Trip Overview

Upper Dolpo Trek – Journey into Nepal’s Hidden Shangri La

Upper Dolpo Trek is a unique and isolated Himalayan adventure that has mostly been termed as the real Shangri-La of the Himalayas. Located deep within Nepal on the far northwestern side between the great Dhauligiri range and the high Tibetan Plateau, Upper Dolpo is one of the final untouched trekking sites in the world. This secret land has got dramatic sceneries, ancient Tibetan culture, sacred monasteries, crystal clear lakes and memorable wilderness experience off the trekking busy trails.

It is believed that this holy land was blessed by Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) and made a spiritual sanctuary for ardent Buddhists. The region is still very important religiously, and centuries-old monasteries, prayer walls, chortens, and secluded settlements still uphold the ancient traditions that have hardly changed over several generations.

The Trekking in Upper Dolpo is indeed a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This is a very remote part of the mid-western Nepal, which is one of the least visited areas in the Himalayas, and the landscapes are still raw, wild and naturally untamed. It is the remoteness of the area that makes it very appealing. There are no other trekkers in the Upper Dolpo, unlike the other equally popular trekking spots like the Everest or Annapurna region. Hence, this makes the area a perfect choice for the trekker who wants to experience a pure off-the-beaten-path Himalayan adventure.

This enigmatic area had been closed to external visitors for many years. Indeed, trekkers until 1989 were not allowed to access the Upper Dolpo region. Due to this extended isolation, the land, culture and the traditional way of life have been so well taken care of. Few geographers, anthropologists and even explorers had ever visited this region before. Even today, special permits are needed, and this assists in preserving its unique heritage and delicate environment.

The landscape of the Upper Dolpo Trek is just spectacular. The spectacular Dhaulagiri massif (8,167m) and the range of the Churen Himal dominate the eastern and southern skyline. The trekkers are gifted with the beautiful scenes of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Kanjiroba and other snow-covered mountains in the high passes and open valleys of Dolpo. The juxtaposition of barren high altitude terrain, rocky cliffs, and white mountains makes up a very dramatic Himalayan view.

The beautiful Shey Phoksundo Lake is one of the biggest attractions of the trek, an extremely beautiful and clean alpine lake in Nepal. This is a surreal place, with its deep turquoise blue water, steep rocky cliffs and snow-capped mountains. The calmness of the lake leaves all the visitors speechless and is usually regarded as one of the best natural marvels of Nepal.

The area of Upper Dolpo is also culturally rich and very spiritual. Small villages are located in the high valleys, and their inhabitants continue to live an ancient life that has its roots in Tibet. The settlements are located at the highest levels in the world, as many of them are located above 4,000 meters. Life here is very slow and, according to centuries-old traditions influenced by the severe mountain environment.

It is one of the few regions where there are still practises of the ancient religion of Bon pre-Buddhist spiritual practice. The Bon culture has continued to be entrenched in local beliefs and rituals, and the monastery life alongside Tibetan Buddhism. By exploring ancient monasteries like Shey Gompa, commonly referred to as the spiritual heart of Dolpo, trekkers can get an uncommon glimpse into one of the oldest surviving spiritual traditions in the Himalayas.

In addition to the landscapes and culture, Upper Dolpo is also a place of heaven for wildlife lovers. The lonely valleys and the high mountains are the habitat of the rare Himalayan species such as blue sheep, Himalayan mountain goats, musk deer, snow leopard, Himalayan langurs, and numerous species of high altitude birds. The wild Dolpo offers an outstanding opportunity to observe the rare mountain wildlife in its natural environment.

The other notable aspect of the Upper Dolpo Trek is that it is possible to do it during the summer monsoon. Dolpo is a rain-shadow region as the monsoon clouds passing through the Bay of Bengal are blocked by the Dhaulagiri mountain ranges and other mountain ranges, resulting in very low rainfall in Dolpo. This has made it one of the most suitable trekking destinations in Nepal during the summer seasons when the other trekking regions in the country receive a lot of rain.

