vertically to Mui La Pass, which is 4170 meters above sea level.

We will then travel to Dhakmar Village, also known as Ghar Gomba, to see the Lo Ghekar Monastery, which has been restored and is well-known for its magnificent architecture and scenery.

Following this short detour, we will continue traveling along the stunning Charang Khola, which will lead us to Charang Village. The five story Dzong, which serves as both the monastery and the fort, is located in this quaint community high above the Tsarang Chu Canyon.

When we look inside, we can see a number of beautifully carved Buddha statues as well as exquisitely made thangkas. Though we are small in comparison to the vast expanse of Bhrikuti, Annapurna I, Tilicho, and Nilgiri, the surrounding landscape is more breathtaking.

We will ride north along the border road until we reach Tsarang Chu, which is 3900 meters above sea level and separates the Charang from the Kingdom of Lo. As we aim for Lo Manthang in the distance, we will soon have to traverse the windy Lo La Pass at an elevation of 3950 m.

We are currently in Lo Manthang, the fortified capital of the long lost Kingdom of Mustang, which is situated high in Nepal’s trans Himalayan region. We will spend one whole day here to absorb its deep culture, see sacred monasteries, and trace steps of history in this mystic high-altitude desert.

Our main destination day begins with the visitation of the local nomadic communities who reside in yak camps dispersed across the wind-swept plateaus. These hardy herders continue to live much as their forefathers did, and we will share a warm moment with them, tasting their customary butter tea, churned from yak’s milk, full-bodied and ceremonial.

Next, we’ll journey back in time as we tour some of Lo Manthang’s most revered monasteries (Gompas). These sacred shrines are not merely spiritual hubs but living museums of Tibetan-Buddhist art and architecture.

Champa Lhakhang – This “House of Maitreya” was built in 1420 and features a massive clay statue of the Future Buddha and ancient mandala murals.

Chode Gompa – Over 200 years old, and yet still a thriving monastic center and location of the monastic museum that breathes life into Mustang’s past.

Thubchen Gompa – Large, red-colored monastery, renowned for its towering pillars and vibrant 15th century wall paintings.

Next, we head east from Lo Manthang on a demanding 16 kilometers trek to the fascinating Chhoser Village. A minuscule Tibetan enclave in miniature, Chhoser is heaven on earth for archaeologists and those searching for the divine. It is here, hidden within the cliffs, that the historic cave dwellings, painstakingly etched by hand millennia ago, are located.

Most spectacular is the Jhong Cave (also known as Jhongu or Sky Caves), a five story cave complex reached by wooden ladders linking its narrow tunnel and secret passageways. Dating back more than 3,000 years, these caves were once used as meditation retreats, storage rooms, and even tombs.

For the hardy adventurers, there is a side trip option that takes you north to the Korra La Pass, a high-altitude Himalayan pass on the Nepal-Tibet border. The ancient trade route between Mustang and Tibet was the 4,660 meters (15,288 feet) Korra La. Today, it is a geopolitical border, but it still offers breathtaking views into the arid Tibetan plains, reminding us of the deep cultural and religious ties that once flowed so easily between these peoples.

As the sun sets behind the rocks, we make our way back to our lodge in Lo Manthang, bellies full and minds racing with the myth and drama of this lost Tibetan kingdom.

Pilgrimage to the sacred Holy place of Muktinath

The snow-capped peaks of Nilgiri, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri are bathed in golden light as dawn breaks over the Himalayas, illuminating the sky with shades of peace and wonder. Have this final panoramic embrace of the majestic skyline of the Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour before we embark on our journey down to one of Nepal’s most sacred sites.

Our Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour is challenging and rewarding, following well-traveled paths and taking us back through the enduring villages of Tsarang and Ghami. The stony gorges, ochre-hued valleys, and bleak cliffs that unfold like pages in an ancient epic never cease to amaze, even though the landscape is familiar. The trail finally takes us to the windswept town of Kagbeni, where the Kali Gandaki River cuts through the Mustang Valley.

From Kagbeni, a short but melodramatic piece of new road winds up towards Muktinath, reaching the sacred pilgrimage site in less than 30 minutes. Although more touristy than Mustang’s far-flung reaches with visitors, Muktinath has a profound spiritual appeal. Located at 3,800 meters (12,467 ft), this sacred place is a cultural and religious crossroads and is both held sacred by Hindus and Buddhists.

The main shrine of Muktinath Temple is encircled by calm Buddhist monasteries, courtyards with prayer flags flapping in the cool mountain air, and revolving prayer wheels. The temple’s 108 water spouts, which are fed by icy glacial springs and are believed to purify the soul, draw pilgrims from all over Nepal and India.

Let yourself be reflected in this tranquil haven at sunset, where majestic Himalayan grandeur and age old piety blend to create timeless beauty.

We’ll spend the day morning at Vishnu Temple which has a commanding view of the entire Muktinath town. We will also be doing the purification ceremony by doing the three circumambulatory walks around the temple under the 108 showers of cold water. We will also head towards another temple which gives a spectacular view of Annapurna.

