Trip Overview

The Manaslu Circuit Trek 13 Days Itinerary serves as a unique adventure for trekkers looking for a remote and real Himalayan journey. It is a trek that goes around Manaslu, the 8th highest mountain in the world at 8,163m. It is positioned in the more remote part of the Manaslu region, which is relatively quiet compared to popular Treks to Everest and Annapurna base camp trek. This trek is for those trekkers who are looking for a more challenging trek, as the trek is more remote and less popular. It is, however, a very rewarding trek that provides a blend of adventure, culture, and breathtaking scenery.

The adventure starts with a drive from the capital to Machha Khola and the trek ascends the beautiful Budhi Gandaki Vale for the next several days. It is one of the most beautiful, influential and remote places in the world. The trek passes deep gorges, hand built suspension bridges and remote settlements of Jagat, Deng and Namrung. The region is covered with green hills, however, as altitude is gained vegetation is replaced with rocky cliffs, pine forests and then to the wind swept high Tibetan plateaus.

The villages of Lho, Samagaon and Samdo border the Tibetan region of the trek and are very special. They are remote but very beautiful with deep Tibetan and Buddhist culture. In Samagaon, there are slike like Manaslu Base camp and Pungyen Gompa which give breathtaking glacial and peak views. On your acclimatization day here, these are your two options.

As an option, with an extra day in Samdo, you will enjoy an outstanding day hike to the Tibetan border at Rui La Pass; see the beautiful Himalayan panoramas, and experience the ancient trans Himalayan trade routes.
Crossing Larke La Pass, at 5,160m, is the steepest part, most tiring, and the highest point of the trek. This is the most challenging day of the trek.

Stupendous views of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, and Annapurna II, surround you. The descent to Bimthang brings you back to the beautiful green pastures and into dense forests. Here, you will join the Annapurna Circuit trail and drive back to Kathmandu. To finish the 13 days Manaslu Circuit Trek, trekkers will need the Restricted Area Permit, the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP), and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). Because the Manaslu region is a restricted zone, you need to have a licensed guide.

Spring and autumn seasons, March, May, and September November respectively, offer spectacular and unobstructed views of the trails on the circuit. The Manaslu Circuit Trek 13 Days itinerary is well balanced with adequate preparation and acclimatization. It is adventurous, cultural, and wild at the same time. It becomes the most beautiful and less crowded trekking experience in Nepal.

Manaslu Circuit Trek 13 Days Itinerary

01

Drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola. It takes roughly 8 to 10 hours. The journey from Kathmandu to Machha Khola is beautiful yet rough. The ride starts simply on a paved road and continues by terraced farmland, rolling hills, and bustling towns. The road becomes bumpier the further you travel from the city.

The trip along the winding Budi Gandaki River is exhilarating. You will get to Machha Khola, a little town on the banks of a river, after driving through cities like Dhading, Arughat, and Soti Khola. It is hidden away in hills covered in trees. This is your first chance to properly appreciate how beautiful the Manaslu region is from a distance.

Leaving Jagat, you cross a number of rivers, a stone staircase, and charming villages like Salleri, Sirdibas, and Philim. Along the way, the terraced millet fields add to the beauty of the landscape. As the path enters a steep canyon, it becomes much narrower. Several times, you will cross suspension bridges and stroll through thickets of bamboo while the river thunders below. As you advance, the environment becomes wilder and more remote. One last steep climb brings you to Deng, a little town that sits on a hill, above the river and encircled by dense forest and misty mountains. It is a pleasant and lonely place to spend the night.

You can visit Manaslu Base Camp, 4,800 meters above sea level. It is a hard and satisfying climb that pays off with breathtaking views of Manaslu and the glaciers. If you prefer, you can take a leisurely walk to Pungyen Gompa, a lovely monastery tucked away amidst a valley with views that stretch for miles. Today, you approach the Tibetan Border. The empty hills filled with Yaks slowly raise to the East. The Ground is barren and lifeless – with little trees to soften the blow the landscape seems empty, lifeless, and abandoned. The barren landscape becomes beautiful as you approach the mani walls. After the mani walls you cross the livestock of the little Tibetan hamlet, Samdo. The hamlet is tranquil and private, sheltered by the high hills and filled with quiet, profound valleys.
Consider taking in the outstanding scenery, as the journey is not demanding.