Colourful alpine flowers like edelweiss, orchids, campanulas, and forget-me-nots make the high meadows and valleys lively, and make the already amazing scenery even more beautiful during the trekking season. The Upper Dolpo Trek is more than just a mountain walk. It is an expedition into an unseen realm that practically lacks a sense of time. Whether it is traversing the mountain ranges and touring the far-off towns and villages, or it is the journey of encountering the ancient history and spiritual harmony, in every step of this hiking adventure, wonder and a closeness to nature are there.

In the case of Hill Sherpa Trekking and Expeditions, this remarkable adventure is well designed so as to offer the best adventure and cultural experience, spirituality and Himalayan wilderness. The Upper Dolpo is one of the best trekking experiences that one can ever have in Nepal. Therefore, trekkers need to consider this trek as a unique and memorable experience. When one is willing to compromise a bit on distance, another great alternative that should be considered is the Lower Dolpo Trek, which, nevertheless, provides stunning scenery and culture.

The trail starts after breakfast in Dunai and goes westward, crossing a suspension bridge over the river. Starting here, the path slowly turns northwards along the valley at the meeting point of the Thuli Bheri and Suli Gad rivers. The sound of running water accompanies the walk, and there is a sense of tranquility throughout the walk. The path gradually climbs through terraced fields where farmers grow millet, potatoes, pumpkins and even marijuana plants, and you can have a close glimpse of the rural mountain life.

As you continue the riverside trail, you will cross through small villages and enter the village of Hanke, which is the gateway to the Shey Phoksundo National Park. Here, the path is more picturesque and a little more isolated as one goes farther into Dolpo land. Then you will go through Rahagaon and Parela, which are uniquely named villages that interestingly depict sections of the human eye, including the eye, eyelashes, and eyebrows, which brings an added cultural touch to the journey.

The hike then takes you on woody paths and easy climbs until you eventually arrive at Ankhe. It is a peaceful village with a quiet resting spot and natural beauty, where you will spend your night and get ready to proceed with the adventure of the next day into Dolpo.

Once you have eaten an early breakfast in Ankhe, the path starts to become more remote and adventurous, as you venture further into Dolpo territory. The trail starts with a slow ascent uphill through a narrow and even steep part of the trail. You will soon pass across a well-built bridge over a shrinking river, and the commencement of a more rugged Himalayan landscape.

Here, the path proceeds in a succession of ups and downs, along the river gorge some distance, then slowly rises once more. The path is less busy and more remote, with less habitation and more natural wild nature around. On your journey, you will go through thick woodlands, rocky trails, and little cliffy areas, and this will provide you with a real adventure in the pristine nature.

You can also make rest stops at scenic areas to view the dramatic valley scenery, deep river gorges and snow-covered mountains in the distance. The ever-present sound of the river going down contributes a lulling rhythm to the undesirable landscape.

With the speed and weather, there might be an appropriate camping or resting place close to the Suli Gad River, where trekkers can take a break and relax in the peaceful atmosphere of the region. At last, after 6 or 7 hours’ walk, you will come to Renje, a small village, with very pretty natural scenery all around, where the night will be spent, in preparation for the next portion of the journey, farther into Dolpo.

Following a very early breakfast at Renje, the trek resumes to one of the greatest attractions of the whole trek, the Phoksundo Lake. Starting on a soft trail, the first few hours are easier as you stroll through serene conditions through the river valley. Slowly, the slope begins to shift as you come closer to Sumdo, and then there is a sharp descent followed by a difficult climb towards a ridge at about 3,875 meters.

On this peak, you enjoy a spectacular view of the blue waters of the Phoksundo Lake and the spectacular scene of the highest waterfall of Nepal, which falls almost 300 meters off the cliffs. It has been dubbed as one of the most stunning perspectives in the Dolpo region.

The trail, having seen the views, turns down through gorgeous birch woods, which present a pleasant change of scene. You will proceed to the Phoksundo Khola, then on to the beautiful village of Ringmo. It is a traditional settlement with houses made of mud-plaster, decorated chortens, and long mani walls, which depict the rich Tibetan Buddhist culture of the area. The village is vivid and inviting and encircled by beautiful nature.