We shall then take our Royal Enfield and ride to Jomsom along the heavenly trail. We shall proceed from there to Marpha which is not only renowned for its apples but also for its white houses.

Apples are scattered on top of these houses, dehydrating in the scorching sun. We shall possibly take a small taste of some of the local brandies, but not much, recall we have a trip to continue.

Slowly, the landscape begins to transition to much greener terrain with coniferous forests. The asphalt-widest road will again arise but it becomes more challenging as we approach Tatopani.

Having overnighted at the Tatopani lodge, we will then head out to relax in the naturally formed hot water baths.

Trip Information of Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour

Best Time for Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour

The Upper Mustang, which is protected from rain by massive Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountains, is a land of extremely Tibetan-like environment and geography. The terrain is dry and desolate, with high-elevation plateaus and cliff lines that are red and yellow.

The weather is also dry, with temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius at daytime, which suddenly drop to minus degrees at night. But it does not mean that it does not get any rain at all, it did experience a heavy flood in 2021 where thousands of citizens were displaced.

And, we must also remember that for remaining successful on a mountain bike tour to Nepal in the dry roads and trails are most important. The Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour is therefore best taken in the fall, from September to November, when the trails are usually dry and there are stunning views of the surrounding area and the towering high mountains.

Additionally, spring, which runs from March to May, is chosen by the Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour because it brings a welcome green to the previously arid region. Summer rains during July and August can, however, cut off the lower trails of Upper Mustang that lie across Annapurna.

Conversely, winter between December to February covers Upper Mustang with snow and wind, making it nearly impossible to travel through by car.

Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour Difficulty Level

Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour is physically demanding, adventurous, enjoyable, and stunningly beautiful Nepal tour. The tour can be a complete package for experienced bikers who have already taken some off-road and mountain riding tours in high altitude regions.

But for those who are inexperienced off-road bicycle tour riders, this tour will be very demanding. It is because after you leave Beni, the graveled city Highways that hitherto had been smooth will be left behind and the terrain will be a true test of your riding ability.

You will be riding mostly standing on your bicycle seat rather than sitting in a proper position. Otherwise than this, you will not have some comfortable easy to ride bicycles but mountaineering and dirt bikes that are meant for rough grounds like this one. Thus, your way of driving will be entirely different.

Moreover, the roads in Mustang are not accessible roads but rather are the paths made by the locals for themselves and cattle. Thus these paths are dotted with rocks and gorges that at times rise as high as the Passes whose elevation surpasses numerous mountains in the globe.

So our Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour can be a quite beautiful and thrilling experience, but it requires some preparation. A new rider should first practice on simpler off-road motorcycle trails before venturing on this journey.

Support & Safety

Our Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour is certainly a demanding experience but it is also an absolutely safe experience in one of Nepal’s best landscapes. We will not only take care of your logistics as your travel partner but will also take care of the safety and comfort of all our riders.

You will be provided with a well-maintained standard Royal Enfield 350 cc motorbike for the tour. Our support vehicle will also follow you through the tour with your luggage, bike spare parts, and repair tools, fuel, and the rest of our staff.

If you are fatigued with the continuous riding, you can easily ride the jeep and rest yourself as well. Secondly, our mechanic will also be with us ready to repair any of the bikes on the spot. Our knowledgeable motorbike guide, who has been approved by the Nepali government, will accompany you to provide guidance.

In contrast, the Upper Mustang region is now a complete lodge trekking and tour destination with a full stomach for the evening for all guests.

Why Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour?

Any mountain bike tour in Nepal offers you with various experiences, thrills, and the feeling of freedom. But particularly for many, the Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour is a dream come true experience.

Each day of this tour is packed with new challenges, thrilling experiences, and some refreshing moments. Undeterred by rain, wind, or heat, you will welcome your day early morning with renewed energy and ride through some of the most beautiful mountain scenery and surroundings.

With this freedom of movement, you will be able to venture into those inaccessible regions of Upper Mustang that are off-limits by bus and jeep, and where even the most daring trekkers have not dared.

However, the breathtaking Upper Mustang landscape will have you twisting, turning, climbing, and descending, adding excitement to your bike ride on the Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour.

Far from the dense masses, these single tracks of Upper Mustang by nature promise the level of exclusivity and a different kind of experience from all other treks or highway travels in Nepal.

Transportations

On our Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour, you have the option of using your own bike or the one we provide. Definitely, Upper Mustang’s mountain roads are not easy to ride so learning to handle your bike is a must.

You should know when to engage the clutches, take the turns and when to ride or dismount. When you decide to ride your own bike, then obviously you will have the freedom of moving in whatever direction you feel suitable as you are familiar with its machinery and you can easily manage any repairs.

But to import your own bike from abroad is tedious, stressful, and expensive custom formalities. In that case, you can use the magnificent, vintage Royal Enfield 350 cc bikes that we have for the Nepal mountain bike tour, which are ideal for navigating the country’s rough terrain.

It is the cheapest, most reliable, easy to repair, convenient, comfortable and negotiable motorbike with which to explore Upper Mustang with backpacks and with or without pillion rider.

Our technicians will perform a thorough inspection of our motorcycles in front of you on the second day that you are staying in Kathmandu. Then you will take the test ride around so you can travel to Pokhara the next morning.