Another important day adjusting to the weather before Larkya La Pass, though this one is not essential to the schedule. If you are feeling up to it, you could hike the Samdo Peak (approx 5,100m) for remarkable views of the Manaslu range and far more. Alternatively, you could travel along one of the old trade routes used by salt merchants to the Tibetan border viewpoint. Either of these hikes treats you to stunning views of the mountains and allows your body to prepare for the challenging high-altitude crossing up ahead. Sip on some more fluids and relax for the remainder of the day in Samdo.

It takes 8 to 10 hours to hike to Bhimthang across Larke Pass (5,106m). Today is the most exhilarating part of the trek. Leaving early today, usually before dawn, you will complete the long walk to the Larkya La Pass (5,106m) for the last part of the trek.

This starts with a long gradual climb, usually through snow at the higher elevations, and the spectacular views of the Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, and Annapurna II. After a rest at the pass and some victory photographs, the views, and the long walk down to the Bhimthang valley will begin. It is a long walk down rocky and snowy passes and the valley is a welcome site. It is a long day, and for the most part, a rewarding hike.

The trek from Bhimthang to Dharapani (1,960m) takes 7 to 8 hours. After yesterday’s trek, this is certainly a great relief. The walk goes past rhododendron trees, alpine streams, and the lovely towns of Gho and Tilije. The descent is through low hills, and the air is warmer and the ground greener. After the Marsyangdi River, you arrive at the vibrant, Annapurna Circuit-linked Dharapani. It is your final real world ament to you and your hike.

Trip Information of Manaslu Circuit Trek 13 Days

Why Is Manaslu Circuit Trekking Restricted?

Manaslu Circuit Trek 13 days is considered a restricted region due to its closeness to the border with Tibet (China) and the need to protect its unique culture heritage. This area contains ancient villages that are profoundly influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. These villages are much older and ancient than anything that has been westernized. The older the villages, the more primitive the cultural practices.

Thus, the government of Nepal has a duty to protect the sensitive ecosystem, provide safety to the trekkers and encourage responsible tourism by limiting all trekkers to special restricted permits enclosed with a properly licensed tour guide. This ensures the restricted region maintains its integrity.

Optimal Seasons for the 13 Days Manaslu Circuit Trek

Autumn (September through November) and spring (March through May) are the most favorable periods for the 13 Days Manaslu Circuit Trek. Autumn is the most popular trekking season, with consistent weather, clear skies, and spectacular views of the mountains.

Spring, however, is noted for the warmer temperatures and green, blooming vegetation, especially the rhododendron flowers, which enhance the trekking experience for nature enthusiasts. The monsoon season, June through August, is characterized by heavy rains, muddy and dangerous paths, and the risk of landslides. Winter (December through February) is extremely cold with heavy snowfall, especially over the high passes such as Larke La Pass.

Trek Difficulty Level

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is classified as moderate to challenging, taking into consideration the isolated terrain, prolonged trekking intervals, and the high altitude Larke La Pass (5,160m) crossing. The trek does not involve technical climbing and the key challenge lies in the 5 to 8 hour walks, over varying and rugged landscapes, steep climbs, and unpredictable weather. The basic lodgings and limited support also increases the psychological and physical challenge of the trek. As such, the trek should only be attempted by people with good physical condition.

Is it possible for a newcomer to join us for the trek?

Absolutely, motivated and physically fit newcomers are welcome for the Manaslu Circuit Trek 13 Days, mainly if they are well prepared and are positive for the challenge. While it cannot be classified as a trek for beginners, there are no technical climbs as most first timers trek it successfully with the help of a professional guide, proper acclimatization, and steady pace. To aid newcomers to the trek, our itinerary includes rest days in Samagaon and Samdo, where they can adjust to the altitude and pace of the trek.

It is best for first time trekkers to develop the stamina for the trek beforehand mentally and be prepared for positive changes.

Acute mountain sickness (AMS)

AMS represents a serious risk on the Manaslu trek because of the significant elevation gain, especially over 3,000 meters. The most common symptoms of AMS include headaches, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath. To counter the risk posed by AMS, the GHT has adopted a well structured approach whereby trekkers are provided with a well structured itinerary that includes steep gradient adjustments and acclimatization days set for Samagaon and Samdo before most trekkers attempt the high Larke La Pass.