Ringmo is a short and picturesque stroll to the banks of Phoksundo Lake. In this case, you will camp where the lake has crystal-clear waters, with towering cliffs and snow-capped mountains. It is one of the most memorable of the whole journey, as the spiritual atmosphere and the quietness make this one of the most memorable overnight stays.

The route leads after breakfast by the quiet Phoksundo Lake, and then along the most dramatic and adventurous part of the entire journey in the Dolpo, the upper part. The trail starts over a narrow path along the cliffside, with wooden walkways neatly laid on the rock faces, held by the traditional wooden pegs. It provides excitement and amazing views of the deep valley and turquoise lake beneath on this exposed trail.

As the journey continues, the trail gradually climbs upward, reaching a high point of around 4,040 meters. It is the Himalayan view that opens beautifully at this height, and that shows wild cliffs and snowy mountains far off in the distance, and the wild Dolpo valley.

The path then drops gradually down into the valley after a delightful view of the high mountains, and towards the shores of the Phoksundo Khola. The road to the valley is made through rocky formations and isolated scenery, slowly changing from high cliffs to a more open valley of the river.

In the course of 5-6 hours of walking, you will reach Phoksundo Khola, where a serene camp is established close to the river. This is an ideal place to relax and take a break before moving to the next leg of the trek further into the Dolpo wilderness, with the raw nature and calming effect of flowing water.

After breakfast, the trail heads north into a remote glacier valley with a steady and demanding ascent. It gets narrower and steeper, and you pass by dramatic cliffs, rocky terrain, river crossings and an ancient wooden bridge between mountain streams. There are areas where short barefoot river crossings may be necessary, depending on water conditions.

The path then proceeds through a narrow valley to the high alpine pastures where, in summer, the yaks and sheep graze. A long and difficult hike will take us here to Phoksundo Bhanjyang, with panoramic vistas into the nearby Himalayan wilderness and the path to Kang La Pass.

There again, you will pitch camp in this high mountain pass, and sleep at night in a quiet and solitary alpine spot.

It is one of the most difficult and the most rewarding days of the whole Upper Dolpo journey. The path starts early in the morning at Phoksundo Bhanjyang and leads to Kang La Pass with a challenging and steep climb. The ascent is a strenuous one, and the journey higher and higher into a bleak alpine world where the air gets thin and the landscape gets more dramatic.

After a few hours of continuous climbing, you will be on top of the Kang La Pass at an altitude of approximately 5,150 meters. This point is paid off with a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding snow-covered mountains, deep valleys, and the entire wild Dolpo. It is among the most unforgettable perspectives of the trek and one of the highlights of the trek.

The trail then leads down into a steep and rocky valley after some time at the pass. It is a steep path that must be taken cautiously, with care, as it descends sharply to the lower country. The landscape becomes softer as you come near the valley floor, where it is more open and serene.

You will arrive at the holy place of Shey Gompa after a gradual downward stroll of 6 or 7 hours altogether. At this spiritual place, there is a towering red chorten that greets you amidst silent mountains and ancient energies. Passing over a little bridge will bring you to the monastery grounds, and there you will pitch your tent in the Shey Gompa and sleep after a hard and exhausting day in the high Himalayas.

We are taking the day off to relax, explore, and learn the culture of one of the most sacred spiritual places of the upper Dolpo. Shey is the Tibetan word that signifies crystal, and this whole area is commonly known as the crystal mountain area because of its spiritual significance and uncontaminated mountain atmosphere.

The monastery of Shey Gompa is several centuries old and was thought to be built in the 11 th century. It has been a significant pilgrimage place to the local villagers, as well as monks residing in this distant part of the Himalayas. When you go to the monastery, you can be blessed by the resident Lama, and this will be a very spiritual experience for your trip.

On the exploration, you may also hike to the adjacent Tsakang Gompa, which is west of Shey Gompa. This ancient cave abbey used to be a meditation retreat of Buddhist monks and lamas in medieval times, and still possesses a strong sense of solitude and spirituality.