We will also make arrangements for private vehicles for airport transportation and a sightseeing tour of Kathmandu as part of our Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour.

Crucial Details, If you intend to ship your motorcycle to Nepal for the Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour, kindly let us know its specifications so we can verify whether the right kind of technical assistance is available there.

Altitude Sickness

There is a widespread misconception that altitude sickness only occurs to hikers. In fact, drivers and bikers are more likely to experience altitude sickness quickly while riding up the altitude at a steep incline than gradually as the individuals who are engaged in trekking activities.

The dry high altitude air here is reportedly lower in oxygen than the rest of Nepal, even though the entire Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour is below 4000 meters.

So, acclimatization is very important in this trip, much more so than in other trips in Nepal. We have therefore planned a rest day in Kathmandu right after your arrival, letting your body acclimatize to the Nepali environment.

We will want to make sure that everyone is well acclimated prior to ascent because Lo Manthang is our highest point at 3,860 meters. To accomplish this, we have designed most of the ride as short, just 4 to 6 hours so you will get ample opportunity to relax.

We have also incorporated a rest day at Lo Manthang for sightseeing and further acclimatization. However, even with these measures, some of our cyclists may show physical symptoms such as insomnia, weakness, dizziness, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, rapid breathing and pulse rates, headaches, and fatigue etc.

If you also notice any of these symptoms, please let our guide know immediately. It is safest to handle the condition by descending to the lower raised area not on the bike but in the jeep with our guide.

You can also take Diamox (Acetazolamide) which will facilitate you to breathe more comfortably and relieve you of light symptoms. To encourage acclimatization, you can even take these pills prior to the start of your Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour adventure.

For prevention of altitude sickness, you can keep water with you while you are riding your bike and have small sips of it during the journey. You can also have garlic ginger lemon soup in your diet, which can be greatly helpful.

Preparation

You cannot overlook the necessary preparation for our Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour, don’t miss it’s crucial. During nine consecutive days, you will be motorcycling 4 to 7 hours a day and covering from 60 to 70 kilometers of distance.

Therefore, you should make sure that you are prepared for this challenge for which you have to design a daily exercise program to build muscular endurance for at least a month. Increase the number of repetitions and use lighter weights to lessen muscle fatigue.

Then you can travel lesser distances on your motorbikes on the city roads slowly transferring it on the off roads and ultimately taking it to the mountain roads.

Find the best posture for you by paying close attention to how your body reacts. Try to control your clutch grip and practice twists and turns in each curve.

When driving on Mustang Road, keep in mind to use caution. Make it a habit to check your bike’s tires for inflation, the clutches and brakes, and the fuel and oil levels every morning.

Don’t forget to carry a spare key on you and don’t over-speed. Stop every so often to stay awake, and stop every now and then to stretch, relax, eat, and drink.

Food/drinks & Accommodation

You will stay in well selected, three star hotels (local standard) with comfortable double beds in the heart of Kathmandu and Pokhara during our Upper Mustang Motorcycle Tour.

The accommodations while riding to Mustang will be local lodges. The accommodation is not luxurious but well idealized in the sense of being far from the main area.

Each of the rooms in the lodge will have two single beds, a mattress, pillows, and blankets. Riders will have to share either indoor or outdoor restrooms. Be reminded also that hot water for showering has an extra charge.

So far as meals are involved, breakfast will be arranged daily in Kathmandu and Pokhara, and you will be at liberty to arrange your own lunches and dinners. On your final night in Kathmandu, A separate farewell dinner has been organized for your last night in Kathmandu.

You will eat during the Upper Mustang Motorcycle Tour in a way that will allow you to travel freely and enjoy the experience. Nepali dishes such as Dal Bhat Tarkari, Thakali set dishes, Syabhale, Chowmen, momo, and minced meat noodles and pastas are some of the daily foods which you should taste.

For an average meal, it depends on your spending, but it will cost around USD 25 to 35 per day per person based on your choice.

Travel Insurance

An essential part of our Upper Mustang Motorcycle Tour is travel insurance. Without the valid policy documents, you will never receive the restricted area permit that is mandatory for the tour.

In addition, the insurance will also cover you and your bike financially in case of any medical needs, damages, breakdowns, or accidents. It will also allow you to compensate for costs incurred in relation to damage caused to your motorcycle or third parties due to your negligence or theft.

When you acquire insurance on your tour, choose a policy that includes special bikers’ conditions for protective gear and other things especially. Make sure the policy covers air rescue charges up to heights of 4,600 m.

Be careful and attentive when you read the insurance terms to observe any exclusions or limitations that may apply.

Permits for Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour

It is essential to obtain the required permissions for the Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour. You need to have your Annapurna Conservation Area entrance permits, TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) card, and restricted area permission before you can begin the Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour.

The RAP permit will help us access the exclusive areas beyond the Kagbeni Village like the Lo Manthang. We, as a registered Nepalese trek and tour company, are the only ones to apply for the permit after they organize a group tour of at least two members with a designated local tour guide. Likewise, the ACAP permit will provide us entry into areas below Kagbeni.