It is always important for trekkers to practice the recommended guidelines which include regular hydration, well-balanced food, and the immediate reporting of any AMS symptoms. The guides have been properly trained in management of altitude sickness and have the necessary equipment which includes portable oxygen, altitude sickness medications like Diamox, and general first aid, which are meant to give emergency aid.

Preparation and training

In preparation to enjoy and complete the 13 Days Manaslu Circuit Trek comfortably and safely, a trekker has to undergo significant preparation for the walk. The preparation for the walk takes 13 days and the walk to Samdo is always a major fitness challenge that every trekker has to contend with. To prepare for an efficient and lasting walk, a trekker has to prepare for 6-8 weeks prior to the walk. There is the need to prepare for the psychological, and the emotional, and mental challenges. The walk requires every trekker to acclimatize to basic requirements that may be difficult to manage.

Alternate Paths and Extensions to the Manaslu Circuit Trek

For those looking to discover the other side of the Manaslu Circuit, there are plenty of alternatives to explore the splendors of the Manaslu region and the rest of the Himalayas in Nepal. A popular addition is the Tsum Valley Trek, which extends the Manaslu Trek. This addition deepens the hiker’s cultural and spiritual connections with the hike.

Tsum Valley is home to ancient monasteries, caves, and Tibetan speaking communities, and is regarded as a sacred Himalayan pilgrimage valley. You can also add the Annapurna Circuit as another extension of your trek, wherein you would continue either from Dharapani or Besisahar. This option is nice to add cultural and geographical variety. These extensions can stretch your trek to about 18 to 20 days, which can be recommended for experienced trekkers.

Accommodation and Dining Options

On the 13 days of Manaslu Circuit Trek, you will be staying in the local teahouses which are simple lodges, all of which are managed by the village families. There are no frills and rooms typically consist of twin beds, communal bathrooms and minimal heating.

The facilities are more primitive in higher altitudes, but the landscape is gorgeous and the people are hospitable and friendly. The eating places do provide bare bones, yet healthy food. The most common dish is the dal bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables), which will be served with noodles, soup, pancakes, eggs, and local bread. The higher you elevate, the lower will be the variety of food you are offered and the prices will be high because of the transportation challenge. As such, you are advised to come with snacks and water purification tablets.

Transportion

The journey starts with a drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola, which takes around 8-9 hours, depending on how the roads are. Especially after Arughat, the roads can be a bit bumpy and rough, which is why 4WD jeeps are more common. After the trek, you will drive from Dharapani to Besisahar and back to Kathmandu by jeep or tourist bus. Since there are no flights on this trek, you should note that there could be delays and road blockages due to landslides or severe weather. Therefore, it is recommended to keep 1-2 buffer days in your travel plans.

Travel Insurance

Adequate travel insurance is a necessity for anyone trekking the Manaslu circuit. for the Manaslu Circuit. Your insurance should include high altitude trekking (up to 6000 meters), emergency helicopter evacuation, trip cancellation, medical treatment, and cover loss and theft of personal belongings. High altitude trekking is not included in many standard insurance plans, so be sure to check with your provider and consider specialist providers like World Nomads or IMG. Having the right travel insurance is crucial as helicopter rescues become very costly, so it helps to have proper insurance in place to provide peace of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

For its close proximity to the border with Tibet, and its unique cultural sensitivities, the area was designated as a restricted trekking zone.
The cultural and anthropological characteristics of the border communities include Tibetan ancestry, language, and spiritual practices. To safeguard its ethno cultural and eco-sensitive attributes, the trekking zone is carefully regulated by the Government of Nepal. The trekkers hold restricted area permits and have to be guided by a licensed operator of a registered trekking agency. This is to guarantee eco-sensitive trekking and to ensure the trekkers’ safety.

Yes, the Government of Nepal requires every traveler, without exception, to have a licensed guide for the Manaslu Circuit Trek. In addition, the restricted area permit requires at least two trekkers in a group (solo trekking is not allowed in this region).

This is for the trekkers’ safety and to control the number of tourists in this area of Nepal. In addition to being responsible for the safety of your group and navigation, your guide offers important cultural insights, manages the logistics, and provides emergency support.

For the Manaslu Circuit trek, 3 permits are required. First, the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP) is required to access the restricted section between Jagat and Samagaon. Second, you need the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP) which goes to the region’s conservation initiatives.