The harmonious co-existence of Tibetan Buddhism and the ancient Bon Po, which is one of the oldest pre-Buddhist religions of the Himalayas, is also one of the most distinctive features of the land. This cultural harmony is seldom seen, and it gives Shey Gompa a very mystical feel that has remained untouched by time.

During the afternoon, you could go to the valleys around the areas, stroll in the quiet sceneries and rest and relax in the quiet Himalayan ambiance. The entire area offers a perfect balance of spirituality, culture, and natural beauty before continuing the journey deeper into Dolpo.

After leaving Shey Gompa, the juniper forests ascend on either side of the trail, which then breaks out into a rugged rocky canyon. The climbing of the Saldang La Pass involves several steep and challenging segments. Emerging from Saldang La Pass (4,785m) offers endless panorama views of the Mustang region and its rocky and dry landscape.

Then, the trail descends towards, and north of, a long, remote valley which may attract yaks and nomadic tents. After passing through, the terrain descends towards and levels closer to Namduna Gaon on follow-up yaks and Nomads.

Namduna Gaon is a small community village combining terraced barley fields and stone houses. These, and the neighbouring high cliff, house of Namgung Monastery, which is striking, and provides a peaceful atmosphere relative to the high pace of Dolpo.

Above the pass, the trail winds through a beautiful highland landscape with rugged, sweeping views of the high Trans-Himalaya. Leaving the valley of Namjung, you start to descend. The trail continues to cross rocky ridges and open hills and traverses some of the highest areas you will encounter on the whole trek. Occasionally, you may observe terraced fields far below where the locals manage to grow crops amidst the extreme conditions of the mountains.

From the high open ridges, you descend toward the valley floor and start to climb again toward Saldang. Saldang is situated on a wide upland above the Nam Khong Nala River, with dry, Tibetan-style hills surrounding it.

Saldang is the largest village in the region, offering visitors a glimpse into the high Tibetan settlements. Saldang is known widely for its stone houses and an ancient and unchanged lifestyle. This is a quiet and serene part of Upper Dolpo.

Trip Information of Upper Dolpo Trek 24 Days

Best Season

The trek is best during the late spring (May-June) and late summer to autumn (late August to October) periods, which offer the best weather for trek through the high Himalayas. Most trekking routes in Nepal can expect to have rain during the summer months. Upper Dolpo is unique in that it is located in a rain-shadow zone which lies directly behind Dhaulagiri. With this geography, the summer months can still offer dry trails, vibrant blooming alpine flowers, and a local life with high activity in the high valleys.

Difficulty Level

The Upper Dolpo trek is a true test of one’s trekking ability as it is physically the most demanding trek, characterized by very long walking days with steep ascents, descents, and many high passes that go above 5,000 meters. Facilities in the area are scarce, and there are no official amenities. Many reasons make this trek exclusive to individuals who are highly skilled in trekking and are in terrific shape: high altitude ascents, edgy paths, and extreme weather. Strong mental and physical capabilities are essential to continue. Ample acclimatization makes the difference in a trek like this.

Can Beginners Join This Trip?

The Upper Dolpo Trek was purposely designed to be remote and at higher altitudes, so it is not a trek intended for complete beginners. The trek is better suited for seasoned trekkers who have participated in hiking trips that have gone over 4,000 meter elevation. Highly motivated beginners have the chance to join the trek if they are sufficiently fit and have an adequate mindset and motivation. While Less seasoned trekkers may accompany, they must be prepared and sufficiently acclimated to the terrain in accordance with a supported and planned itinerary. An adventurous trek may be accomplished with the right resources and preparation along the way.

Why Choose the Upper Dolpo Trek?

Upper Dolpo Trek is one of the most distinctive trekking routes in the Himalayas, with a trifecta of remote trekking, breathtaking landscapes, and the preservation of ancient culture. Most trekking routes have a bustling atmosphere, whilst Upper Dolpo provides the experience of walking on ancient pathways, unchanged by the passage of time.

Upper Dolpo Trek is one of the most culturally and spiritually rich trekking routes in the world. Upper Dolpo is rich with spirituality in the forms of Tibetan Buddhism and the ancient Bon religion. A large influence of Tibetan culture can be experienced in the region, along with the coexisting spiritual practices of Tibetan Buddhism and Bon religion. For this reason, sites such as Shey Gompa have ancient monasteries and spiritual practices, from rituals to beliefs, that offer trekkers a fascinating and enlightening experience.

The trek is also famous for having unpredictable highs and lows, both in terms of topography and weather, including the breathtaking Shey Phoksundo Lake. However, with its stunning turquoise waters and diverse age-rich culture preserved, trekking through high passes such as Kang La, deep valleys, desolate deserts, snow-covered mountains, cliffs, and high deserts. The Dhaulagiri mountains surround Upper Dolpo.

The reason for Upper Dolpo Trek’s remoteness is for spiritual preservation rather than exclusivity. Therefore, the number of trekkers and the high cost of trekking permits are a mere formality. With nature, the village’s ancient lifestyle (including spirituality, preservation of ancient culture, and spiritual practices) and the hiking paths to oneself, there are very few, if any, crowds.

And this trek brings out a true sense of adventure and discovery. Crossing high mountain passes above 5,000 meters and wandering through valleys and settlements that time has almost forgotten, each day of the trek feels like an expedition in the wilds of the last uncluttered zones of the Himalayas. It is beyond a trek, beyond the ordinary into the exceptional.

Maximum / Minimum Walking Hours per Day

When doing the Upper Dolpo Trek, trekking hours are subject to shifting terrain, altitudes, and how the hiking routes are formed. Generally, you’ll be hiking for 5 to 7 hours per day since this is considered the norm for trekking. On easier sections of the trek, it’ll be as little as 4 to 5 hours. That means you’ll have more time for things like resting, exploring, or even letting your body acclimatize.

But on tougher sections of the route, like when you’re ascending the Kang La or the Saldang La, it may be as much as 7 to 8 hours of hiking. On these routes, things like how bad the weather is and how difficult the trail is may affect how fast you’re able to hike. These are usually really steep sections where you’ll have to be going up and down a lot while making sure that you’re moving slow and really careful.

Don’t worry too much, though. The trek is well thought out, and it strikes a good balance with sections that are both moderate and a bit challenging. It’ll allow you to acclimatize while being able to enjoy the views and cultures that you encounter.

Difficulty Level

Upper Dolpo is perhaps the most difficult trekking route in the entire Nepal region, as the whole trek is filled with an entire week of countless days of trekking, reaching durations of 5-7 hours, traversing rocky, uneven, and distant paths. Trekkers face highly steep and difficult paths of their choosing, with the additional need to cross numerous high-altitude passes, some of which include Kang La at 5,150m, and Saldang La at 4,785m. And as if that weren’t enough, on top of the aforementioned issues, inclement and uncooperative weather, along with high altitude conditions, is an additional obstacle.

Upper Dolpo’s difficult conditions are a result of the remote location and the lack of infrastructure. Unlike the Everest or Annapurna trekking routes, the Upper Dolpo region has an extremely limited number of teahouses, many of which necessitate the need for camping for the night. Not only are the trails poorly constructed and sometimes exposed, but they also require a high level of endurance and balance. All of these conditions increase the trek’s level of difficulty, causing the trek to be able to only be feasible for highly experienced trekkers with a high level of fitness, as well as a wealth of experience at high altitudes.

Acclimatization

As all extremely high-altitude trekking routes are filled with high altitude conditions, without the proper protection and the appropriate pre-planned route, the Upper Dolpo Trek will be an extremely high-risk trek for all those who attempt to cross it. Trekkers will run a high likelihood of suffering from high altitude sickness. Fortunately, the risk accompanying high-altitude routes can be mitigated to an extent by a route that limits the elevation gain and builds incline breaks into the route, as well as the proper protection and gear for the trek.

Trekkers are generally advised to ‘climb high, sleep low’ and to keep a steady and calm pace, while remaining well hydrated at all times. Trekkers also need to be able to identify. Among these symptoms, a significant number are life-threatening, if not all. Therefore, a proper support team combined with a highly experienced guide, along with a highly effective and appropriate alternate route, is just as important as the protection and gear for the trail. You can appreciate the beauty and culture of Upper Dolpo with the right preparation, acclimatization, and flexible schedules.