Lastly, since the trek finishes in the Annapurna region, the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) is also required. These permits need to be acquired through a government-registered trekking agency, and they need to be carried at all times for inspection at the relevant checkpoints.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek 13 days can be done in the best seasons, which are the fall (September to November) and spring (March to May). The weather is dry and stable in fall giving the finest mountain views.

The spring with the moderately warm weather is an excellent choice as well since the hilly areas will be green, full of rhododendrons as well as alpine flowers. During the monsoon period (June to August) hiking is strongly disapproved because of the heavy rains, trail mudslides as well as land erosion.
Winter (December – February) is also an attractive season, however, the weather is harsh, and it is snowed in Larke La Pass as well as sub-zero temperatures below zero.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is of moderate to strenuous difficulty level. It is a 13 day trek but this does not include technical climbing. However, you will need to spend long hours (6-8) walking each day, navigating through rough trails, and crossing highly elevated places like Larke La Pass (5,160m).

The remoteness of the path also makes it more difficult due to the scarce infrastructure. It is important that the trekkers are both physically and mentally strong to meet the high-altitude walking and trail challenges. Safe and enjoyable high-altitude experiences require proper acclimatization and pacing, along with a strong support team.

Absolutely. Individuals who have proper training and are of good physical shape, who are first time trekkers, will be capable of doing the Manaslu Circuit Trek in 13 days.

The experiences in this hike are hard, but through the proper training and attitude, it can be attained. It has a particular itinerary with acclimatization days established in Samagaon and Samdo. This is so as to assist the trekkers adapt to change of altitude and occurrence of altitude illness. To the non trekker, it will be alright since he will have a professional trained guide and a porter with good trekking infrastructure.

The most significant factors that will lead to success will be good training long before the trek and positive mental position.

Altitude sickness, which is commonly known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), can be of concern to altitude trekkers above 3000 meters. AMS consists of headaches, nausea, and fatigue in addition to a loss of appetite and panting. If untreated AMS worsens and can become HAPE or HACE.

On the Manaslu Circuit AMS will be avoided with gradual ascend with rest and acclimatization days with good hydration. All of our guides have been trained to watch for the early signs of altitude sickness. They carry first aid kits with altitude sickness meds, which is also known as diamox, and oxygen they can use in a need of a severe symptom.

The most effective treatment of severe altitude sickness is immediate descent.

During the Manaslu Circuit, you will stay in simple teahouses. Warm beds and private bathrooms will be the exceptions to the accommodations you stay in, and you will be sharing bathrooms with other travelers. Limited bathroom facilities and little heating will add to the uncomfortableness in the higher altitudes.

Each meal will be basic but filling, and the staple trekking meal of dal bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables) will be served, as it is needed for the sustained energy to trek. Other meal options will be some variation of noodles, soup, fried rice, pasta, pancakes, eggs, and Tibetan bread. As you ascend, the options will be less and the prices higher. For added comfort, carrying energy snacks, chocolate bars, and instant noodles is advisable.

Starting training 6 to 8 weeks before your trek will be the most beneficial, and cardiovascular training will give the most added benefit.

Cross training with some of the other recommended activities of hiking, running, stair climbing, cycling, and swimming will help with leg and core strengthening. Resistance training and hiking with a loaded backpack will help simulate trekking conditions and prepare your muscles for the long walking, as well as help with mental preparation.

The journey to the start point of the trek is done by road transport. The trip takes about 8-9 hours to reach Machha Khola and is dependent on the road conditions. It is advisable to use 4WD vehicles for the rough and variable weather roads.

After finishing the trek at Dharapani, the next leg is also done by jeep to Besisahar, where you then continue the trip to Kathmandu. This is usually done by private transport which is part of the trekking package. Public transport can be used, but it is often unreliable and does not provide the required comfort.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek 13 days will need travel insurance, which has to cover emergency medical treatment and air evacuation to 6,000m high. Trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost luggage, and theft should also be covered in your insurance.

The reasons why the insurance is necessary include remoteness and high risks associated with the trekking at high altitudes where the helicopter rescue will be very expensive. The trekking agencies will need safety and liability insurance that offers them some sense of security.

Certainly. The Manaslu Circuit Trek may be extended by 5-7 days to include the Tsum Valley, a side valley known for its cultural richness, ancient Buddhist monasteries, and isolation. Another widely sought-after extension is to trek to the Annapurna Circuit by following the trail beyond Dharapani. Such extensions are suited for those trekkers who look for more remote and lesser-explored Himalayan areas and landscapes.