Accommodation, Food & Drinks – Upper Dolpo Trek

Accommodation

During the Upper Dolpo Trek, camping is the primary mode of accommodation. Upper Dolpo is one of the most isolated trekking regions of Nepal, and the area has restricted lodging amenities. Alongside the trekking route, proper teahouses are absent, and the only option is organized camping. Arrangements include camping tents, sleeping pads, dining and kitchen tents, and experts to coordinate the camping, all inclusive in the trekking package.

Somewhere in the lower villages, such as Dunai and the vicinity of Lake Shey Phoksundo, you may find localized, less sophisticated accommodation options. Still, these lodges are not designed to suit groups. For these reasons, the majority of trekking nights are spent in spritely camping locations surrounded by the naturally beautiful and serene Himalayas, and the untouched mountains.

Food

Food on the Upper Dolpo Trek is prepared fresh each day for the entire group by a catering team. In remote regions, food and fuel are designed to provide trekkers with a sufficient reserve for extended walks. Breakfast can range from porridge, Tibetan bread, pancakes, and eggs, to a cup of a hot beverage.

Lunch and dinner provide a larger helping, and can contain rice, lentils (dal), some variety of vegetables, and noodles and pastas, and can be complemented by a broth or soup. Often, simpler regional local meals can be prepared to provide a sample of dishes from the world of Himalayan food. Some regional habits and customs can pose a challenge to extended trekking, but balanced meals prepared with the proper ingredients can help trekkers adapt and overcome them.

Drinks (Tea, Coffee, and Hot Water)

As part of the all-inclusive set of services, trekkers are provided with hot beverages as well as boiled water throughout the trek. It is easy to ensure trekkers’ hydration, which is crucial for the high-altitude environment. Boiling water kills parasites and keeps trekkers safe. Of the beverages, tea may be offered in black, milk, or herbal varieties. Instant coffee will also be offered in the morning and evening.

Along with the trek, hot water is offered for the washing of hands as well as before every meal. The weather and the area will influence the amount of hot water offered. The trekking crew wants to supply the trekkers with sufficient warm beverages throughout the trek. The Upper Dolpo Trek lets you spend less time worrying about the logistics and more time immersing yourself in the untouched beauty of the Himalayas.

Basics Training

Training is the key to success on the long, remote, high-altitude Upper Dolpo Trek in the Upper Dolpo region of Nepal. Trekking in high-altitude environments understandably requires a high degree of mental endurance, a high degree of physical endurance, and the ability to walk, albeit quite greatly, over difficult/rugged mountainous terrain for many hours each day over many consecutive days.

Physical Preparation

Prior to embarking on a trek, one should follow a physical training program for a period of no less than 6 – 8 weeks. This should include activities for physical conditioning, such as running. light jogging, swimming, stair climbing/stair mastering and cycling, and some / moderate resistance training (using weights or not) for the shoulders, legs, and the core to strengthen the cross-muscular pathway complex in the saggital and frontal planes as one plods on the steep strenuous ascents of the trek with a pack on and plods on the steep strenuous decents, and long-distance walking with an uneven gait while engaged in plodding/trekking long distances and distance walking practice on uneven terrain to simulate the conditions best one is likely to encounter while on the trek.

Physical Preparation

Previous trekking/plodding experience in the Upper Dolpo is of paramount importance. It is assumed that one has trekked/plodded in the upper environments of the Everest and the Annapurna regions of Nepal, and has no less than 3,000 – 4,000 meters of vertical ascents gained in that experience, and certainly quite possibly higher in that experience.

Mental Preparation

When trekking in the Upper Dolpo region of Nepal, one must train the mind to endure much of the same for many days of a trek, whereby many comforts of home are not only remote, but in practice and in Theory bordering on the nonexistent in a realm and region where the extreme and the remote and the unexpected are (limited to) Nature’s elements.
